Figured there wasn't a discussion for any Football (soccer) so I'd go ahead and make one like the NFL discussion thread.

The UEFA Champions League kicked off last night and there was already a shock result with FC Cluj of Romania, debutants in the competition, scoring a win against Roma in Rome one of the toughest places to go to throughout Europe. The question is whether they can match the might of Chelsea in the next round of matches. They will have the advantage of home soil.

GROUP A:
Chelsea 4-0 Bordeaux Match report
Roma 1-2 CFR Cluj-Napoca
GROUP B:
Panathinaikos 0-2 Inter Milan
Werder Bremen 0-0 Anorthosis Famagusta
GROUP C:
Barcelona 3-1 Sporting
Basle 1-2 Shakhtar Donetsk
GROUP D:
Marseille 1-2 Liverpool Match report
PSV 0-3 Atletico Madrid

Tonight sees Manchester United, Arsenal (England) and Celtic (Scotland) in action. Hopefully all do well for the sake of the reputation of their home leagues. (Though if Celtic lose I'll be happy SMILEY)

Wednesday, 17 September 2008
Celtic v AaB, Gp E, 19:45
Dynamo Kiev v Arsenal, Gp G, 19:45
FC Porto v Fenerbahce, Gp G, 19:45
Juventus v Zenit St Petersburg, Gp H, 19:45
Lyon v Fiorentina, Gp F, 19:45
Man Utd v Villarreal, Gp E, 19:45
Real Madrid v BATE, Gp H, 19:45
Steaua Bucuresti v Bayern Munich, Gp F, 19:45

The game of the night will be Juventus vs Zenit St Petersburg, for me. Don't be suprised if Zenit pull off a victory, either. There is a huge amount of money and quality in the Russian leagues right now and the UEFA Cup winners of last year, beating Rangers 2-0, will be darkhorses in this years Champions League.

~~

The English Premiership has seen an interesting start with the biggest suprise being that Spurs are at the bottom of the league after 4 games, feel sorry for Gareth (Bale), having shelled out £70m on new players it's rather suprising to see them languished at the bottom but as the saying goes it's a marathon not a sprint.

Liverpool and Chelsea sit joint top, with Liverpool bouyed by their first League win over Manchester United in over 4 years at the weekend, running out deserved 2-1 winners. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool can finally mount a challenge on the league title having been in the top 4 for the past 3 years but not good enough to challenge the front runners of Manchester United or Chelsea, certainly for Liverpool fans this is long overdue.

Saturday, 20 September 2008
Blackburn v Fulham, 15:00
Bolton v Arsenal, 17:30
Liverpool v Stoke, 15:00
Sunderland v Middlesbrough, 12:45
West Ham v Newcastle, 15:00
Sunday, 21 September 2008
Chelsea v Man Utd, 14:00
Hull v Everton, 15:00
Man City v Portsmouth, 15:00
Tottenham v Wigan, 15:00
West Brom v Aston Villa, 12:00

The pick of the fixtures this weekend is Chelsea vs Manchester United on Sunday, that should be a thriller.

~~

The Scottish Premierleague sees Rangers out in front(Woot) at the top by 3 points ahead of archrivals Celtic, whom they beat 4-2 at Celtics home ground two weeks ago, and Kilmarnock both tied on 10points. Rangers ended Kilmarnocks spell as the only team in the UK not to have conceeded a goal by narrowly beating them 2-1 in the battle to become out right leaders of the league, both teams had entered the match level on 10points but Rangers took all 3 thanks to Kris Boyd. New comers to the league Hamilton have made a good start to their campaign beating favourites for 3rd place Dundee United in their opening game in the league and laying in 4th place. United had been tipped for third but find themselves rockbottom after 5 matches with a measley 2 points. Celtic and Motherwell are flying the flag in Europe for Scotland this year after Rangers' early shock exit.

Saturday, 20 September 2008
Aberdeen v Dundee Utd, 12:30
Hamilton v Hibernian, 15:00
Hearts v Inverness CT, 15:00
St Mirren v Falkirk, 15:00
Sunday, 21 September 2008
Kilmarnock v Celtic, 16:00
Rangers v Motherwell, 15:00

The pick of the fixtures this weekend is Kilmarnock against Celtic at Rugby Park. 2nd vs 3rd and having being beaten by Rangers this weekend, Kilmarnock will want to bounce back and continue their good start to the season, though it will be a very difficult task to do so against Celtic. Coming back from a european match can tire a team though and Celtic will have to cope.

