MxO World Clock

Get your Windows Vista MxO World Clock HERE.

My code and my server... it should be safe - virus scan it anyway.

Features:
  • Defalt timezone for the clock is MCT (PST : UTC-8) - Automatic Daylight Savings Time adjustments to all timezones.
  • Clock displays in your choice of Matrix Code or Normal numbers
  • Each instance of the clock can be named and set to a different timezone
  • Clock Name can be set to scroll (for long names)
  • Hover your mouse over the clock to see the date
  • Each clock can be set to either 12 or 24 hour time, with or without seconds displayed
Enjoy.

Please send me any suggestions or ideas you would like incorporated into the clock.

I was going to make it 1 Gadget with 3 clocks and the server status... but the server status is fake, so there's no point. Unless SOE can see fit to let me know how to get the server status (Closed, Open, Admin Only, etc...)

NOTE: to aquire the server status would require a valid log-in account and direct DB access. Which isn't going to happen due to security concerns.
Please devs, give us a server status raw text page.

If you have previously installed the above Gadget, please uninstall, re-download and reinstall it. I made some minor display bug fixes this morning and fixed a big bug in the installer.

Is there any way this will work on XP?

If not, can you make a version that will work with either Yahoo widgets?  Or Google widgets? (or both?)

Edit:  Ooo Ooo!!  Can you make a phlash version I can put on MxOSpace too?

Ok. So far we have requests for versions that run on:
  • MySpace (Flash or Java/DHTML)
  • Yahoo Widgets
  • OSX Dashboard
Fortunately it seems that the code only need slight tweaking with the biggest change being the system calls for getting timezones and saving settings.
Having never used or coded for Yahoo or OSX widgets, it may take me a bit to get the new versions up, as I'm pretty busy. I will need a tester for OSX as I don't have a mac running Tiger.

Make a folder called    MatrixClock.gadget

Put all the files in it, then just add it like normal as it will already be installed.
#36300438840 04/07/2008 17:35:46 Re:MxO Gadgets/Widgets for Windows Vista & others
To install a vista Gadget just run it.
The .gadget file is just a .zip file renamed.
if you run it windows will extract the file to the right location.
By default it will install in:

C:\Users\[USER_NAME]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\
MxOWorldClock.gadget

If you want to make it available to all accounts you need to move the MxOWorldClock.gadget folder to:

C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets

Then exit and re-start the sidebar to make it available immediately.

To uninstall a gadjet, open the "Add Gadgets" window from the Sidebar and right click the gadget to remove. On the pop-up menu select "Uninstall"

Before installing an updated version of a gadget, ALWAYS uninstall the previous version first.

Sorry folks... Between interviewing for a new job (and a $48k pay rise) and actual work I've not had the time to finish it.
It's not so much a conversion as a total re-write due to the difference in the way the Widgets work versus Gadjets.

One thing Vista got right... Gadgets are heaps easier to code than Widgets. Seriously... Widgets are needlessly complex. :/

#36300448999 04/30/2008 01:52:16 Re:MxO Gadgets/Widgets for Windows Vista & others
I'll check out google gadgets tonight.

The bonus with Vista Gadgets is that you can use various system resources easily... such as timezone and Daylight Savings Time offsets. Widgets require the zones to be hardcoded.

I have a large list of cities and their zone and DST offsets approved for use in the MxO world-clock by the compiler of the list (The same site that provided the data for the commonly used world-clock widget.)

All in all the widget is about 60% done... mostly it's interface issues. The back-end code is pretty straight forward.

any new updates with the google or yahoo widgets
#36300451513 05/06/2008 18:00:35 Re:MxO Gadgets/Widgets for Windows Vista & others
I commenced work on the google gadget about 20 minutes ago... It shouldn't take too much to port from Vista Sidebar due to the high levels of similarity between the two formats.

I'll get a text-only beta version up shortly and then I'll update it with the final version.

As with everything Mac (code-wise), the Yahoo Widgets are needlessly complicated. That one will take me a while (what with work, as always, kicking my behind... not to mention all these job interviews).

The flash version for inclusion on MxO space will be the last one to complete as I don't currently have flash installed and have no plans to buy it (the last version I had was Flash4)... if anyone suggests software piracy I will, as a coder who makes income from his programs, carve your heart out with a spoon.

Proof that this hasn't been abandoned... I have the clock working with font substitution and a few other bits of trickery...

ignore the other clock below it... that's just for correct time reference

Now all it needs is stuff that's mostly plug-in java I've already written.

Features:
  • Default timezone for the clock is MCT (PST) - Automatic Daylight Savings Time adjustments to all time zones
  • Clock displays in your choice of Matrix Code or Normal numbers
  • Each instance of the clock can be named and set to a different time zone
  • Clock Name is fixed and does not scroll in this version (unlike the Vista Gadgets version)
  • Hover your mouse over the clock to see the date
  • Clock is currently 12 hour display only in [hh:mm:ss a/p] format
Future releases of this will feature tidied and optimised code, 12/24 hour formats, and the option to scroll long clock names... if I ever get around to it SMILEY

I'm glad you're all liking it SMILEY

Small was one of my main concerns due to the abundance of comically huge clocks available... I wanted something that would aid productivity, not hog screen realestate. The Google version could be smaller but I decided to keep it the same size as the vista one, and the vista one is the minimum possible size.

And ... indeed it is:

Small. Green. Different. SMILEY

Love the Gadget. 9/10!
Works great so far.

What I'd love to see, that will never happen, is a gadget that let's you check the marketplace without logging in... but the code needed to do so would be very time consuming.

†Somnolence - CYPH† Blue is our best hope.
#36300465690 06/09/2008 07:34:24 Re:MxO Gadgets/Widgets for Vista SideBar, Google Sidebar, etc...

Without hacking the client you'd need collaboration from SOE (which would never happen due to their security concerns for the player's personal info held in the database) to make a gadget like that.

And you'd need a valid player account to actually check the marketplace... it's a task better suited to a full website rather than a gadget. That, and I can't readily conceive a situation that a gadget like that would be useful, that is within the TOS/EULA.

Far more useful would be these forums having an RSS feed that filters out invalid characters... the feeds from here are frequently unviewable due to faulty codes.

Having a server status report would be nice too... then I could make a gadget that showed server status, MegaCity Time and the DN1 RSS feeds.
