Yeah, if this area is an open PvP area it really diminishes the interest to me as well.  While FFA PvP is better than the standard PvP arrangement, it's still not something I'll bother engaging in very often... and data mining is still just an extremely boring thing to do as far as I'm concerned, so yeah... *shrug*  In any case, I guess we'll just have to wait on more info.  The area itself looks beautiful, and I won't argue that some parts of it look like they will be very good for PvP, but I'm just not quite as interested now as I was before.

While FFA is fun, I rather see not see that, but that still could be interesting!

So a better place to datamine? I wish you add a bit more than just that, or hope you have.

#36300401649 02/07/2008 09:37:39 Re:Image Retrieval - February 07, 2008
Ok, here's my 2 cents:

- This area is a construct, thus auto-PvP is OFF (hopefully, otherwise it would just be a lowlvl gankage area). BUT ... if you flag, you are flagged to EVERYONE, which is imo awesomesouce! (Remember, Construct <> Archieve)
- 10* Mining Yield = Money Farm
- Interior Access denied -> Phase 2: Interior access, hopefully Sewer System! Like the one in ETM and PoN, after the Zion Meeting.
- 7 Proxies (around MegaCity) with random entry points (inside) = Yay
- New areas usually come with new opponents and items: Thus far, none known (population: 0; -> no Collectors either)

Exactly... an area as detailed and lush as this shouldn't be just an area for PvP... It'll turn out like the Archives with the only possible things drawing people in being the FFA and increased Datamining yield...
#36300401651 02/07/2008 09:41:22 Re:Image Retrieval - February 07, 2008

A lot of people are complaining about, "oh it's only for datamining and pvp?  lame."  But keep in mind that the image retrieval  says:

"Phase 1
 Population: 0
 Interior Access: Restricted
 Mining Yield: *10"

This leads me to believe that there will be future phases with more things to do in this area.  Rather than wait to add all sorts of things into it, he is probably letting us test the area with pvp and datamining, in case there are any bugs that he has missed.  I believe in a previous post he mentioned that there were bluepills inside the buildings and he would have to take them apart to remove the bluepills for the next patch (which is why interior access would currently be restricted).  Really, would he have made this large and detailed of an area just for datamining and pvp?  I think we can expect a lot more from this area (at least I hope so) in future updates.  Who makes a Phase 1 without a Phase 2?

When does this come out??
#36300401657 02/07/2008 09:47:07 Re:Image Retrieval - February 07, 2008

If you're saying that Friendly Protocols being Engaged indicates FFA being enabled, then Enemy Protocols being Engaged certainly means perma-PvP.

Just something to work with. It's still an awesome area.

#36300401660 02/07/2008 09:52:07 Re:Image Retrieval - February 07, 2008
There seems to be some confusion about the Proxies/Archivists. There aren't seven around the Mega City for us to find - that'd require a rebundling of the districts. There is an undefined means to access the construct, but seven Proxies to exit it.

We'll be placed in random places when we enter, but to leave we visit one of the seven Proxies. They're marked on the image.

Since these are from the Archivist Society, one could assume that Rarebit is just showing this as an excerpt from the development of the Datamine construct.  Having said that, maybe Phase 2 will show more features in the Datamine we'll see (which could be the result of Datamine: Phase x).  Sort of like a teaser, showing only a few features that will be available at a time through showing how (in the Matrix) Datamine was developed over the course of it's timeline (started with FFA pvp, restricted access to interiors in Phase 1, but x, y, and z features were later added in Phase 2, etc.) with the final retrieval showing it in the state we'll see it as.  Hope that big of mumbling made sense, couldn't think of how to say what I was trying to convey.  =P

Hmmm... Enemy protocols are engaged in Richland but in Syntax and Recursions case, to actually use them you have to flag. If it said enemy protocols disabled then when you flag you wouldn't be able to target enemy personnel.
Oh well maybe I'm wrong but I can still hope...

Also:

I think people need to get a bit of perspective. This area could very well be for 'just' PvP and data mining, as much as we'd prefer for it to be grander. Why?

Rarebit just made a brand new area! SMILEY That hasn't been done since the start of the game (barring the Commando white halls, but they were easy)! However little there is to do in there, we technically just got a huge boost of content. I think just having the place is all we can fairly expect for the time being.

I'm not saying it won't be changed later, that there won't be new things to do. I'm just saying that it's unfair to demand anything beyond just the bare construct at this stage.
#36300401678 02/07/2008 10:06:30 Re:Image Retrieval - February 07, 2008

I am lured into posting.

The fact that the data mining payout is increased in this area leads me to believe that there will be a tradeoff: namely that you are attackable by everyone in the construct. I would imagine it's a balancing measure to keep 50 people from sitting in there data mining together. You have to find a good hiding place if you want to camp and data mine (or a good team protecting you... a team you can trust SMILEY ) or else you'll have to fight to stay in there.

Plus... I remember making a post a long time ago where I prophesized that a new area open to all levels would suck everyone out of the city and then all our new players would really think MxO's a ghost town. The FFA construct area would prevent people from idling AFK in the new area just for fun.

Lastly, from my experience with the FFA areas during the Joker Finale, being flagged FFA makes you immediately attackable by everyone, regardless of your level. I imagine that's how this construct will be.

While this is in the phase of being completed, I think it's important people express concerns/wishes, so they can be addressed at this late development stage rather than after its actually been added.
#36300401683 02/07/2008 10:08:01 Re:Image Retrieval - February 07, 2008
Mentioning FFA all the time reminds of an idea I had when I first saw FFA: An expansion of the PvP command!
Normally /pvp flags you to players from other orgs, right? What about an extension by using an additional optional parameter?

e.g. /pvp [extent] where extent = {hostile, friendly, all} and {hostile} being default when extent is not specified

Of course that would need also restrictions, since one could jump between {hostile} and {friendly} to escape gankage. The restriction would be additive "extents", meaning e.g. if you'd /pvp hostile, then do a /pvp friendly you'd be in {all} mode, instead of {friendly}.

Then the next issue would be with people who are only "semi" flagged (or not flagged at all) and attack a another "semi-flag" or an "all-flag". Would an attack automatically trigger an additional flag for the attacked "extent"?

I hate to be the pessimist but I give it a week or two before people get bored of it and complain wanting new content.

"Why couldn't you have added this?"
"This would've made it Ub3r 1337 aw3s0m3"

In saying that however, this place looks fantastic and I'd love to see lots of people using it regularly? - New Mara Central? LOL I think not but we can all hope eh? SMILEY

Edit: Ja, I know what you mean Alt. But if this thing is enterable by all levels (1-50) setting standard /pvp all flag (<-- support the idea! see 6 posts upwards) is not a wise decision. Even on Vector, PvP only starts at lvl 16.

I understand what the difference is in the 'current' constructs and archives... BUT

And... I mentioned this before, but I don't think anybody saw it.  I know the image 'Says' Construct, BUT... one of the images he released yesterday showed an 'Archivist' being used to get into the area..... like the current Archives.......... so which is it really?

A Construct (like the others)    OR   An Archive (like the others)

OR

I think it could be something in between... not one or the other.  So we won't know exactly how the pvp/ffa/etc will really be, until more information is released.  I think this is a hybrid of what we are used to.  Something completely new.  Time will tell.

Main problem I see is that as of right now, ANYbody can enter that thing (lvl 1-50). Seeting a /pvp all flag as standard is not a wise decision if that is the case. The whole area would degrade into a lowbie seekNgank action.
