It takes a while but little by little we'll claw our way to the top. I think we can get into the top 200 or so eventually.

I just replaced the hardrive in my PS3 so along with that I loast the folding@home application and redownloaded it and rejoined the MxO team, however im back down to 0 workunits, I checked and it and I still have my certificate for 24,000 points so im assumeing it will keep counting up on my previous imaximus name. Do you think Its gonna start all over and maybe make 2 imaximus's on the MxO team?

The folding@home application only counts the number of WUs that it has completed. So whenever the application is reinstalled, it restarts from 0. I had the same situation and further WUs were added to my previous count without any problems. As long as the user name is the same, it will continue to add to your existing count.

PS3 network enters record books
A project that harnesses the spare processing power of Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) to help understand the cause of diseases has entered the record books.

Guinness World Records has recognised folding@home (FAH) as the world's most powerful distributed computing network.

FAH has signed up nearly 700,000 PS3s to examine how the shape of proteins affect diseases such as Alzheimer's.

The network has more than one petaflop of computing power - the equivalent of 1,000 trillion calculations per second.

"To have folding@home recognized by Guinness World Records as the most powerful distributed computing network ever is a reflection of the extraordinary worldwide participation by gamers and consumers around the world and for that we are very grateful," said Professor Vijay Pande of Stanford University and a leader of the FAH project.

Disease link

Distributed computing is a method for solving large complex problems by dividing them between many computers.

They harness the idle processing power of computers to crunch small packets of data, which are then fed back over the internet to a central computer.

The technique has been used by several groups to study everything from how malaria spreads to searching for new cancer drugs.

One of the most high profile projects is seti@home, which uses computer cycles to search through thousands of hours of radio telescope signals for signs of extra-terrestrial intelligence.

FAH uses distributed computing to examine protein folding and how it maybe linked to diseases.

Proteins that do not fold correctly have been implicated in diseases such as Alzheimer's, Huntingdon's, BSE and many cancers.

Speed test

Until March this year, FAH only ran on PCs.

The program had around 200,000 computers participating in the program, the equivalent of about 250 teraflops (trillion calculations per second).

The addition of 670,000 PS3s has taken the computing power of the network to more than one petaflop.

By comparison BlueGene L, which tops the list of most powerful supercomputers, has a top speed of just 280.6 teraflops.

The boost is in part because of the PS3's powerful processor, known as the "cell", which runs up to 10 times faster than current PC chips.

"It is clear that none of this would be even remotely possible without the power of PS3, it has increased our research capabilities by leaps and bounds," said Prof Pande.

#36300389304 01/18/2008 09:59:30 Re:Folding@home
Why are there so few people doing this now?  It cant be due to boredom cause you dont have to do anything other than start the app?

Heyyy we're up to 452 of 98502.

#36300389401 01/18/2008 13:00:41 Re:Folding@home
Actually, we've been sitting in the mid 400s for weeks now. I'm a little disappointed, but hey, we made it so far, we must be awesome.
#36300389412 01/18/2008 13:05:21 Re:Folding@home
Yeah, we've been chilling around 450 for a long time. We lost Raijinn and Stryker isnt producing as he used to, so that's hurt us a bit. I need to get it running again, I had it going for awhile pretty good but haven't started a new one for a bit.
#36300389437 01/18/2008 13:17:49 Re:Folding@home
i pretty much stopped when rajjin left.   I know for a fact i folded more then anyone that month but i didn't get folder of the month cuz he left.....   I cried then i stopped  lol  =P

I only do this when i forget to turn off my PS3. I would defo do it if it could be done while playing a game. I don't like doing it while on mxo incase in plays with my bandwidth SMILEY

Downloaded for computer tonight, so I've joined the effort and joined MxO team.

EDIT: Odd that my name hasn't shown up yet on the MxO team list.

Until you complete and post your first protein you won't appear.

After you submit your first one, it will appear on the next update.. The updates happen at 12 3 6 9 and so forth.

Welcome to the team.

My PS3 overheated again.. Has anyone had any luck with cooling these things?
I have tried the intercooler.  Its ok to burn up a $35 intercooler but my PS3 is another matter,

not sure i hear the 40 gig one doesnt heat up as much i wonder if any other people with the 40 gig can say this is true due to the fact they use the use the new 65nm chip compared to the 96 or what ever the size over the 60 gig is
#36300470241 06/23/2008 10:36:40 Re:Folding@home
Has anyone else had to fold a 2500 frame core? I got that this morning and it's estimating it to take 52 days to complete.

I thought that was the reason behind so many people, to not allow such big cores...but oh well..

I just bought a new desktop, so when i get home tonight I'll restart my folding contribution.

I'm up to 16 units...this thing uses alot of power..hehe. It's a good cause maybe a random thread once in a while in general or world forums would get some attention from players that don't hop into off topic?

Good job Woken  Yeah its a huge power hog.. I had to move my PS3 out to another room..

#36300471672 06/26/2008 19:35:58 Re:Folding@home

I'm just 2 boxing it while i play mxo and wow..lol...

I don't own a ps3..360 all the way ;p

#36300474782 07/04/2008 14:48:35 Re:Folding@home

Someone told me I can get this running on my 360?

true?if so please tell me how..thank you.

#36300474787 07/04/2008 15:19:24 Re:Folding@home

Not yet, Peter Moore of Microsoft is "considering it", but then he turned it all into a PR thing for Micrsoft which has needless to say got on a lot of peoples nerves as Folding @ Home is for such a good cause and no one cares how many more people he can get to do it on the 360 than people on the PS3 ¬_¬

He should be encouraging everyone SMILEY

Bump for being a very good cause...

Come on people I see alot of names that still read these forums that aren't using the program lately.

Curing diseases is not something to do just when it's cool or new...start using it again ya bums ;p

#36300478046 07/13/2008 23:19:23 Re:Folding@home
I do it when I can, but I dont want to over heat the poor PS3, my 360 has been dead since Christmas (yes, very lucky I know) so I don't want to lose the PS3 so close to the release of The Force Unleashed!
#36300478074 07/14/2008 02:59:24 Re:Folding@home

Think i'v only done about 7 or 8 units so far. Rarely go on Folding unless i leave my PS3 on the main screen and it goes onto it after 15 mins.

Some of the units are not so bad to do, 4 - 8 hours but i'v had one thats bn just over a day and another that was 2 days long SMILEY
