True, but I'm not going to let a bunch of highly paid, waste of space footballers spoil my summer.
However I know what it's like when England are in a tournament. We swamp the stands, and flood the streets. I miss the anticipation, flags on cars, country and bbqs, parties and big screens in city centers...
Best not to lament on English summers
I will try my best to enjoy summer w/o Eng this year :p

Euro '96 was like no other Summer in memory. There was such an atmosphere on the streets. Of course, the team threw it away as usual, but I'll always remember the month I had national pride.
On topic, I'm predicting a France/Greece (pesky little buggers) final, with France taking it by a slither. Hopefully, it won't be as predictable and boring as the FA Cup final just was.
#3630045620005/17/2008 09:26:04Re:UEFA Euro 2008 - Official Thread
Well, looking at how the teams will face up *if* things go how I expect them to I think we'll see
Group A: Portugal, Czech Republic, Turkey and Switzerland (Though I think the Czechs lack of a world class striker may hinder them, so keep an eye on Turkey for second maybe)
Group B: Croatia, Germany, Poland and Austria
Group C: Italy, France, Holland and Romania. (I don't think it's beyond Romania or Holland to get results in that group either, though so Holland may sneak through).
Group D: Spain, Russia, Sweden and Greece.
So, if it lines up like that I expect it'll be
Quarter Finals:
Portugal v Germany with Portugal winning.
Croatia v Czech Republic with Croatia winning.
Italy v Russia with Italy winning.
France v Spain with France winning.
Semi Finals:
Portugal v Croatia with Portugal sneaking the win.
Italy v France with France avenging the world cup defeat.
France to win the final and Italy to come third, *if* it pans out like I think it will.
I might put a bet on Croatia though. Vastly under-rated team.
#3630045620305/17/2008 09:35:48Re:UEFA Euro 2008 - Official Thread
Croatia certainly did give England some problems. They got some solid players in there along with Kovac and Simic at the back, Modric and Kranjcar in MF, with Petric up front.
I still think they may struggle the whole tournament, I don't think they will topple Germany, but if they did they have a vastly easier Qf than a possible Portugal (Who I tip to win :p)

They'd be even more dangerous if Eduardo hadn't suffered that leg break. Still, Olic and Klasnic are strikers who are established in teams that maybe just aren't quite as good as your Barcelona's or Manchester Uniteds.
Portugals chances rest on how Veloso and Moutinho step up to the plate and whether Ronaldo can keep his form going throughout.

After Ronaldo's poor performances against Barca I think he will be feeling a little pressure.
On another note I recon Scotland will win the Celtic Cup this year Have England thought about joining it yet? or are they still adamant that they have better oportunities abroad with friendlies

Is that happening this year? I thought it was starting in 2 years time or something. All our Old Firm players will be knackered, lol.

What against tiny little countries who top league teams would barely make it into League 2? Its not complaining about they were the best team on the day but overally they are weak teams.

In fairness, there's not many easy to beat national teams left and you can't base a national teams quality on their national leagues standard. Even teams like Macedonia or Latvia have one or two individuals that play outside of the country and are World Class Players and that enables the country to build their side around them. Many of the so called smaller nations have plenty of players playing abroad, so they tend to be rather talented in some way shape or form because of the experience of playing football in a different culture, style and league.

Vieira will not play this year, problem with his leg, Flamini has been called to replace him. I've heard that Canavaro won't do it neither.
#3630046322906/03/2008 16:07:52Re:UEFA Euro 2008 - Official Thread
Flamini is a good replacement, I don't rate Vieira very highly anymore.
Cannavaro is out for a good 5 months or so at the very least so Italy called up Gamberini from Fiorentina.

I dunno about everyone else but I'm tired of hearing about Ronaldos move to Real Madrid. For starters it's a mistake if he were to move. Secondly, it's like the drama on these boards. Ok, it's interesting at first but then when it appears in almost every paper, article and news headline online and on TV it gets a little boring and annoying. I don't expect Ronaldo to leave United this year and for the sake of his career I hope he doesn't.

Yeah i agree and to be quite frank i couldn't care less what he does. but so far the transfer window has been very quiet so i guess there isn't much to talk about.

