I didn't want to believe it, maybe I was in denial.  I knew this day was coming but didnt really try to think too much about it.  I held on the naive hope that maybe you would be here till the servers got shut down, but I knew you wouldnt stay that long.  You've made this place an amazing thing to be a part of Rarebit, and for that I give you my sincerest thanks for what you've done for us.  No one will truely know the blood, sweat, and tears you poured out from within to create the little things that make The Matrix Online the experience that it is.  I truely wish you all the best in the future and hope that whatever it is you plan for the future, please remember us in some way shape or form.  I myself will be here like I have always said till the servers get shut down.  If we do make it to the end of the year, try to stop by and say hello every once and while.  Thank you for EVERYTHING you've done!

I want to end this with one of my fondest memories of The Matrix Online.  Goodbye Rarebit.  You will be missed... SMILEY

Update 66... Friday 13th...

Both eerie and awesome.

On a serious note, when is Rare's leaving bash? You KNOW we have to throw him a party right? If anyone deserves it, it's him. Party organizers, DJs; lets pull this one together.

SMILEY

Good-bye, Rarebit.

"First off, man, i'm really really sorry for the massive ammounts of flame and bullsh*t you had to read through as you began phasing yourself out without letting the community know the reason.

I know it was necessary, and i know that you couldn't just have dropped the hammer, but i really think that it was unnecessary for you to hear all the negativity in your departure. You did not deserve it, and neither did this masterpiece of an universe, no, not just a game, a whole universe you've been trying so hard to keep alive. And now that you're going, we can't do much else than make insignificant attempts to express our love for all the hard work you've done.

Friend, you perfectly know that our thankfulness can't be expressed in a single post, thread, letter or any ammount of text, so we may as well just keep this short.

Thank you, for all you've done.
Best luck, wherever you go, whatever you do. As i understood from your post, you are unsure if you want to continue in the online gaming branch, but i, as many other MxO players, will continue to look out for another project wich has you involved."

Rarebit,

We've had disagreements. We've had good times. We've had good discussions. We've had debates about the game.

I respect you and what you tried to do for the game, and only regret that the big guys in charge couldn't allow you, or the game, to completely live up to potential. My time helping you in LESIG from the very beginning until I resigned in late 2007 was frustrating at times, though still fun. I only wish we could all have had the game we truly wanted.

PM me with contact information if you'd like a job reference or to keep in touch. SMILEY

Best of luck,

Michael "Foxxdie" N.

#36300540413 02/03/2009 03:20:13 Re:Thank you

First of all - thank you!

I'm not really a veteran for this game since I'm playing only about one year, but I already had so much great moments in this game it's hard to even count. The story you were telling kept me interested more than I ever was in any video game, and I was eagerly looking forward to every big update to know where you'll take us next.

The more I learned though this one year about what you do for the game, the more I was astonished by your devotion and the amount of things you do for us, players. Honestly, even though I have not seen the "gold times"of the MxO, I still think you did an awesome job. And I am very much grateful to you for giving me personnally one full year of excitement. I needed this at the time I first tried this game man, and I'll never find the words to tell you how much you will be missed.

I don't know if anyone (if we really have someone) could take your place to keep the things you worked on alive. I guess we'll need that, too. To you, I wish plenty of good luck in whatever you're going to do next in your life. A childish part of me is so tempted just to say "please don't go!', even though I realise it would be a very selfish thing to say...

I will miss you.

#36300540415 02/03/2009 03:28:38 Re:Thank you

Rare,

You were the number one reason this game remained interesting and exciting for so many subscribers after the shift to SOE. Your dedication to the game, the franchise, LESIG, and all subscribers is something I wish all developers had for their fans. I know I've had some of my most memorable gaming experiences in part to you. Despite any hardships you've had to see through with the community, all of your time and effort was and will remain to be appreciated in the eyes of MxO's community.

While it's unlikely, it would be great if you could keep in contact with the MxO community, whether it be through these forums or a blog somewhere far off.

Good luck, and keep on doing what you do, wherever you're doing it.

They're starting to open up the sky
They're starting to reach down through
And it feels like we're living in that split-second
Of a car crash
And time is slowing down
And if we only had a little more time
Then this time
Is all we have
Do you remember the time we
And all the times we
And should have
And were going to
I know
And I know you remember
How we could justify it all
And we knew better
In our hearts we knew better
And we told ourselves it didn't matter
And we chose to continue
And none of that matters anymore
In the hour of our twilight
And soon it will be all said and done
And we will all be back together as one
If we will continue at all

Shame on us
Doomed from the start
May God have mercy
On our dirty little hearts
Shame on us
For all we have done
And all we ever were
Just zeroes and ones

Crikey. What can I say? This came as a complete shock. I knew there were doubts in the community - the state of MxO is always in question after all - but this still seems pretty sudden. I just hope your reasons for leaving (leaving the industry entirely in fact, if I follow you correctly) aren't too serious and everything's okay.