Please, add whatever you want about the MLS, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue1, Eredivisie, A-League, J-League, Russian Premier League etc etc. I just don't have the time to add more about those just now.

Discuss anything and everying about football, transfers, scores, scandals, etc etc.

I honestly don't care how Liverpool fare in the Champion's League this season.  They've won it once, been to a final that we would've won had it not been for terrible tactical decisions, and proven that we're one of top three teams on the European stage.  With that in mind, I'd much rather they donk out early and concentrate on the Premiership.

The 'Gers MUST and i mean MUST win the league this year.

Canny be going through all that qualification nonsence for Champions League again!!!

Yah, and condeming Celtic to it next year might earn us some added cash in the process if they drop out :p

I think I under-estimated Riera, he really looked the part on Saturday and could be the key to Liverpool becoming successful this season. Torres better start scoring though, he's in my fantasy football team. I'm sure he will since he's a god.

Cheers Yas!

Aye but it could definately work in our favour if they have more games to play.

Still i reckon with the signings Smith has made this season we really should manage to get that trophy back!

#36300499427 09/17/2008 08:34:39 Re:FIFA Football Season 08/09
Pedro Mendes was the missing link. I wonder how Barry will get back into the team now. :o

Special mention for the American Maurice Edu, though, him and Davie Weir both came through the scholarship system so it's it's a little incentive to see them end up at the club I support.

I think Rangers will win the league though, yes.

Actually, I saw that headline and didn't read it. I guess that's testament to our current midfields success.

I'm really wondering how everyone will fit in to our midfield, Thomson doesn't deserve to be dropped. Ferguson was obviously missed when we dropped out of the CL, anyone who says he doesn't influence the team was proved wrong by that performance but Thomson really stepped up to the plate and scored in that game too so /shrug.

I think Ferguson will last two more seasons at the most anyway. Probably retire the season after World Cup 2010 if we get there, or will retire that season if we don't. Injuries have killed the tail end of his career.

Davis will be our captain when Ferguson gives it up.

I like the sound of Davis for captain.

Haha. Zlatan is the ultimate enigma, he can be amazing one minute and horrible the next. Did you see his miss in the first half? It was like what the hell?

Tony, maybe you can answer this for me, do Panathiniakos have a new stadium? When Rangers played them last year the stadium was much more compact, I remember.

Tonights results saw a couple of suprises.

Man United were held at home by Villareal but the return of Cristiano Ronaldo will have lifted United fans spirits ahead of the crunch match on Sunday which could see Chelsea make a 9point gap over the champions so early in the season. Celtic were also held at home, in the same group, by Aalborg. Celtic wasted a penalty and had numerous opporunities but the Danes didn't look like mugs either and always looked dangerous on the break, and despite the Danish side going down to 10-men, Celtic couldn't break through.

Else where, a little disappointed in Zenit, they were the better team but lost to Juve. Fiorentina gave a good showing in Lyon but Karim Benzema, being one of the best strikers in Europe inspired their come back to draw 2-2 scoring and setting up a goal.

GROUP E:
Celtic 0-0 Aalborg
Man Utd 0-0 Villarreal
GROUP F:
Lyon 2-2 Fiorentina
Steaua Bucharest 0-1 Bayern Munich
GROUP G:
Dynamo Kiev 1-1 Arsenal
Porto 3-1 Fenerbahce
GROUP H:

Real Madrid 2-0 BATE Borisov

I expect Spurs to grab their first win of the season tonight and that will get their season back on track. Motherwell of Scotland, sole flyers of the Scottish flag in the UEFA Cup, have been thrown a tough tie against Nancy of France but if they play to their best like last seasons form that got them into Europe then they should make it through. Good luck to all of them.

The group stage will be where things heat up.

