As a great man once said to me...
... Uh... I forget.
Anyhoo, the point is that when you have a party in a public space, you've got to follow certain basic procedures to make sure that it doesn't suck. A lot of careful planning and preparation go into these things, and it can be a lot of work to get past that and really get down to some meaningful person-to-person interaction.
And, you know, it's important to remember that people come in all colors and shapes and sizes, and that fortunately we're in a world where these things can be changed to spice them up a bit.
So love your neighbor, pass the cake, stay off really big pipes, and leave the rest to the experts.

Wooo! I've finally got my picture in a live event, that almost makes up for having to leave before Effy arrived, and by the looks of it he arrived just shortly after I left - grrr!!
But whatever, I'm there with my party afro on, and I got a shout out live on air - woooo! It was a fun event, even though I missed the best part.

I threatened the Effectuator with my RafterMonkeyDance to transform me into a helicopter. He just said that's soo old. So he tried making me into a crane!!! It didn't work, so he made me into a spotlight!!!!
We had more DJs than all clubs in MegaCity together!
The Effectuator knows how to make the best parties even better.

Grod was a Pandora's Box, I'll have you know! Pile of garbage indeed...
The Cryptos box was williz, and the subway car(s) was Harpalos. And don't forget ArchDuke as the concert lights seen jacking out in your first non-mocha screenshot.

As awesome as the party was we've already gone through this.
Non canon = No chapter tag.
Imagine a potential player coming into this board, he's a big Matrix fan and is excited about the idea this game continues the story and is officially recognised by the brothers.
Then they see this.
They label the game as one big p1ss take, turn around and never look back.
Heck, i'm still dissapointed the halloween ones havn't been removed. They're even up on www.mxostory.com as chapter relevant events. Hardly helpful to the integrity of the storyline.

i dunno man, if i was new to the game and saw a character effectively being used as a cypher for a powerful program able to "reshape" elements within the matrix - i'd think that was pretty awesome and entirely in line with the idea of "computer simulated world where stuff can be fiddled with".
after all, we have werewolves and those silly "nightmare" things in canon related missions - they seem like a much bigger stretch to me than a program that can fiddle with stuff, even accepting for the fact that ghosts and werewolves were mentioned in the films (and I have huge misgivings about how such a throwaway plot element in reloaded was turned into such a big aspect of the games in any case).

*nods* And today, I overheard a conversation between two new players. One was talking about how he enjoyed this event, and he was hoping that Effy would show up and do it again today. He mentioned that he wanted to be turned into a trash can so he could sneak up on people. ^^

I guess my concern was that you might have refused, and then turned into some kind of crazed griefer who would have insisted on coming back and spamming big area FX no matter how many times I booted you. Been known to happen... So it was a lot safer just to wait it out, especially since you happened to announce you were leaving in area chat just as I got in earshot.
What kind of surprised me was that nobody else was mentioning the FX you were spamming (that big yellow circle one). I wonder if that's just because they're used to people doing that at parties and not listening to requests to stop, or because they had CTRL+F toggled off already, or because they send such requests via tells so as not to spam area chat with spammy "stop spamming" messages, or because they liked the FX. I also noticed that you didn't get too many replies from your area chat messages, and I started to think it might have been because everyone had you on ignore--which I guess would have supported the "they're used to it" theory. But that was all just more or less idle speculation on my part at the time.

Always demanding that I supply the explanations for you, eh? :p
I didn't want to.
The Winter Holiday was mostly between chapters, if I recall, whereas right now we are in the middle of a chapter. The WH lasted far longer, whereas this was just one day. Generally I like to leave the tag on because it helps me when I'm looking back at chronology. Even if the main thrust of the event doesn't have to do directly with chapter 7.1, players present, and character attitudes, will tend to reflect the chapter indirectly.
And man, are we still hung up about "canon"? Stuff happens. Whether or not it's worth remembering is a matter of opinion.
EDIT: Apostrophes are serious business.

This line worries me, it really does.
I'm starting to gain more and more concern over just how seriously some people are taking the official continuation of the Matrix storyline.
You can't just go do crazy, albiet fun, *CENSORED* - label it as part of the storyline then say 'if ya don't like that bit ignore it'. No way.
This event, as the other crazy effy events, should be clearly labelled - or not labelled as the case may be - as non canonical. Simple as.
And to people saying "if i was looking in i'd say 'yeah thats cool'" Yes, yes it is cool and yes people will look in and think that. But those same people would think that even if it wasn't marked as story. Those same people would talk about it and be happy if it wasn't marked as story. But those who actually care about how the future of the matrix is being handled will look in and think differently.

why would a newcomer and / or outsider to the game be so bothered about what "is" and "isn't" classed as "canon" though? heck, i've been back for three months and only just realised that the story continues across the three servers, rather than being non-dependant on one another
to be honest, i think they'd have more to think about on first view of the the game than what bit of what event ties into what crazily numbered section of what particular chapter of the game in relation to the "proper" story.
#3630019540603/24/2007 04:41:42Re:[7.1.3] Okay, we're gonna make some DJs - Syntax - 3/22/07
And now a few pics from the terminals perspective
Rouge event harware has been seen entering the matrix through the uriah sw hardline.. approach with caution
This would later b e the site of Terminal v Spotlight and Terminal II : Rise of the subway cars
Some mara c schenanigins
ATM's comming to a hardline near you...
Night of the Terminal.....
And kids this is why you dont mess around with bottle rockets
Was a great event...even though my lack of legs ment i had to jump everwhere lol, and activating hyper speed was just...trippy.

