If it is /afk then I could not care less about it to be frank. I know thats a little sharp, but at the end of the day its a novelty feature that has no real function, aside from whacking a large bullseye on you if you are a Vector player.

So, reading this today I've come across 2 points which are now puzzling me.

Firstly, the IP information about US players has been released to Massive, obviously to get the ad's served to players in the US going from what was put in the article. To get adverts displayed in other countries their IP information needs to be released but, and to quote which we won't do. So why's that?

Secondly, other games seem to have a system where if no ad is available, nothing is displayed to even indicate that and advert should have been present in it's place. Now I'm quite happy to admit being wrong about that since I don't know all the details and this is just done through observation, but why can't such a system be implemented into MxO. I think I might have asked this before but the search system being awfull still I haven't been able to find it.

Just so i can crush peoples hopes... i mean, stop people from being disapointed later...

Luggables are definately not gonna be in 48. Walrus and Rare have already stated several times they're still in early design/testing phases. 49/50 maybe.

#36300093705 11/11/2006 15:37:30 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, November 10, 2006
I hate when they announce they're doing something without release dates. Kinda like Org specific abilities.

What would /afk do, then, if just flagging you as AFK would be pretty useless when you can easily say "I'm goin' afk okay laterz ps [faction here] suxorz lol"?

Dude... New cinematic, crits, and luggables?

Cinematic... yeah, don't need the patch for that. Just wait for someone to post the out of game URL. It'll play better too without any crashes.

Crits... they trickle out so slooooooowly these days that they really aren't worth looking forward to.

...and luggables? For all we know, they'll turn into another /afk =D (either way, they aren't in this patch).

Ya know, I get tired of reading all this whinin', crybaby crap.

They just finished up a major holiday event that, for all intents and purposes, went off fairly smoothly and to the satisfaction of most.

Aren't they entitled to a couple weeks of lightwork? I am happy to get anything at all; they could have skipped it for another couple weeks.

#36300093842 11/11/2006 20:40:31 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, November 10, 2006
Aren't they entitled to a couple weeks of lightwork?

No. That's what vaction time is for. This is their job. They should be putting their all into it 100% of the time. But you are missing the point, the "cry baby whining" you speak of is not about any lack of content going in to a patch. It's about the apparent hyping of a feature that does not warrant any hyping whatsoever; it's about promises that were made that should never have been made; it's a about a long line of disappointments without any concrete proof that steps have/are/will be taken to rectify the situation.

You can sit there with the rest of the "yes men" crowd if you wish, but they are the crowd that do not help the betterment of the game. It is the vocal people who express their concerns that are far more helpful - as long as it's done in a constructive manner (for the most part)...

Just saying, "oh g8 patch W mah m8!!!!1!" every time you hear of a new patch, is not going to help a bit. In fact, it's most likely to have a detrimental affect as the devs will assum they can get away with putting in smaller and smaller changes that don't really improve in the game. They will feel like this because no one is actually voicing their concerns, they are just trying to be all buddy-buddy with devs because they think it'll win them some favor. Pffft. Is all I'll say to that.

Jeez Chuui, switch to decaf.

regarding /afk: will the auto-jackout timer stay the same? I mean, if we have the ability to signify that we are indeed away from keyboard (thereby insinuating that we have to go do something that will keep us from the computer long enough that we need to be able to 'tell' others we are away), should the timeout timer be extended, or turned off completely?

Also, is anyone else having problems getting the page to load (OSOTLG, not forums)? That and DN1 has timed out on me a dozen times, but everything else loads fine.

Yeah, I get the same thing too. Only the Forums and the intro flash movie don't slow down and take 10 minutes to load.
#36300093910 11/12/2006 01:24:20 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, November 10, 2006

Well i might as well try and be opmistic about such a crap situation, usually when we do guess right a dev usually says Yes thats the one e.g. i think someone guessed the TM for a mask and they said yep yep.  So either we havent guessed the right thing or there just too afraid to say yes its /afk.

Also I think finally my rant in the last other side of the looking glass is coming back about crits and cinematic are just not enough for 6 weeks work.  Remember the reduced amount of crits idea is still there, this gives them time to work on things that are fun.  Unless this month they want us to be really bored so we can use the afk command lol.

#36300093934 11/12/2006 03:16:48 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, November 10, 2006

Aye, patch is a wee bit dissapointing as far as content goes. And i can understand how /afk being presented as a main hypeable feature would annoy people. And presenting criticals and cinematics as a defence doesn't really stand all that much since, well, they're always there, its just expected, the minimum.