You've done so many things for MxO and the community. You've taken over practically sole development of the game and reined in the story after Chadwick's departure. You've weaved an interesting, compelling tale that I would very much like to follow to its conclusion. You've done amazing, creative things with the few tools and resources that were left for you, and the seemingly pathetic support you've received from the powers that be. You've had the vision and guts to see through a major and controversial change in the game. You've done more than any developer I can think of to keep the community up-to-date regarding developments and future releases, and have done much to help and support the community in general, be it as simple as answering questions or as daunting as doing interviews and hosting parties. You've been as fair and inclusive as it's possible for one man to be when assuming the role of the franchise's many characters. And all this whilst putting up with an enormous amount of flak and abuse (even from me on occasion).

Without meaning to dismiss the efforts of the rest of the MxO team and the players, it must be said that The Matrix Online exists because of you.

Thank you.

#36300540464 02/03/2009 05:09:46 Re:Thank you

I saw this coming since I heard you had cut the live events out being the life blood of the game. Although I wasnt happy like many people I knew there had be a reason like this for it happening. I know I for one have been critical of your work from time to time. I have also expressed such things openly on the forum and in game. For this I apologise, I understand that you are doing the best job you can with the budget and resources available to you. The real problem is with the SOE purse holders who have been reducing the mxo budget since day 1.  You have poured your heart and soul into this game and it shows, with the limited resources you have managed to keep a dying game (of no fault of your own) alive. This has been by far the best mmo I have played, and I have played a few. Despite its low numbers and sometimes lack of content I always find myself coming back and I thank you for this Rarebit. What happens now I dont know, I hope Walrus can organise a suitable replacement and allow the game to continue as planned. However your shoes will be big ones to fill and I hope the new person is up to it.

All the best in the future, I hope your path leads to larger and greater things. You should create a normal forum account and come back to talk to us from time to time.

Cheers

#36300540509 02/03/2009 06:32:01 Re:Thank you

CCP should take ownership of this game rather than SOE, they could have a huge fanbase from eve come over, add another 15,000 regular subscribers at any one time, monthly updates would be brought in, plus fixes applied daily, and a complete graphics overhaul wouldnt be far off, thats what you should pay a sub for, which you get with them, if not CCP then whoever takes over next needs to justify our sub, because what im paying £10 a month for now i can do on grand theft auto 4 without the multiplayer aspect, we need new new new

I still find it strange that there has been more activity within the last week or so than there's has been in quite a while and Rarebit actually leaves.

What's the point of an update and a EPN Live Event if everything's going to hell? The counter logic to that is maybe someone or maybe a group of people may be taking over.

For example, the recent appearance of old Liaisons may indicate something. As well as the end of the EPN event, which clearly hints there's way more to be done.

I dunno if I'm right about it, but it seems to me like Rarebit himself didn't expect to leave just now. It looks like a really fresh decision. But that's just my impression.

Things don't always go according to plan...too true.  Without Rarebit or myself going into detail I think I have a pretty good idea what has led Rarebit to his decision.  I respect his decision and understand it.  It should be noted that Rarebit is no "small game designer" as he refers to himself.  Never shortchange yourself Rarebit, ever, not after everything you've thrown at us, whether we liked it or not, with such limited resources.  I only hope and pray your future path is not riddled with the hurdles mine has been.  Thank you, good luck and Godspeed!

Throughout all the transitions the Matrix has endured, I always knew what I needed to do.  I always knew what my path was.  Now, I do not know what to do.  Will I realize my goals?  Will I make it to the end of the path before me?  Or will it just be a memory of what I intended?  I don't know...

I see it this way:

As long as enough people are subbed to keep this game afloat, it's not going anywhere.

So it really will come down to us.  While the lack of an updated story, the absolute death of LE's, and lack of additional content will be rough, there will be many who have no intent to leave until the servers are shut down.

#36300540677 02/03/2009 11:38:14 Re:Thank you

Everyonce in awhile someone comes along who changes everything. and i think its safe to say you can probly be lumped into that statement.

over the years youve been that thorn that pushes us all on to try harder, constantly moving the goal posts and providing a unique challange you just dont get in most games. cause were not just trying to beat a game with set rules and a definative end , were trying to get inside your mind , to figure out what move your gonna make next and what we can do to affect that.

thats how ive come to see the game, its like this big chess board, all about having the right peices in the right places at the right time, and i dont think we could of asked for a more worthy opponent. when alls said and done i think its fair to say that youve served your time and no one can denie youve done more than your fair share. i think thats about all there is to say so ill just say, so long and thanks for all the fish.
