For spell checking, its the Red Check mark in the upper right when creating your post.

Pros: Everything everyone already said about the pros.

Cons: Ranking should be what Globin suggested. this would be great for the old timers (hopefully ya add in the master account time from beta) for the colored nicks to show senority.

Search bar: omgwtfbbqleeroyjenkins what have you done with this great tool? You put it at the bottom of the page? it should be at the top for all to see. This is a Requirment, or a Law, it has to be at the top.

Also i am having troubles with the Remember me cookie as well.

4rk,

You need to use HTML for your sig:

< img src="../../jcarey1992.html" alt="title" >

(but without the spaces and the correct path to the image)

Lets get back on topic.....I dont really care about the forums. Although it could be a little bit more user friendly. I tried to get to this forum and i kept going in circles from the homepage.
#10300000054 08/16/2005 20:34:27 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux

To much time has passed so i cant edit my first one.

More cons: Pms on the forums does not Auto fill the Send to section. And the Options drop down menu needs to have a more defined Window.

#10300000055 08/16/2005 20:45:53 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
I'm reposting this from the General Discussion boards, regarding the possibility of being able to use custom icons/avatars:

1. When a person has a high enough combined post count and rating,
they'd earn the ability to use their own custom icon. Unfortunately,
the rating system can be abused. Archived image unavailable: 16x16_smiley-sad.html

2. Incorporate Gravatar support.
Gravatars are linked to email addresses, so a Gravatar would
automatically be applied as long as that person submitted their
Gravatar under the same email they use here. Each submitted Gravatar is
individually rated and given a content rating, which allows site
publishers to restrict avatars with only a certain range of ratings.

This way, SOE doesn't have to worry about inappropriate avatars, as
they can just restrict the R (and maybe PG-13) rated Gravatars. An
added bonus is that anyone who has a Gravatar can also use it on any
other site that supports them!

Either way, custom icons would be the shiznit. Archived image unavailable: 16x16_smiley-very-happy.html

I haven't used these knew forums much, so I don't really know wether I'll like them or not overall, but I do like the new layout.
#10300000057 08/17/2005 01:29:59 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux

After some use, I find that I like these forums better than the old ones.  It would, however, be nice to have some sort of access to archived versions of the old boards.

A couple of Pros:

- Boards are now basically together, instead of the over organization of the past where getting to everything you wanted required far too many unneeded clicks.

- User Customization

A couple of cons:

- I want to be able to use my own avatar/icon... and being able to customize things even further (like adding background images for instance) would be great

- I suppose this may already exist somewhere here, but I want to be able to make my own personal board list, or at least be able to re-order the way the boards currently appear.  Basically, I want to be able to create a "favorites" list of the individual boads I visit all the time.  For example, I don't ever plan to go to the PvP board so I would rather it not appear and clutter up my listing.

Also, it's not saving my password either SMILEY

I liked the old forums better because I was a Moderator there.  SMILEY   Can I still be one here?

The Tech Help Form is great and Joel seems very helpful and friendly.  We gotta get him a better handle though.

I would suggest you talk to Walrus about that, there was a lot of disscussions already on this matter.

Just waiting on a return PM for that.  Sent one about a week ago
and haven't heard since.  Maybe I should send another. SMILEY

#10300000062 08/17/2005 07:27:12 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux

From what I can tell from the get go, the cookies on the board do not work.  If I tell it to save my password it does not do it.  Also if you add any text under your signature image, for some reason its not displaying propperly.

Not having the ability to upload your own avatar is painful.  Not that I have a awesome avatar that I want to use but the current selection is a bit lame.

Ya i dunno about walrus replying to pms, he has been busy and is probably off today.

Um..... From what I recall PM's on the old board didn't work to great when directed at the admin crew, plus if you PM'd him a week ago then those were the boards you were using to do it, which no longer exist as far as I can tell. Safest option, PM him again and assume he didn't get the last one. But remember, PM'ing the Admins doesn't always work, it depends on how the boards are set up.

#10300000065 08/17/2005 08:14:43 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
i personally like the forums the way they were before, however, with time, i will get use to this i guess.

#10300000066 08/17/2005 08:57:35 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
I'm just happy to be able to post to the forums at all - my pre-conv account was somehow screwed up and would only log me in as "null".  So this works for me!
#10300000067 08/17/2005 09:39:55 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
Functionally, I like the new forums much better than the old
ones.  Bookmarks, subscriptions (as soon as the email problem is
fixed), HTML editor in Firefox, and customizability (is that a word?)
are all really nice features.

I personally don't think the rating system will be that big of a
problem.  Helpful messages will receive high ratings, and troll
messages will receive low ratings.  Sure, there is room for
exploitation, but I expect it to work as designed for the most
part.  Time will tell.

Of course, the biggest problem is content.  I managed to save my
most important messages, but there is still a lot of good stuff on the
old forums.  Making that available read-only would be nice.

Another little thing is that replies don't indicate which message is
being replied to (unless I'm overlooking it), and that makes
conversations harder to follow.

#10300000069 08/17/2005 11:25:05 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
Personally, I'm not even noticing the ratings...I guess they're only a issue if you pay attention to that sort of thing. SMILEY

The biggest con to me is the inability to change your forum name. If I decide to start playing a new character on another server (or the same server, for that matter) I may not want posts related to that character showing up under DeetyMxo (or Deety, which I lost during the forum wipe [*please* help us get those back.]) If I decide to start another character on Syntax so as to get involved in the RP there, for example, it's very possible I wouldn't want there to be any ties from that character to Deety.

I'm assuming this problem exists on other SOE forums as well; anyone know how they deal with it there?