Patches need things like Rare's Quests, those collector changes etc etc.

That said i do understand how the halloween event must have hit the schedule pretty hard, and for the most part, it payed off with a sweet event. Only downside now is the patch period afterwards where static content has had to fall to the wayside.

Solution? More devs. SMILEY

#36300094264 11/12/2006 15:40:46 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, November 10, 2006
more devs = more $$$ needed meaning the cost will go up.... not a good idea
#36300094311 11/12/2006 17:25:14 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, November 10, 2006
Actually, more devs = less profit, and the phrase "less profit" makes the big wigs' ulcers cry out.

Thank you.

I agree; a /rp flag is a great idea. Just as a /helper flag could be beneficial. /afk was actually in some patch notes long ago, I remember that, though the feature never worked. /mimeelbow certainly worked, however.

Anyways... /afk may be useful. Could be deeper than we think--Maybe automatically answering people who PM you with "[This player is currently marked AFK]," ignore trade requests, ignore invites... All of that stuff. Would be nice if it prevented you from automatically logging out after only 5 minutes of idling. My trick to getting around that has always been to que up the chat box like I'm inputting a message and just leave some heavy object lying on the space bar...

That's right.

The Effecutator.

Man...I can see it now...

E3: Hey tardo, can't you see he's AFK flagged?
E2: Oh, lawl, my bad.
E1: Oh, sorry, I was totally away from myself.
E2: Wait, wouldn't that be AFM?

Team duels would be sweeeeeeet but i aint getting me hopes up.

And as for afk being a gank flag, remember it should be completely optional. Thus you dont have to use it.

Oh and a 'build up' to afk? Let us not forget the other coolio stuff in el update, continuing (and ever improving) story missions, editable descriptions, /frags etc etc. SMILEY

Edit: And aye to Aqua, can the billboards not simply use replacement textures like teh olden days?

The way I understand things is; I remember the old billboards with ads for movies and lipstick and such. The new dynamic ads are textures that have been placed in front of the old ads. It seems the trouble was that for the ads to be dynamic, without having to rebuild the world and have a huge patch was to have them as items. The side-effect of this, is that they only appear in-game when they are in your world detail radius (the distance from your character that junk, and grass and trees and such appear). The billboards on the other hand are part of the world because they are large structures. So you would see the billboard and as you approached, all of a sudden the sign would change.

So to fix this it looks like the "Ad space for rent" sign was made as the texture for all these billboards so that at least for everybody that is outside the US the billboards don't look stupid.

Possibly what could be done is to change the billboard dynamic ad object so that depending on whether the player's IP is American or not it draws either from the local list of ads or from the served list (the MxO servers could then possibly send on the info for those viewing ads, or tell the client to do so... however it currently works).

Of course I'm obviously not privvy to the game's code so I could be waaay off the mark as to why the billboards work the way they do.

P.S. I came the conclusions above because there are two billboards on the freeway near the MultiMedia Monument in Downtown that behave this way, and if you view them from about a 60 degree angle to the side from the right distance (just across the road is about right) you can see the old ads underneath. One is for a carwash service I think.

Silly Nublets... Walrus is doing some smoke and mirrors here... tells you all about this "Awesome" new feature... and drops a hint... of a not so awesome feature...

He distracts you from thinking of awesome things... he is ninja... hell he sends in ninja strike teams to take care of problems.

Luggables... maybe... many / commands... most likely... Ninja tactics... Priceless.

I had a dream last night about this. And the dream basically foretold that Walrus really meant that we would be able to control our character's movements without a keyboard. Like the Matrix Online would be used as the forerunning game for Sony's patented neural brainwave transmitting technology or whatever. Thus why he said he was going to step away from the keyboard... Yeah. It made perfect sense in the dream, though. ;d

What's sad is that mentioning that it was in the update notes twice and never implemented doesn't narrow it down much. Hehe!

I hear that "/afk" is going to be "/gankme" on Vector. /afk was definitely not Beta, and Walrus did mention how someone was posting old Beta notes. On the other had, "away from the keyboard" is a pretty deliberate statement. Either way, Walrus is getting sloppy with his hints!

#36300095869 11/14/2006 23:16:36 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, November 10, 2006
Or perhaps Walrus still considers the game to be in Beta. Most of the players do =D
#36300096179 11/15/2006 10:08:45 The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, November 10, 2006
Again, the /gankme thing doesnt really stand since it should be entirely optional. I mean, you dont have to use it =P

The only problem would be if theres a auto afk after set period system, and even if there was just disable that part for vector.

S'all good.
