[Previous editions of the "Ask the devs" thread can be found in the Archive Construct.]

Hello, and welcome to the "Ask the devs an MXO question" thread. This is where you can ask a question relating to MXO, and have us respond with an answer of some sort. Ground rules:

1) Only the first question after the last dev/admin reply will be considered. This means that if I make a post, then Player1 makes a post with a question, and then Player2 makes a post with a question, only Player1's question will be answered. Player2's post might even be deleted to keep the thread clean (*makes mental note to remind self to beg Walrus for post-deleting power*). Player2 will have to try again later!

2) This also means that if Player1's post contains two questions, only the first question will be answered

3) Keep in mind that it is community/designer people we have here, so don't expect anything other than obviously made-up answers to highly technical programmy questions.

4) This is not a feature request thread! The answer to "why isn't [feature I really want] in the game" questions will be mostly along the lines of "because we couldn't/shouldn't/wouldn't do it," so you might not want to waste a question on things like that.

5) On the other hand, questions about quirky things currently in MXO are encouraged! Why is Ghost bald now? What does Walrus keep on the wall of his cubicle? The answers to these and other such questions could be yours.

6) We may not know the answer to a question, or we just may not be able to answer it for some reason. But we will, at least, say that we don't have the answer, which is sort of an answer, in a way.

7) Responses may not be timely, because we may hard at work on something, such as sleeping. Please have patience, and do not spam the thread.

8) We can't answer questions relating to future releases!

9) We can't answer questions relating to story spoilers.

10) Questions that have been edited are automatically disqualified!

11) We can't answer questions regarding specifics of SOE staff; we also can't answer questions that really belong to other SOE departments, such as Marketing or Customer Service, and this isn't the place to ask questions about exploits, player bans, hacks, etc.

Whatever I don't know I just make up, so it generally isn't an issue. I guess the stuff I don't know and can't make up is a) old event stuff, which I eh have mostly heard about second or third-hand, and b) player stuff, which I sort of take as I can get it.

Hmmm question (in case of some fluke of being after Rarebit)....

We have the High-Res copies of the Chapter 1 cinematics, do you think that we'll ever get High-Res copies of Chapters 2 - 4?

We do? Where/when did we get those? Hm this sounds vaguely familiar... Can you tell I'm not the right person to ask about this stuff? Uh... Anyway, I guess I would tend to doubt it.

I am still very new to MXO, but from the times I have spent playing, I am hooked. I just have two questions/concerns about the game.

1) Will the combat/targeting/movement ever get some love? As an advanced gamer, I find the controls to be somewhat slugish and the camera gets annoying at times when executing a special.

2) One of my favorite scenes in the movies is the freeway chase, any chance of something like that being added, specifically being able to ride a motorcycle or car?

Firstly i just want to say how much I still enjoy this game and the following questions has nothing to do with boredom of lack of things to do im just curious

Is it likely for us to see a big change in game like new martial arts, new clothes, new districts or new levels?

I'm comfortable with the way things are going i just want to know if i should expect anything big or not.

P.S not looking for spoilers or anything but kinda like a heads up thing.

hmm when NT asked about the clothing an old idea i had sprung to mind again,

you know how the codelauncher tool on vector over writes the eye and glove slot, would that be possible to do for any clothing? like having plain black slack tool? i know it wont happen cus then you guys need to convert all the existing cloths to tools but hey just a thought, heres a pic to show what i mean.

Umm Rarebit why would you /ccr something that has to do with a bug in the server?  Don't you mean you have to have people send /bug reports in?  I thought CCR's only deal with in game behavior and/or issues with characters.

For future answering:

Will the dev team ever take personal storylines from players (other than LESIG) and incorporate them into the main storyline or at least to where the player's storyline is viewed as canon by main characters (the devs that are playing them)?  I know this has happened in the past, on a faction level.  A machine critical mission mentions my old faction, Archimedes Lever, for an example of what Im talking about here....anyway something like will ever be done on a personal level?

It's less likely...in fact pretty unlikely, because something like that we need to own--intellectual property rights, I mean. Faction and player names we already own, since those are registered through our system, but player stories I don't think we do, and there'd probably be some legalese in making that happen that I don't really care to get involved in, not to mention potential conflicts with the main storyline. Anything you manage to work in to say a Live Event with a story character is free game, but that's about as far as we'd go, I think.


Hmmm...yeah, that makes sense.  Still...seems that maybe if you guys (Devs) ran into a personal storyline that you found interesting or thought dovetailed well and wanted to use it.  Maybe, the author could sign a waiver to have their story become MxO "canon".....therefore, allowing SOE to have access to dovetail and make some interesting things happen.

I think this idea might help revitalize MxO from a RP perspective and make players feel more involved...*shrugs* I know I would jack in more if this happened and I know alot of players were unhappy, as early as the first few months after release, when we realized that we wouldnt be able to "influence" the storyline in MxO (initially, we were told by Monolith that this was possible thru the Live Event Team).  This idea, I think, would be a happy medium, since I know you guys (Devs) dont have the resources to do it properly....but this seems fairly easy (to just have a person sign a waiver, like LESIG).

I've only changed the Uriah Chopper Keys so far, and the XP exchange is handled by a new collector there. I wouldn't say that the basic "farm these to exchange for this special item" idea behind the gang tokens and collectors has really changed, it's just that you can now cash them in (the Chopper Keys, anyway) if you want, instead of trading for the collector's item.