#3630046498306/07/2008 11:07:43Re:UEFA Euro 2008 - Official Thread
Group A - Switzerland 0-1 Czeck Republic
The match seemed cagey as what was expected by the two defensive teams. Czeck had the better of the chances in the first half, with Frei, captain of Switzerland limping of, crying at his misfortunes of an apparant injury. The second half opened well for Switzerland, but chance after chance, and several controversial hand ball decisions resulted in nothing, but a quick goal by Czeck Republic. Czeck held out to win their first match 1-0. The hosts had impressed, but ultimately poor finishing resulted in nothing for the hosts.
Prediction 0-1, Result 0-1.

England FT.... never mind. I have no interest in the tournament this year, the atmosphere is not the same. I think that English footballers will have a lot of training to do for the World cup.
#3630046504606/07/2008 13:42:07Re:UEFA Euro 2008 - Official Thread
Group A - Portugal 2-0 Turkey
The match went Portugal's way for most of it. However it came after three shots hit the bar, but after one hour of play, the 2004 finalists took the lead. Gaining even more control, the Portugues controlled the tempo, and in the dying seconds scored yet another to win the match 2-0.
Prediction 2-0, Result 2-0.

Look out for: Adrian Mutu's craft and guile. If there is anyone capable of breaching the French resistance then it is Romania's talisman.
Nah look out for Ribery or Benzema if you want to see great football. Not that I don't like Mutu, I just think Benzema is better, I have seen him play all year long and *CENSORED* he's great.
I think France will win 2-0, Viera and Henry are not playing so maybe it will be more difficult.
As for the other match, I will say a little win for Italy...
France 2 Romania 0
Netherlands 0 Italia 1
#3630046583306/09/2008 12:21Re:UEFA Euro 2008 - Official Thread
Man this group is gonna be hard ! Holland is allready winning 2-0 right now. I still think we can do something, we have the team for. We just have to improve our attack, maybe it will be better with Henry back. I haven't seen the match (*CENSORED* work!) but I was sure the attack was the problem and it seems that I'm right for once hehe Ribery and Benzema are good together but we need players better than Malouda and Toulalan.

Group A - Czech Republic 1-3 Portugal
Portugal took an early lead, with Czech following quickly at the 16 min. mark. The game remained at 1-1 until the second half gave a marginally better looking Portugal a 2-1 lead thanks to Ronaldo. The Czech's hunted the ball, but a stroke of brilliance at the end of the game gave Portugal a third to kill any chance of a comeback.

Group A - Switzerland 1-2 Turkey
The Swiss had taken the lead during a torrential downpour when a low cross slowed on the drenched pitch and allowed Hakan Yakin to tap in.
Yakin missed a glorious chance from the same spot minutes later and was punished when Semih Senturk headed in.
Arda Turan then broke Swiss hearts when he cut inside and scored with a shot which took a deflection.
Prediction 0-1, Result 1-2.

Group B - Croatia vs Germany
Germany and Croatia are both expected to progress from Group B so expect a tense and evenly contested match when they go head to head.
Look out for: Lukas Podolski's rise to prominance. The young German striker has had to play the second fiddle to Miroslav Klose in previous tournaments but expect to see him shine this summer.
Entertainment Rating 4/5 Prediction 0-2
19:45
Group B - Austria vs Poland
Perhaps not the most appealing match on paper but with one of the home nations facing an attacking Poland team, anything could happen.
Look out for: Maciej Zurawski's silky skills. The skillful striker will have a chance to shine tonight and Poland's captain and talisman might just be one of the stars of the tournament.

Group B - Croatia 2-1 Germany
The Croats got an impressive win over the favourites Germany in what was the first major upset of the tournament. Croatia had improved vastly over the last game they played, and Germany looked weak at the back. The win could mean a Portugal vs Germany quarter final.

Group C - Italy vs Romania
The World Champions will be favourites against Romania but with Adrian Mutu and Cristian Chivu both playing their trade in Serie A, Romania will know what to expect.
Look out for: Luca Toni. The Italian striker was his countries top scorer in the qualifying campaign and the Azzuri will be looking for him to provide the fire-power again.
Entertainment Rating: 3/5 Prediction 1-0

Group C - Holland vs France
Another clash of the giants in Group C and this one promises to be a fantastic spectacle. Both teams are reknowned for their creativity and flair, so there should be no shortage of attacking football on display.
Look out for: Henry vs Van Nistelrooy. Two of the most clinical goalscorers in world football go head to head. The result of the match might depend on whichever is able to take their chances.
