Hello there, Rarebit. I suppose you feel a bit like Alice...

Just decided to make a welcoming post like the one HCFrog got.
Rarebit's the second person with 'Dev' under their name that I've seen.

In the spirit of giving and crummy Photoshop painting, here's a (poor) attempt at a sig:

(Yes, I know that's a rabbit and not a rarebit, but if you've ever seen what rarebit looks like, you wouldn't want to see it in a sig.)

Heehee... nothing's cuter than a bunny with a pancake on its head.

... Cept maybe a hamster with a knife strapped to it. SMILEY

EDIT: Aw... You changed it. I liked the pancake bunny...

Welcome to the light.
#10400053638 12/14/2005 00:07:24 Re: All welcome: RAREBIT.
Criminey! Here I was, idly wondering whether anyone would have seen me, thinking "no, no way, I was careful"...and here we are. Should have known better, I suppose.

Thanks for the welcome! I'm not sure what or when I'll be posting, as I've been too busy working on stuff I can't talk about yet (but take it from me, you do not want to end up hand-editing quaternions...) to ask Walrus what I'm allowed/supposed to be doing here SMILEY. I figure in any case I'll probably just end up getting baited into saying something I shouldn't, but what can you do.

Thanks for the sig, Symmetric! It's better than anything I could whip up--though I warn you folks that I may inflict a hand-drawn one on you after the holidays.

Awesome to have devs coming to see us! Welcome and we hope to hear a lot of things from you guys SMILEY

Welcome to the mad house SMILEY

Nice to see our dev team (slowly) getting involved more.

My Google-fu may have led me down the wrong path, but quaternions are to do with physics, right?

#10400053679 12/14/2005 04:45:13 Re: All welcome: RAREBIT.
physics now why would they want to be doing stuff like that hmmmm......

maybe the enemy death will be ragdoll deaths you might be able to move
stuff like a huge rock will be hard to move and if you can move it the
moving would be slow where as a trash can would be easy

I'm a second year physics graduate student, and I've never heard the term before in nuclear or quantum.  I did a google search, and it appears to me from wikipedia that it's a purely mathematical construct involving matrices and complex numbers.  So, in theory, it could be used in physics, though I've never had to use it.

hey!, oh it would be awesome to see more hand drawn work, im a fan myself of that SMILEY

look forward to any positive input you will provide to us SMILEY

Some people have asked about the origin of my handle.

1) "Welsh rarebit" is indeed a curious delicacy, and if you text/image Google for it, you will find out more than you ever wanted to know [SOE is not responsible for material you may find on Google! 8o]

I've never been to Wales (close, though!), but I am interested in it, and if I ever strike it rich somehow, I will retire there to a certain castle I've already picked out, and nurture plots to take over the world from my impregnable fortress.

2) I'm a big fan of Winsor McCay's work, much of which has echoes of the Matrix. Fer'instance:

The above is from his "Little NEmO in Slumberland" comic strip (the shifted case in "Nemo" is my own invention). He also did a strip called "Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend."

3) "Rare bit" has obvious implications in the digital world of the Matrix. SMILEY:)

EDIT: fixing missing image; free anonymous image hosts FTW

Because I am fascinated by Matrix inter-relations, I wanted to point out of few things that sprung into my head when I first saw this panel (where are my fellow Matrix conspiracy theorists? SMILEY:

Archived image unavailable: matrixland.jpg

1) Morpheus.

Well, I'm sure you saw his signature on the notice. In Little Nemo in Slumberland, Morpheus was the name of the king of Slumberland.

2) The choice.

Notice the two colored buttons: one red, and one sort of greenish...blue? Red, or blue. A choice. Hmm.

3) The chandelier looks like a Zion hovercraft!

Okay, maybe not.

4) The consequence.

Picking Green(-ish blue) gets you a banquet. Perhaps with...steak?

Picking Red gets you a dance. Action. A choreographed ballet of inter-locked movement, if you will.

5) The internet tells me that Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" comic was acknowledged as a big influence on the W brothers' vision of the Matrix.

The internet also told me, I think it was from an interview with the artist, that Neil Gaiman counted Little Nemo in Slumberland among the major influences on his work.

What fun! How deep does the Rarebit-hole go? (Hm...)

Keep in mind that this panel first appeared in print eighty years ago: December 6th, 1925.

AmbrielSyntax wrote:Obviously, the 2 monkeys appear to be looking at the buttons rather than the sign, symbolic of the primitive bluepills choice that they are confronted with when the blue/red pills are offered. The royal couple to the left are Trinity, with roses (love) on her dress, and Neo, who is wearing blue. (Blue symbolises trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven) They are looking at eachother while the guard in the back (machine reference) watches over them, and does his best to make sure everyone stays in line. The editor of the comic probably saw a "/" before the "dance" and removed it, thinking it was a typo.

OMG I thought that was Trinity, too! But I couldn't figure out why.

Three years later.

I got the message from El that Rarebit is leaving, then I sat and read every post in the other thread. Originally, I wanted to post this in there, but seeing as this will be the most expensive forum post I'll ever write, I decided to perform the greatest thread nerco ever, too (reason being that I can't post in any Broadcast Depth thread for some reason).

There's only a few minutes left until I must depart for my philosophy class (where I have a professor who obsesses over The Matrix, too, how fitting!), hardly enough time to display my gratitude. But I shall.

Rarebit! What more can we say? You inspired me. You inspired us all.

Go ahead and close this thread. It has served its purpose.
