Things don't always go according to plan. This new year brought me a series of surprises--surprises that have led me to conclude that after ten years in the game industry--seven of those on The Matrix Online--it is time for me to go.

Whatever reason it is for you wishing to leave the game industry, I am sure it is for the right reasons, and because YOU felt like you had to leave it behind and not because it seemed like the only viable option to whatever reasoning was behind it.  It is a shame really, because unlike the music and movie industry the game industry is still growing extreamly fast, with more and more opportunities opening up all the time to make some big bucks (Look at the demand in Smartphone game market in the recent months), seems to be one of the safest industries to be in at the moment.

I am a tad reluctant to start brown-nosing like a few others, but I will just say that (even though I personally havn't jacked in to the matrix for quite a few seasons, I have watched from the sidelines as to speak) you helped delay this scenario for a good 18-24months, you gave many people the thrill of logging on and pertaking in the ongoing story of The Matrix, competiting for prizes and recognition from yourself and the community. Yes there hasn't always been happiness, there has been conflict over the identities over those that have been in LESIG, leaks of event plans and details and various of other mishaps. But overall, it hasn't been a bad experiance, we all wish there was more, but isn't the grass always greener on the other side?

Guess a thank you to you is in order also.

Rare,

Wow!  I knew something was up when you announced about the cutting back on live events....

Thank you for all the time and work that you put on The Matrix Online.   MxO would not be what it is without you behind it.  Thank you for EVERYTHING!

I hope you dont quit the gaming industry at all.  There are several reports that gaming had more sales than DVDs last year.  Like Unitoxic said, the gaming industry is booming right now... i hope you take advantage of those 10 years of experience.  Do not give up cause of this prio

See you out there!

I thought it was just a cruel joke....had to see for myself.  Never thought this day would ever come.  I thought the game would die, be cremated, die again, then dumped in the bowels of hell before you would ever quit.  I wish you the best.  We will never forget you or everything you have done for this game.

Rarebit,

Thanks for all the good times you created for me and mine in MxO.  This game could have been really amazing but I understand the hurdles.  I have had a blast and met some really amazing people.  You did a great job keeping it afloat.  I wish you all the best in whatever you do personally and professionally.  It obviously won't be the same without you but if it's alive, I may stop in every now and then to see what's the haps.  Anyway, take care and thanks for the memories.

I hope you'll understand that words cannot express my deepest regret that you are leaving MxO and the game industry, Rarebit.  You were an OUTSTANDING asset to this game and I know it wouldn't have been the same without you.

Would it be too much to tell you I love you?  Yes, no?  Well, take that how you wish, I guess.

Sad news indeed, despite my personal misgivings about the way the story was developing (apologies if I was overly vocal) I never ceased to admire the dedication, ingeniuity and skill you always showed this game and moreover the classy way you handled its diverse community. You have a rare gift in juggling many diifering issues and personalities and I hope it will resurface somewhere else before long, from your announcement it seems the loss isn't just MxO but the gaming world in geneneral.

I had many, many happy experiences here and like many others, some still present and some who have moved on, you are owed a tremendous debt of gratitude for what you did and how you kept it going.

All the very best in whatever you turn your hand to next.

Most expensive thread in MxO history indeed. . . you owe me 15 bucks, Chamberlain. Just kidding, man. You know me: forum drama whore.

I can't say I am surprised by this news; I've been predicting this since June. Not surprised. . . but like all the others, greatly saddened all the same.

You see, it hasn't been the game that kept us here, or even the story so much. It's been the incredible level of devotion that you showed. To us. Not to the story. Or MxO the property. Or SOE the company. Your devotion to the fans is what kept us here. As long as you were willing to dish it out, we were willing to lap it up (even if it tasted funny at times).

I guess many of us sensed this was coming after the announcement of the New Approach. That's when the mass exodus began a second time, I believe. Wow. Who else can say that their level of activity in this game has meant so much to so many? Hell, not just for MxO, but any game, for that matter?

For 3 years, you have been serving us selflessly, staying late for an LE more times than . . . well, more times than you went home on time, working ridiculously hard to get out a hotfix for some stupid hard-coded bug in the latest update. You snuck in on weekends. You wrote story on holidays. Even when you were sick, you worked.

For us.

I just wish there was something we could do for you, my friend. I could pledge to play every game that you ever have a hand in, but from the tone of your message, it doesn't sound as though you plan on continuing that career. So, I guess, if you ever find yourself headed to Nashville, shoot me an email. The least I could do is buy you a beer or three and reminisce about the good times.

Take care of you, Master Chamberlain. Temet Nosce.

