Slight problems while running MxO on Windows Vista...

I know, call me a damned fool, but I am of the impatient type. Though I will say the pros of Vista vastly outweigh the cons, there are a few problems I would love to rectify with MxO if at all possible. I realize these problems might not be fixable at the moment... But right now, I'm open to any theories or help any one can give me.

First off, an annoying shading glitch. I think it's due to Vista, though it's daunting to contemplate as to why. Basically, my character's hair/hairline texture or segment on the overall character model is not shading properly like the rest of the model is. While my RSI's face might be brightened by the in-game sun, or shadowed, his hair remains the complete opposite, some times even flipping whatever side of my RSI's face is supposed to be shaded to the other. This means that the top-left of his head is in shadow, while the bottom-left is fully exposed to the light. Observe:






The other problem I have is with the rumored in-game screenshots not working; this rumor is unfortunately true. Whenever I press F12 to take a screenshot, it is rendered as a solid black, 1280x1024 JPEG image. Printscreen also produces the same result. I'm wondering if this is a remnant of some security protocol they attached to Vista when it was a Beta to prevent people from leaking screenshots of its interface, etc, and that they just forget to get rid of it. I am not sure. In any case, I was forced to use FRAPS to bring you the above screenshots.

Beachhead suggests it could be a problem with how Vista emulates DirectX9.0... Though I'm not very well versed in that. Furthermore, that first problem only affects my type of hairstyle and the one that's the same but featuring a ponytail. Any help with these issues will be appreciated.

Last night we tried Nvidia's current vista x86 drivers, which were released on the 5th i believe, and then some new beta drivers released on the 30th that stated they added directx9 compatibility in vista for the 6,7, and 8 series cards. Sykin's being a 7 series i thought this would work, no luck.

Oh crap, sorry, phi. Didn't realize I left out the whole first part of the DXDIAG... Also, thanks for explaining how it all works; makes perfect sense. I think it could be that I haven't installed the drivers right. Windows Vista has this new feature that, when you uninstall a driver completely, it automatically reinstalls it upon restarting... So I just opted out of uninstalling the pre-beta drivers first and installed the newest (beta) ones that Nvidia put out. I still have the same problem. Here's the rest of my DXDIAG, though:

An update: Actually, most male hair styles are affected by this when I look at them, as well as two female hair styles. All of which incorporate sections of revealed skin with the hair, like a receding hairline, mohawk, or crew cut, or basically hair that doesn't reach the "stitching" of the head model (That prevailing widow's peak).

I'm thinking it is something wrong with the drivers as nvidia is supposedly working day and night on official releases for Vista drivers having not done so before its non-business/UK release... A lot of people have reported problems not just with visual effects but even functionality at the moment. I am hoping more drivers will become available as Vista's code is learned in full, but I also hope MxO and games sporting graphics like it aren't on a low-class back-burner.

Ok, I reformatted my harddrive and did a clean install of Vista. Downloaded the MxO client from FilePlanet.com, installed the game, patched, and... The problems are still there. So it can't be my Vista installation.

Perhaps we're narrowing it down to just drivers or how MxO reacts to Windows Vista in some funky way.

I'd also like to add some more bugs I found while playing on Vista.

- When in fullscreen, running at 1280x1024, with or without AA, Overbright does not work. At all. It does when running at 1024x768 but the drawbacks to that are that it's blurry in fullscreen and when in windowed it's all aliased.

- When playing in windowed mode, character nametags do not appear whatsoever. Going back into fullscreen restores them only after press CTRL+T a few times after the setting is implemented.

I've got it running on Vista pretty flawlessly on my laptop, except for the whole screenshot-black-square thing. -_-

Hmm... Pretty... Flawlessly? Are you sure? What sort of resolution are you sporting? Have you checked to see if Overbright works when in fullscreen?

What about the textures on NPC's (Especially the Oracle in any mission with her)?


And you may not notice it at first due to your hair style, but take a look at the shadows on your face. Nothing out of the ordinary (Make sure you have that useropts that illuminates RSI's turned off to see what I mean)?

Hmm yeah I get the same problems as you.

The head shadows differ to the rest of the body,
no overbright in fullscreen mode,
(an odd glitch that I can see the outline of the ingame models with white dots at certain angles)
anti-aliasing useropts dont seem to work no longer
a 60% decrease in FPS (from 30 to 11) on average

however my screenshots are perfect, looks just like how they should be (no black squares or what ever you get in either mode)

and this is with the 64bit vista using a nVidia 7800GT :\  

Huh. That's interesting. I downloaded the 100.59 Forceware drivers (For 32-bit setups of Vista) on Nvidia's main website. They had a link to their latest beta driver from the 97.46 version's page, so I opted for that when 97.46 didn't do anything.

But anyways, the page isn't there any more. They've updated it with a 100.64 version. I'm going to install them and see if anything has changed. Here's the new drivers.

Also, I will get in contact with Derzeki and Gameplaya and tell them to post in 9mmfu's thread with their DXDIAG, as well as any other Vista users I know, like the Bazman Twins.

UPDATE: No, nothing has changed with 100.64... /sigh

im using whatever the cd gave me....so that would be december of last years standard drivers
 maybe someone can point me into the better drivers and tell me what they do. PS ive had bad
experiences with Omega

If you have an nVidia card I'd strongly recommend against any Omega drivers as well. They're generally pretty good for ATI cards though. Every single version of the nVidia omega drivers has had a critical issue.