I see your point and yeah, I guess you couldn't take the risk of me ruining the party for ya. I'm disapointed, but I can take it and I hope i've taken it well humouredly (?) enough for you to maybe know that i won't mess things up if there's a next time.
i put the effect on because in the PobS event I'd have it on from missions, stumble into a party in Tabor and people'd go "woah! hey this guy brings his own disco lights!" or words to that effect, so that's what I was going for, obviously it wasn't to everyone's taste. Maybe I did get some tells asking me to turn it off (it was Code Ahaper btw) but I don't remember seeing any, but there was a lot of text there and I was reading an encyclopedia at the same time to try and justify staying up late at my pc!!
As for no replies, I hope no one's got me on /ignore!! I think the main reason I got no replies is 'cause no one knows who I am and I was mainly attempting to get everyone to do /russdance at the same time, which you kinda need a bit of popularity/charisma to pull off!!
Anyway, I'm disapointed but there's no hard feelings Rare - I'll remember not to use area abilites at potential events in future. It was still a good party, even better than the spontaneous Robo Party at Halloween, at that was some event!

Right, now i'm just confused. In the past Rare has himself said the game and it's development team have an obligation to continue and value the storyline the brothers have handed to them then the next it's "Stuff happens. Whether or not it's worth remembering is a matter of opinion."
What is it then? A serious obligation with fun thrown in or just one big joke?
Cos if it's the latter i just don't know how i should view this game anymore.
#3630019545503/24/2007 05:33:20Re:[7.1.3] Okay, we're gonna make some DJs - Syntax - 3/22/07
Oh come on, CW. You know as well as everyone else that this was a special occasion, and doesn't happen too often (Once a year, actually...)
You'd be fine if it didn't have the chapter tags. But regardless, this event did fall in that chapter bracket, be it canon or not. When Rarebit creates events like this every single day, then be worried (LESIG 2.0, roll out! ) But until then, chill out man.

i think the question to ask is - is an event ingame worthy of "canon" status purely if its six people talking to a live event character and doing nothing else for forty minutes, or something that ultimately involves punching people in the face or shooting at them in a big brawl with a bit of plot thrown in for good measure? and does the scope for "canon" not include stuff that doesn't necessarily involve any of the above? and if not, why not?
neo flying or stopping bullets, or twins turning into "ghosts", or werewolves or magical techno-keys that open up doorways to white corridors are at least as "far out / wacky / whatever" as some uber powerful program with a sense of humour that can change your rsi into a phonebooth for half an hour, and (to me, anyway) at least as valid.

A few things:
1) Bit of trivia. Do you know how many times I remember hearing Paul or any of our past writers or designers mention the word "canon"? Exactly none. Zero. Never. As far as I can tell, that is not a word used by people who are actually involved in the creative process; it is used by observers who come along later and want to categorize things into neat little boxes for themselves. You will not find me referring to things as "canon" or "non-canon," because I don't acknowledge such conveniences as relevant.
2) If a story was so weak that it couldn't withstand an innocent party possibly involving dancing subway cars, would it really be worth defending? Note that I will be very defensive of our story. :ppp
3) Seeing as how you have made it clear that you aren't fond of the flame virus effect, or of mixing critical missions/events with the relatively unscheduled insanity of the large annual events, you may just want to kind of look away during the whole ten days or whatever it is exactly of the upcoming Anniversary event...

I'm not saying it's not within the scope of canon - heck, this is the Matrix we're talking about. Its the fact it was handled in a hugely non-canonical way then not being confirmed/labelled as such.
It was obviously meant for fun and nothing else, not as canon, not as story. Then whats the big deal in just making that clear to everyone (mostly outsiders) by not using the tag system?
Like i've said, i'm all for the event, the fun, the craziness, but not when it's labelled as more than that.
And if the tags are in fact merely a timestamp then simply have another tag like [EFFY INSANITY] or [What If] or [Alternate Universe] or simply [Non-Canon].
Is it all too much to ask for the sake of the story and potential players?

Right, now i'm just confused. In the past Rare has himself said the game and it's development team have an obligation to continue and value the storyline the brothers have handed to them then the next it's "Stuff happens. Whether or not it's worth remembering is a matter of opinion."
What is it then? A serious obligation with fun thrown in or just one big joke?
Cos if it's the latter i just don't know how i should view this game anymore.
Somebody please link him to the video showing what the W brothers did at the end of Path of Neo!

I actually completed Path of Neo again about half an hour ago =P
But the thing with that was they made it perfectly clear all the way through that game's development they were offering 'an alternate ending'.

Bah, I probably give you guys too much credit as it is. :ppp Next time you don't understand something, try using your imagination. It'll be so much more fun than trying to chisel some cut and dried answer out of me. When did the W brothers ever really explain the Architect's dialogue in Reloaded, or the end of Revolutions? I can only dream of being able to be as deliciously vague as they were.
If you want to drop anything that looks too fun out of a story timeline you're composing, then hey, that's your prerogative; go for it! But like I said, stuff happens. This is not a movie, it is a game, and except for cinematics and missions, the story is to a large degree unscripted. I'm not going to do something in the game that I think is detrimental to the story, but I'm also not going to take time out to cater to whatever arbitrary divisions players want to make of things. Do what you like! Put your own spin on it!

Meh. I honestly don't see anything wrong with it. A slightly demented program who likes to have fun. And he's the freaking Effectuator. He brings back the balls to canon.
The Matrix is a simulation where rules change, bend and get destroyed in milliseconds. The Effectuator just does it with subway cars and screen things.
Canon is what you make of it. Are the comics canon? The fact that the Machines created an english bluepill with a deadly illness (incidentally a blessing), constantly changing timelines in order to combat some form of alien race who hurled rocks at earth and took out the Matrix-Australia?
If they did that in game, everyone would complain. People seem to think that the game has to be ruled much stricter. Does make you wonder whether or not the Effy's glasses would be considered horn-rimmed, though.
