It's hard to buy The Matrix Online right now

I checked a local retail store.  No copies of TMO, in fact, the PC section had been scaled back so they only had like 20 games for sale.  Then called EBGames.  "The product has been discontinued", they said.  I checked The Matrix Online official website.  No working links to places that were selling the game.

So, braving the temptation to buy one of their overpriced Girls of Gaming packs, I resorted to Direct2Drive (a Fileplanet service).  That worked.  However, if I didn't know about Direct2Drive, and I was a new player who wanted to try the game, how could I?

I guess what I'm trying to say is, are you aware Marketing is trying to kill you right now?  At least update the main page to point curious players to places that actually have TMO for sale.  Better yet, offer a free download package with subscription required to play it, or something like that.

The reason why there are very few cases for MxO at stores is because they are the old packaging and thus must be changed as they do not have the SOE logo anywhere and still have alot of the older ones. It details things that are going to be changed. Its the same thing with the game cards too

Also the packaging artwork had to be changed with the "death" of morpheus etc

Thanks for the Memories MXO!

as frayjack and midnight said, part of it is because it's being rebranded and the packaging changed.

i also just wanted to mention... take anything any EB games employee ever tells you with a grain of salt. i don't know why they are always hot to proclaim things to be discontinued, but in the most bizarre conversation i ever had with one, and the one that definitively showed me they are talking out of their hats when they say stuff like that (not to mention whoever voiced it had no sense of business), i was informed that a game i was looking for was out of stock, and had been discontinued, because it "sold out too fast". so... a company has a very hot product, one that sells the initial shipments perhaps faster than they expected... one someone definitely invested capital in to see a return on their investment... one a team invested time in to see it's finalization and release... and then they hear that it's sold out, and decide to discontinue the product altogether instead of make more money from it? surely that makes little sense...

So any news on how to get new people in here?  Possible or impossible?  When is the game going to be re-released?  Any news on that?  I've got a person who is interested based on all my pimping of this game but he has no idea how to go about getting it!:smileymad:

My local GAME store is selling it at £4.99, original package.

If there is a GAME store nearby you could ask if they can get hold of one.

Would be nice to get a 14 day trial up and running (i think they had one before but my memory is poor due to alcohol abuse & grinding).

On the other hand, the guy's at PlanetSide (the community) started thier own campaign to get players in with some margin of success i hear. Perhaps we should take a leaf out of thier book and start our own campaign. I'm sure a spam over other forums and the player videos release would have some kind of impact for increasing the player base. (sponsor a bluepill week or something).

If you ask me, the easiest way to get the game is to purchase and download it through Direct2Drive from Fileplanet.   Sure, there's a several hundred megabyte patching process involved, but at least you dont' need to wait 3-5 days of delivery from Amazon.
I wonder when they're going to update those EBGames and Gamespot links with links that actually take you to the product.

One of my biggest beefs with the transition to Sony is the state of the games advertising and marketting.  It's unforutunate Data Node One, has not been updated in content other than news posts, in a very long time.  Also for the longest time after the transition, MxO was not listed on the Station page.  Sadly if I weren't already a member of this community, and I were to come to DN1, it would likely turn me off from purchasing the game.

I managed to find a copy of the original package slightly damaged at Wal-Mart of all places. All other game stores in town were empty of it. The EB Games employee told me the game had been scrapped and the servers taken down. That's pretty harsh just cause they can't get a hold of the product anymore. I agree though, it's hard to find right now.

Theres a ton of them available on Ebay for around 2 to 5 dollars not including shipping but very cheap.

Thanks for the Memories MXO!

Obviously SOE didn't wish to lose more customers by introducing them to MxO as it is now.  I know we are fans, but we are few.  I don't think you can find a positive review of MxO anywhere.

Instead, SOE is apparently going to finish the CR 2.0 and then rerelease MxO as part of an "everything" package.

See http://mxoboards.station.sony.com/matrix/board/message?board.id=soe&message.id=625 for the press release.

I wonder how many more players there would be if, like other MMOs, MxO was marketed to the Asian-Pacific (asia, Australia, New Zealand, etc...) region?

Theres some box you can buy that has MxO, EQII, SWG and some other game in it.  I saw it at EB Games last night.

That's the Station Access pack. It includes base versions of EQ2, EverQuest, SWG, and PlanetSide in addtion to MxO, for $40, and is being sold at places like Wal-Mart. Note that you need to purchase expansions for EQ2, EQ and SWG if you want the entire game.

Each game includes 30 days of play time, apparently starting from when you first login to each game, so it's not that bad of a deal if you're just looking to start out in those games.
