The article doesn't say "new" for a reason.
Listening to players is tricky. It was players who first gave me the idea of putting pants on them, and I documented what I was doing in my usual places on the forum--in this case I think it was series of images in the Dev Screenshots thread in Image Retrieval. The outcry from a few people who didn't like the change only came a good deal later, once the change hit Live.
I still think that combat clothing that forces you to go pantsless isn't a great idea. That's why the items with actual combat buffs no longer do that. On the other hand, we have a tradition of giving out non-combat clothing over the holidays for fun, and bathrobes are just fine for that; since it turned out that some people liked the old style, it seemed worthwhile to bring it back in this more appropriate form. I think most people will also find the eight bathrobe color selections to be an improvement over the gi colors (thanks to extensive internet...research >_>). And don't worry; if women's bathrobes (not male--check that mockup image's filename...) aren't your thing, there will still be plenty of other holiday items this year.