#10300000070 08/17/2005 14:34:09 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
I'm guessing here, but do forum only accounts exist and if so, do they actually cost anything?
#10300000071 08/17/2005 20:09:15 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
forums are forums.... what sony needs to be fixing is the buddy list.... with aim we could type "/ga name" to make a group.. and this was simple and easy for factions to organize and group players on their buddy lists  such as factions, orgs, hitlists etc..

so SOE, UPGRADE THE BUDDY LIST with:

"/GA  <Name>"

Good day
#10300000072 08/18/2005 02:11:27 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux

Ok I haven't read the previous posts (too much reading scares me), so if somebody's already said this you can't yell at me.

The Rating System
I think it's somewhat unstable considering how somebody could hold a grudge against you and start ranking you a 1 every post.  I find it to be pretty much useless, but I'm sure all those Awakened's (is that the highest level?) out there are feeling proud.

Forum Decorum
Hmm....maybe it's just me, but these new forums look awfully bland in comparison to the originals.  These are the style you'd see in one of those video game fansites that's made unprofessionaly.

New Features
Well all the new stuff is defintely a bonus.  I think having avatars is cool (somebody suggested we have our UI pics in them instead of misc. art), but they could use a little Matrixy theme.  You can do a lot more text editing in posts too, which is also an obvious bonus.  There's a bunch more stuff but I won't post it all.

There's my 2 $info

#10300000073 08/18/2005 02:23:10 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
i'd like it if my signature worked.  i keep getting this error
that says i can't use simple HTML in my signature.  SOE also says
that they can't help me b/c it's server-side and SOE doesn't run the
boards.  and lithium (the guys who host the boards) has yet to
respond to me.

Actually as best I can tell, "Controller" is the highest rating. After someone went through 1 starring mine, and several other's posting history, our ratings dropped to "Awakened". Others have now either dropped to, or risen to "operative" which seems to be just below controller.

But that raises the other reason why this rating/level system is useless, no one has been told in any official capacity which rank is what and what it means! It just seems all so random right now.

As for the "plainess" of these boards, I like it. They load faster. But, other people should be given the choice of having a bunch of graphical bells and whistles if that's what they want. In fact, I wouldn't mind the boards being plainer still so I could read them quickly while using a lower connection speed (sometimes I get stuck on a really old connection >_>)

But these boards should all be about choice. The options are there (for other schemes) they just need to be created. I would also like to be able to turn the avatars off as that too would cut down the loading time... But I don't recall seeing that option anywhere yet.
#10300000075 08/18/2005 09:08:53 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
I'm already used to these forums from SWG and like there I would like them to use the whole width of my screen.

Else I'm quite happy and hope the search will work a bit more stable than on the SWG boards.

#10300000076 08/18/2005 20:47:01 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
I think the selection of icons could be a lot better, they are pretty stupid.

please put something of forum that i can modify the forum Nickname on profile please!!!

#10300000078 08/20/2005 07:37:46 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
I'm sure that some must have
already mentioned spoiler tags but I'll request them again just
incase.  I'd also like to see local time tags so I don't have to
translate PST time to EST time.  I also don't think the board is
to plain.  I log on to read, not be distracted by the other
elements.  Just my preference though.

#10300000079 08/20/2005 21:06:16 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
I do like the idea of a rating system, though as others have said, the
one in place is not really useful. I'd like to see something along the
lines of the user-moderation/karma system they use on Slashdot to
prevent abuse (and therefore actually give the ratings some meaning).
Once something like that's in place, the ability to filter out
low-rated messages would be nice as well (so we can at least weed out
the "OMG sHuT uP N3bZ0R U R T3h sUx0x0r"-type posts).

#10300000080 08/21/2005 02:00:52 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux

Its Ok

#10300000081 08/21/2005 06:29:22 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
The rating system is pointless, as many have stated before, and makes posts look too cluttered.

If at all possible, it would be nice to replace the icons we have now
with the class ability icons from the game such as Gunslinger, Kung Fu
Grandmaster, Master Knife Thrower, etc. I would even volunteer to do
these icons in whatever format desired.

Keep up the good stuff.

With all due respect . . .  Who gives a rat's *CENSORED* about the new forums?!?!?!?, they work right?  lets move on to class balancing and bug fixes PLZ!!!!

How do you change Forum nicks?

You buy a new copy of the game.

Or in other words, as forum accounts are tied to your CD key, you cannot change it.
#10300000085 08/23/2005 10:56:58 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
The rating system is bunk. They had the same thing when SWG first started up, but over time as too many people abused it, they took it away.

Some Matrix-esque forum icons would be nice intead of the generic ones that are on now.
#10300000108 08/24/2005 05:38:22 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux
I'd like to see an option to view all unaswered posts, although I wouldn't be a bit surprised if that is hidden somewhere.

This may or may not be relevant, but you know what I think would be really great? The introduction of close combat hand to hand weapons. Like knives, blackjacks, swords, jo staves and the like. makes things a little cooler to be able to flip around off a buliding and crack a man in the head with a six foot stick, y aknow what I mean?
#10300001321 11/07/2005 21:23:26 Re: New Forum Likes and Dislikes: Redux

eep, looks like everyone had their say months ago.  since i am back and am now back to trolling when on the road for work i suppose i'll pitch in my two cents:

very functional, no complaints on that end.  like having spell check (though i rarely remember to use it!) and the whole tool bar there with each reply.   i also like the way the boards are set up and how i can see all the general topics before going to the vector boards.

however, i do think there are probs asthetically, and i can't even put my finger on what it is.  (yeah, i'm a big help lol)  it just doesn't have the matrixy feel... is the green a different shade?  oh well.

keep plugging away at the important stuff in game and keep silly suggestions like mine on the backburner.
