If QA is succesful would it be possible for it to stay up after QA goes live or even stay up for a group of dedicated testers...like beta?

As far as I'm aware, we haven't said that the QA server is temporary. It's my impression that it is here to stay as a mighty game-improving implement! But I could be mistaken.
#10400134468 12/21/2005 03:17:25 Re: Ask the devs an MXO question

Hmm ok well I cant think of any more MxO stuff since its 3:20 AM...so, how was your day today?
#10400134469 12/21/2005 03:20:22 Re: Ask the devs an MXO question
Since the above question's kinda....mmfft, Aren't you guys worried that everyone will just play on the QA server and not the others?
#10400134470 12/21/2005 03:31:21 Re: Ask the devs an MXO question
Would it be possible to get a roleplaying flag (/rp toggle) to indicate
those players who are in character? Or, as this is an rpg (as far as I
know), to indicate those who don't roleplay SMILEY

Well, anything's possible, given enough broiled cheese.

I can see something like that being abused pretty quickly, though. Maybe it's just better to assume that everyone is RP-ing until they prove otherwise?
#10400134472 12/21/2005 03:37:49 Re: Ask the devs an MXO question
I don't want this to be a question, just to be read and considered.
Apparently, other mmo's use an rp 'flag', so if it works there, why not
here... and besides, perhaps those who are not interested in
roleplaying would like to be shown 'untoggled' SMILEY

EDIT: to be sure this is not a question hehe! Where do we send the broiled cheese bribes?

Just what sort of abuse do you see arising from an RP flag?

Sorry PBlade, but I cringed when I saw your edit... especially after
what I had written on my post! Good follow up question on the RP flag,
I am sure many rpers would like to see something like this implemented.

EDIT: yes Fenshire I'm surprised there isn't one of those..

Well, if this has been done successfully in other MMOs, then I'm sure there's a way to do it right (which maybe should be discussed in a separate thread), but if it's just a flag toggle, my immediate thought was that any non-RP gankhead would toggle the flag on and go dance around other people who are actually trying to RP.
#10400134482 12/21/2005 03:50:10 Re: Ask the devs an MXO question
Then they could be reported and banned from using it! Please look into this, it would be nice.

Of course, then I would have to change my /rp macro for loading my Virologist loadout.

Huh, no question marks here...must not be a question. I'll just wait for the next post, then.

Or, I could just say that I don't know what the ETA is. I believe the last one Walrus gave was the earliest time it might be available. If it's been delayed, then Walrus only knows what the new ETA is.

Obviously Dataminer!

Actually IMO it's gotta be Despoiler... isn't it something like -50 CT to the whole area, for 3 minutes? And it only requires level 30? That's just wrong.

And why is that level 30, while an AOE enrage ability is level 38? *boggle*

I
don't think I'd say it's being degraded or anything, just changing the
overall way that CT works... my impression is that all of your CT will
be coming from the style you are using, so you only get self defense CT
when you are using self-defense style, and you'll only get CT from
hacker when you're using hacker style.

is exiting missions via the window instead of the door a realistic posability for the game engine?

Tseng. wrote:

Not at this point. Doors (or moving windows) are game objects that control a little sliver of what we call "NavMesh" (tm!) on the ground, covering the width of the door. Every area in the game that allows you to stand on it is covered with this invisible layer of NavMesh. If an area doesn't have NavMesh, you can't stand there. Simple as that. So the only thing that stops you from walking right through a wall, for instance, is that there's no NavMesh going through that wall.

So if you wanted to go out a window, that window would have to have NavMesh in it, connected to the ground on either side of the window. This would require new window/wall geometry for every room type in which you wanted one of these windows. You'd probably need a pretty good number of them to match even a small amount of our existing decor types. That would be a considerable art task.

Then you'd need to create a window game object to put in place of the existing windows, which would toggle the NavMesh on the window sill on and off, just like doors toggle the NavMesh in their doorway on and off. That would be relatively easy.

But then you'd need to go and place that window object, along with the new wall geometry, in our existing rooms. In our world design tool system, this would mean exploding each type of building into its component floors, exploding each floor type into its component rooms, exploding each room type into its component floor/wall/ceiling pieces, replacing the old window with the new window art and window game object, then rebundling the room (this does cool stuff like calculating the interior lighting and generating the NavMesh), rebundling the floor, and rebundling the building. Oh, and then you have to rebundle the entire world.

Not only would that take forever, but it would generate a patch so huge that it would crash the internet, ending civilization as we know it.

Before civilization ended, though, we might have to consider how to get players and NPC followers to play some kind of "I'm ducking and crawling through a window now" animation.

One slightly modified approach might be just to play that animation and 'port the user through the window, if it were unlocked, rather than using a NavMesh, but then we'd have to have the game object know how to handle that kind of teleportation, and we'd have to teach NPCs to know how to activate it.

It would be simpler, therefore, just to end civilization straight off the bat.

I think that's awesome! NPCs should express themselves more often. Power to the programs!

This might be related to a known bug where the AI sometimes decides to walk to the 0,0,0 coordinate of the world, though. Going back to their birthplace, perhaps? Or maybe they've been ordered to report for recycling, poor things.

You know, one of our mission designers typo'd the Merovingian's name like that once, and we never let him live it down. SMILEY

Anyway yes, the restaurant and the chateau are in the game, and we devs go there and drink wine and eat cake with Persephone every day! It's pretty sweet!

But if I were going to reply seriously, I would have to say that no, they are not in the game.
