It's possible that your character is already registered in another crew and since you left, you're now bugged. What you need to do is send in a /ccr in game explaining your problem, and check for a response. The wait time should be an hour...

I'm pretty sure that anyone who is left in MxO wouldn't mind shelling out another $40 for some new content. Worst case scenario: They don't pay and they still have content that comes from the normal patches.
