I have seriously wondered how Planetside is doing these days. I
remember the design and concept of the game to be extremely cool and
fun, but when I played it first hand, while being impressed, there was
lag like I could not believe. Does the same problems persist or has the
"Planetside" become something worth fighting (paying) for?

First impressions right now is that there is precious little in the way of lag on my system, that said I live really near my local telephone exchange and my 2MB broadband connection regularily gets confused with a T3 connection by most software. Plus right now there is a 10 day trial on offer on the main Planetside website.

Oh, whoa, thanks for the info on that free trial! 2MB connection... Jesus.

PlanetSide is definately worth a go, at the end of the day there is NO
other game available with as many players working together.

CS is more twitch based IMHO, PlanetSide is more a king of the hill tactical type game.
Besides you can't fly stuff, drive tanks, and run round looking like mech warrior in CS.

Dont forget CS is not a mmo.
In CS you cant have 100's of people and each side kill each other.

Sykin,
Interestingly enough I work mainly on PlanetSide and MxO so I'd have to say that I like it (I'm biased too though). But if you look at the fact that PlanetSide can deliver you something that no other game can (MMO FPS) then it's a super game. In terms of lag that has been something that development has pressed to improve the who lifespan of the game and it has improved (they even improved and shrank the memory footprint of the game).
If you run into trouble in terms of performance I have set up a sticky thread in the Tech Forums for PlanetSide which is the "End all Be all" thread for performance tips for PlanetSide. I think you'll enjoy it but that's just my 2 cents. :smileywink:

i get more lag on this than planetside so i wouldnt worry lol TSR any chance of talking to the devs and telling them we need the lag fixed?
#1230000023609/08/2005 09:12:50Re: Fighting for the "Planetside"
Planetside rocks man, it seems to be doing fine still. They've got achievement badges and BFRs and Battle rank is up to like 25 now. Not too bad. Don't know if there will be any other expansions released for it ever again, though.
#1230000029909/22/2005 00:10:26Re: Fighting for the "Planetside"
Yea planetside is worth it, its unique. Im currently a BR 23 CR 3 NC named KiCKJr running with D2A im a major sergeant hoping to get lieutenant which i badly want.
#1230000031309/22/2005 09:54:46Re: Fighting for the "Planetside"
I'm a tank driver, BFR'er (GV and FV variants), and Uni-MAX'er on
Planetside. Had alot of fun playing it. No complaints about
lag even during massive vehicle battles on large battlefields like
Cyssor, Ishundar, and Searhus.
Any game that complains they can't implement something cause it will
cause too much lag needs to be show some of these battles in PS.
Their problem isn't technical limitation but design flaw.
#1230000033609/24/2005 07:56:01Re: Fighting for the "Planetside"
I have a Planetside account that is close at the momnet because I can only pay for one game at a time.
I am going to update to the Station pass So i can start playing it again ( also I wanna Try SWG)
But when I did play planetside I didnt have much lag and the games is still fun to me, can't wait to start playing it again.

Planetside was a great game, to bad they dont sell it anymore in local shops in the UK, and SOE wont let you download it from their website.

Thank you for replying, Mr. TSR-Joel. Sorry for getting this thanks so
late... I'll definitely look into getting PS when I have the time. It's
convinent to have this nifty Station Pass as well.
Seems like SWG has taken notes from PS. Heard it's likely to be a FPS now? Interesting.
Any chance we may see some CTF style of play for PvP in MxO? That would
be pretty awesome. As far as I'm concerned, Organizations will function
like the NC, the VS, and the TR for the chance to stand around Mara C
unoppressed. Why not make it a challenge for different areas of the
Matrix daily? Or at least weekly.
/imaginefightingforcontrolofdatanodeinsaikung
Heh, but that's the Matrix. Hope to see some of you in PS. What servers are you all on?
#1230000048611/16/2005 03:39:52Re: Fighting for the "Planetside"
Heh... I wish I would have checked the PS tech forums before I bought
the game and downloaded and all that good stuff a half hour ago. Seems
there's a patcher bug going around where you can't even get into the
game, it simply continually says "Updating" even after when it's
finished patching, so you never get the "Play" option in the PS
LaunchPad. Even worse I can't even post the fact I have the same
problem that quite a few others have in Tech forums there because aside
from your station membership you need to get some d*mn "Fan club"
membership as well to register in their forums, but the problem is the
link they provide for this "Fan club" thing is dead, so I have no way
of registering into the PS forums.
*sigh* I've always been a real strong advocate for SOE since the early
days of EQ, never had anything bad to say about them for years, but
these past couple days seemed have to changed all of that - as it's
been nothing but one surmounting screw up after another. I'm just
hoping they rectify these things soon before my faith in their ability
is completely lost. :smileymad:
#1230000048711/16/2005 09:02:56Re: Fighting for the "Planetside"
Hey Joel! Good to hear from ya!
As an employee of a different division of Sony, I was given all the SOE MMO games for free(except MxO, they hadn't purchased it yet). Planetside remains my favorite, simply for the fact that it is a true MMO FPS. It's a GREAT idea for a game, and I almost wish more of the games I play would follow their lead. I have never had any problems with it from the get-go(except one minor hiccup - but that was my account, not the game). I play as InitCG for VS on Emerald. MxO is a great game too, I've been playing since Beta(with a very long pause there for a while) and it's one of the cooler themed games I've played.
My only complaint is that it gets REALLY repetative, and for how difficult it is to level up, I just get bored before I can advance. My favorite part of the game remains the interaction between 'radio' stations, such as Awakened Radio and the late Radio Free Zion, from within the game. This adds an element of realism and community to the game which is lacking in many other MMO games. Props to the AwR crew for keepin' it real!
Anyways, thanks!
-Rob (InitCG)
Also, what are the chances of finding out my beta key from registration info? Any info would be appreciated...I don't know if I have my card or what, but I'm looking.

Well, they have made it decently easier to get on. Hell, they got a Free Full Year Trial going right now.
Just download any one of these web installers, and hit "New Account" Let it patch, and hit Play
(p.s. If ya do, make sure to find an Outfit (aka Guild) that uses Teamspeak/Ventrilo.)
#3630003938009/02/2006 12:15:36Re:Fighting for the "Planetside"
I downloaded it from the Reserves site at the PS main page, but it doesn't work. I always freeze up at the "Connecting" screen. Anything I can do to fix that?
#3630003957409/02/2006 17:23:39Re:Fighting for the "Planetside"
For the record, Planetside offers a free trial known as the "Planetside Reserves". This is a freeplay account, good for a year, that you can sign up for. You are limited in your rank, but if you upgrade the account by clicking the link on the screen when you logout, you get the full Planetside account and 30 days on your account to continue playing. That way, you don't have to actually buy the game from a store.
Plus, all Planetside accounts get Core Combat for free.