It's been a pleasure to work with you Rarebit. Your dedication and your work on the project here has been memorable beyond belief and I believe I've not seen you forfeit a scheduled operation in the one year and a half I served with you, best of luck to all your endeavors whereever you plan to venture. I'll be watching for a book written by that bluepill Mr. Chamberlain in the Simulation at one point. And I do like the fact that you made the 66th update and the 13th as well... you know me, numbers and all. Heh-heh.

"My Two Cents"

This, I'm sorry to say, could possibly help mxo. You seen what he wrote about the story being in our hands, well people, are those of you that have been around as long as I just going to let the overall story die? We are the Red Pills of a community where nothing was ever givin to us without us having to bish about it.  Perhaps now, it's finally time, to do what I've been saying this whole time, Give us some dev abilities so we can create our own events, I say give us the ability, through a pill to make hostiles appear outa no where and attack anyone.

Rare, you did try, you weren't given enough stuff to go with, however, the 1 really big mistake that you all made was never giving the players total control of this game. In my opinion this is the main reason MxO is going to die. You think that a small group of devs can continue a story as complex as The Matrix??????? Hell no! It's up to the creative minds of the people that loved it so much, why in the world did you ever give into us players by not focusing on the story and focusing more on bs content that only managed to drop people's intrest in the game even further.

TBH I never gave a **** about the content, I cared more about intresting new events that would happen from time to time, intresting new things that could happen, I for one know my charactor was a big! part of the matrix story, I for one know that most of the story that I attempted to go with was only to help this game. But this thread isn't about me, it's about This so called nail in the coffin I keep hearing about. Bish please. SOE ruined this game, the players kept it from dying for this long, we can revive it completely, content, story, it's all pointless without people here to witness and use it, we as the people should keep the story alive, we should be givin the tools by soe to do so, and if we succeed, we will be giving new content, new Devs and possibly even a new story that we, the mofos that have really been keeping this game alive, have made, there never really was a story, it was all bs stuff rare was just making up off the top of his head, the story should have went towards the war, and towards awsome fights and a winner in the battle. Not towards some wireframe bs that made NO SENSE AT ALL!!!!!! And not towards some bs content that really, anyone? Someone tell me how that is story based content? PLS?! I thought so, this game was never, and I mean NEVER about the content, it was about the story!!!!!!! Stop and think about that before you click the unsubbscribe button, think about it, just because we don't have live events, just because there is no dev to run the show, just because the content is no longer reuseable, doesn't mean the story has to end, this just means that SOE will no longer be writing the story, and we should.

I for one know, alot of you out there are good story tellers, you are good rpers, I when I put my mind to it could even come up with logical story, but one man, as you can see finally became overwelmed because everything was placed on his shoulders. The story should have always been writen by us, not by SOE, the game should be run by those truely dedicated to it and it's continuation, not by those just trying to make a quick buck. So I challenge you all, each and everyone that reads this post, those of you that don't want to see this story go down the crapper, those of you that think they can do better, write my friends, write the story and then, if you can, attempt to act it out, attempt to do what even the devs could not, Continue the story, the way it was ment to be done. By us!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK I've had time to digest this a bit, as much as I can anyways, so here's my final farewell.

Rare,

I want to thank you for all you've given to this game.  You really are appreciated for what you've done.  I hope you weren't resentful towards me for sharply criticizing the new approach and the dramatic downturn of dynamic interactive storytelling.  I guess we all were extremely spoiled by your devotion to the game, and if I appeared alarmist I guess I was just projecting my own fears which have sadly come to pass or so it seems.

This past year you really did the work of ten people....crits every six weeks, daily live events, new clothing, new items, new moods, new emotes, two whole new constructs (!!!), Datamine quests, New One Zero quest, Sati's Playground with two quests, the Valkyrie quest, etc. etc....I mean that was insanely awesome...but when someone is always putting in 1,000% and spending 100+ hours a weeks doing what you did, including constantly interacting with us on DN1; well we all know that's unsustainable.  We are only....human.  I'm only sorry you didn't have the tools, support, staff, etc. at your disposal to make your vision for MxO come to fruition.

Thank you for some phenominal Live Event experiences.

Thank you for answering my Communique to the Merovingian waaay back in 2006...That was truly enlightening and showed me that you really understood the nuance of that character, amongst others!

Thank you for really listening to us on DN1...through high times and low.

Most especially, thank you for attending every single annual Les Enfants Terribles Club Hel Party post-Lith!  I had hoped you could join us at least one more time for our 5th go round.  Alas, it is not to be.  There is a reason I've kept my same sig, even though its about 10 months out of date.  I would have changed it long ago were it not for the good memories that you made happen.

Thank you for providing us with a wonderful world to escape to, and keeping the Matrix franchise alive and thriving ten years after its original inception.

The game will never be the same.  It was a particular moment in time and (cyber)space that can never be replicated.  Thank you for the comeradship, lightheartedness, and freedom you've provided to us in this digital playground of ours.

