Folding@home is an application that was put out on March 22, 2007 for the PS3 in its 1.60 update, as well as being available on for Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX operating systems. Its a program that when running, connects the Computer or PS3 to the Stanford University's (Pande Group) network and then uses the computing power to simulate the folding of proteins along with other molecular dynamics simulations. (Wiki link). There is also a leaderboard within it, where teams of people fold to being the number one contributing team. A link to download Folding@Home for Windows, Linux, or Mac OSX can be found here.

Rarebit has started Team MxO (56853), which is nearing the 450th position.

I just got a phone call from the courier guy that my PS3 is coming today! So I'll be one of the first people to have it in Spain (non importated, at least) SMILEY I'll (try to) join rarebit's mxo team so we can together fold the rules of the... proteins!

Yeah, my electric bill's gonna be pretty hefty if I keep this up... But I should have a couple proteins folded today! Whatever that means! Woo! Then maybe I'll fold some shirts!

We should also start an MXO shirt-folding team! For home tidyness!

When a team gets in the top 2000, there is a 3rd party webpage with nice statistics:

http://folding.extremeoverclocking....m/team_list.php

After the anouncement in the looking glass, I think we will gather some more computer and PS3, so we can enter that page!

And yeah, a title for the most productive folders will be great :p

Yes the PS3 has it specific version, which is optimized for the CELL processor. Due to the power of the PS3, and algorithms designed specifically, it takes about 8 hour to finish a Work Unit, while on PC it can last few days. I think they don't have all the algorithms ported for the PS3, only those that can be run more effectively by its processor.

It's great that Raijinn announced this thread in the looking glass! After 2 months of MXO folding, this announcement will give us a fresh injection of new folders SMILEY *claps raijinn*

Nice work everyone, we're getting close to that 2k mark that gets us on the official top team list!

I think I'm going to make a title that I'll give out to the top folder of the month and they'll have that title just for that month..

What about another rank for those that get a fixed number of WU? Like the "Folder" title when you sumbit say 100 work units :p

Wow, this is pretty cool stuff. Does anyone have any idea why this wasn't done for the Xbox360? Considering it's superior popularity, it would seem logical.

More units sold it's not the same as more popular SMILEY the xbox is cheaper and has been out longer.

There have been rumors of the xbox going to another similar project. But if they do that, everybody will check the numbers and see that the ps3 is objectively more powerfull that the xbox. Micro$oft won't enter a competition they can't win. Probably they might enter a very different project where comparision is not that easy.

And yay! I think we will get to the top 2k in a day or two! Congratulations everyone!

From 2000 to 1500 in what? 10 days? Impresive. I feel proud of the community.

Our next milestone is top800, since extremeoverclocking gives individual statistic for only top800 teams! Once we reach that place, we will have similar statistics for users (i.e, production estimates, projected overtackes and so). The 800th team has 727k points, a bit more than twice our points; so it will take a while but we will get there!

Strykre01 is doing a very good job!  I guess he'll be the next month's folder.

ow, it was nice to be on rare's back for almost 3 months, but oh well :p I'll miss having a rank, there is no way I can get another anytime in the future SMILEY

I found the link to include team statistics in the signature. When we reach top800 it will display user info as well:

Any news on the 360 version?

No 360 version is available, the creators mentioned that the 360 doesn't have enough processing power to be of use.
I don't think this is really true. A project like this would benefit from any help, even crappy computers can contribute, just slower. But Micro$oft won't enter in the same donating project so people could compare directly both machines; bad advertisement for them. Just like it's a good advertisement for the PS3 the rumor that the 360 is not powerful enough SMILEY

My PS3 does this from time to time.. Shutting it off then letting it complete its next WU corrected it for me.. I had a really great day where 9 WU happened at once from this.

If it is a PC there are some FAH command line arguments

try fah /?  i think it spells it out for you.. if not post again and I will do some more digging..

I just finished a WU and it didn't count it either. And since I'm on a computer, that was around 48 hours of work. SMILEY

#36300328914 09/25/2007 21:09:13 Re:Folding@home

it doesnt post the work unit until the next update which is every 3 hours.. then the site takes about 45 min to process so it shows status processing..

If after 4 hours u dont see credit we should get concerned.

Once you have an internet connection setup on the PS3, just go to the network tab and look below the PLAYSTATIONStore icon. You'll probably have to install and download an update but from there on you just need to pick a name by going Triangle->Identity->Change Donor Name. Once you have a name go Triangle->Identity->Join an Existing Team and to join Team MxO put in the code 56853, or any other team's code that you wish to join. As far as I know you can only be in one team.

I'm obviously joining MxO, and I plan to leave it on during my work hours only though. Dunno how the folding thing works, but I'm sure I'll figure it out. Thanks Fray.

For actual folding you just leave the console running the program and it will begin on its own, you can then watch and enjoy the pretty visuals and tweaks you can make to it.