Whatever.  If my team wins it I will run along Tottenham High Road naked singing, "My old man's a dust man...", while eating frozen jellied eels.  Or, something.
I'd drive into London just to witness that! Spurs FTW!
We won our first one....SMILEY

Long overdue if you ask me.

Should be the start of Spurs season now.

Thankfully Motherwell containted Nancy to just 1 goal away from home so hopefully they can do it back home in two weeks time, their goalkeeper played really well and Darren got the last 30mins of the game which was cool.

Villa thumped Litex, after they had 2 players sent off, 3-1. Spurs broke their duck, finally! Brazilian Jo broke his duck for Man City, scoring twice as they won 2-1. Everton, though, drew 2-2 and have a difficult task of getting through now and Portsmouth won 2-0 in their European debut.

The finish to this weeks football weekend was a lot more exciting than the beginning.

Saturday, 20 September 2008
Barclays Premier League
Blackburn 1-0 Fulham
Bolton 1-3 Arsenal
Liverpool 0-0 Stoke
Sunderland 2-0 Middlesbrough
West Ham 3-1 Newcastle

Sunday, 21 September 2008
Chelsea 1-1 Man Utd
Hull 2-2 Everton
Man City 6-0 Portsmouth
Tottenham 0-0 Wigan
West Brom 1-2 Aston Villa

Chelsea vs Manchester United lived up to expectations. Sometimes big games disapoint due to the tension and teams not wanting to lose the game but both sides played good football and on the balance of play I think maybe Chelsea shaded it but couldn't pull out the victory. They did keep their 4 year, 85 game unbeaten Premierleague Home run going though which has been the corner stone of their success in recent years.

In the most suprising result of the weekend, Man City thumped Portsmouth 6-0. It was a freak result, one which City were on the end of last year when Middlesbrough thumped them 7-1.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa won a thrilling Midlands derby against West Brom, Sunderland came out ontop in the North East derby against Middlesbrough largely thanks to saves from Craig Gordon and a missed penalty by Stewart Downing and Liverpool failed to capitalise on last weeks win over Man United by drawing at home to Stoke, Fernando Torres still with just a single goal to his name this season which came on the opening day. A frustrating day all round.

Spurs kept up their unfortunately poor Premierleague form, drawing 0-0 at home to Wigan. Until Pavlyuchenko and Bent start firing Spurs will continue to be down in the dumps, having only 3 first team strikers in their squad, the other being Frazier Campbell.

Clydesdale Bank Premier League
Aberdeen 0-1 Dundee Utd
Hamilton 0-1 Hibernian
Hearts 1-0 Inverness CT
St Mirren 1-1 Falkirk

Sunday, 21 September 2008
Kilmarnock 1-3 Celtic
Rangers 2-1 Motherwell

The opening game of the weekends fixtures in the SPL was live on TV...unfortunately. Aberdeen v Dundee United was settled by a penalty and despite some good football from United in patches, it was ultimately a boring contest. Derek Riordan got off the mark on his return to Hibs as they beat Hamilton 1-0 and their rivals Hearts kept up their quietly impressive start to the season, holding 2nd place for all of 24 hours beating Inverness 1-0.

Rangers kicked off an hour before Celtic with the chance to put them under a bit of pressure and taking a 6 point lead if they beat Motherwell. Regular goalkeeper Alan McGregor was dropped after a series of poor performances for Rangers. Steven Davis and Nacho Novo grabbed the goals for the home side before a below par Well scored a late consolation. Celtic didn't buckle under the pressure, despite Maloney missing a penalty and Aiden McGeady being left out the team again. Maloney made up for his penalty miss and Samaras grabbed a brace as Kilmarnock pulled back a late goal.

I knew it SMILEY Was hoppin for a win but as usual, Killie suck lol We're drawing on points with Celtic so lets just hope that we can pull through (we always get an alright start at the beggining but towards half way we lose it then pick it back up at the end SMILEY)

I just hope we do a bit better than last year, considerin Gretna ain't in the league to save us from relegation like last season...

#36300501618 09/22/2008 02:47:34 Re:FIFA Football Season 08/09
I think Killie will be fine, they suffered the past couple of years because they lost Naismith and Boyd in consecutive seasons but they've got some new signings in this year and Combe has been in good form in goals.