Bonsoir, Mon Ami!

This.

Give Dev tools to everyone and the game would be ruined by those abusing the tools. Give them to a select few.. I wouldn't expect the rest to stick around. No, Lesig style spawns in certain areas (mission areas?) fair enough, main character masks (although this presents further problems) ok. Dev tools to players.. hell no.

I am sorry to see you go after everything you've done for the playerbase. It was fun fighting alongside you with various EPN events despite whatever disagreements we had regarding how LESIG was run. Coming from someone that did not have the time commitment to play this game as much as I used to compared to 2005, it took me a very long time to understand what lengths and painful measures you went through to run these events despite the miniscule amount of resources you had. I hope things go well in your life and wish for the best.  Semper Fi.

#36300541057 02/04/2009 10:28:13 Re:Thank you

My heart is broken too. This game has been such a huge part of my life for nearly three years now, and I can't help but feel it is losing its soul. What is the line from M1? "The body cannot live without the mind." Rarebit has been MxO's mind & soul through some very difficult times, and it's very difficult to imagine MxO without Rarebit's hand on the wheel.

With Ben's departure, we are seeing the end of the Matrix story. The story that hundreds upon hundreds of people helped to realize on film, in three video games, in comics and in the printed word. The Wachowski Brothers handed stewardship of their universe over to Chadwick, who then passed the torch to Ben, and now Ben is putting it down, its flame exhausted. Perhaps it's worth reflecting on the fact that many incredibly popular and significant stories were born and then died on film, or in novels, or perhaps successfully transitioned from one media to another .. but very few have had the lifespan and the active following that the Wachowskis' vision has had, going back over ten years now. The story of the Matrix has shown amazing depth and breadth, and I'm sure will continue to be written about, talked about and loved for many years to come.

For Ben Chamberlain's hand in that storytelling, I am glad.

For his leadership of our game, which many of us consider a second home .. I am deeply and ever grateful.

For his boundless imagination, I am in awe.

And for his having to constantly deal with unhappy players, unappreciative critics and ever-shrinking resources, I am sick at heart. I can't help but feel like we, the players, have a hand in this. I wish we could have been more supportive, instead of constantly niggling at him for gimmethis gimmethat. I myself am guilty of this as well.

But I hope in spite of (I'm sure) many, many disappointments, hardships, sleepless nights, angry words with thankless players .. I hope he remembers his time with MxO fondly.

As for myself, I'm with ArchDuke and the other diehard MxO fans .. we ain't goin nowhere.

Come back and see us, Rarebit. You've always got friends here, for as long as the lights are on.

/as

Had to re-up my sub for this one, if only to post on this thread.

Just want to really say thank you Rarebit for the effort you put forth for this game.  Whether you were liked or not by whomever, you truthfully were one of the best things to happen to the game when you came in and began taking on a much larger role.  For better or worse, you simply gave a tremendous effort to do something for this game, and that something did matter.  It created possibility, inspired changes, and created some new challenges.  In the end, you time here was, in this player's mind, a positive one and I for one thank you for putting up with us as long as you did and for putting forth the effort that you did.

I honestly wish you the best in your future endeavors.  I see you as a talented individual and I hope that life takes you places you want to go.  Thanks for the memories.

Thanks for all your efforts, Rare.

May your path be enlightening.

Overreacting, much? I'm sure that the bigwigs are aware of MxO's main goal in its existance. There will be a replacement.

If you're so sure of this, how do you explain the complete disclosure of Rare's year-long story plans? Why wouldn't he keep them to pass on to his successor to build from?

It's a really good question, Asna, and one I have been asking myself.  I'm assuming for the time being that the story was perhaps not as secret as most of us thought.  Or maybe the Wachowskis want to use it to build an MMO based on Speed Racer.

You mean an MMO dead before birth.

As for Rare's storyline, IF there'll be a replacement, they'll be making their own plot, whether or not a better one. Way I see it, MxO's come to that point we've all foreseen but struggled to keep at bay for as long as possible. Then again, that's just my point of view.

Thats putting it mildly.  About as likely to get greenlighted as a Gigli or a Battlefield Earth MMO  SMILEY

I don't think it's too complicated. It would restrict his replacement, if he does indeed get one, to having to follow Rares plans through for nearly a full year before he would get full creative liscence on the story. I don't think thats a good thing for someone coming in with fresh ideas to be burdend with as naturally, they would look to do things differently.

Didn't Rare himself have to follow some of Chadwicks plans? I suspect, if there is to be a successor (Personally I find it unlikely, but I'll run with the idea that there is for this posts sake), then he perhaps knew what it was like to either be stifled or restricted by a pre-written story that he had to carry out.
