Director Abrams to resurrect "Star Trek"

Mon Feb 26, 4:43 AM ET

AP WIRE

The Starship Enterprise finally has a new captain.

After months of speculation, "Mission: Impossible III" director J.J. Abrams has signed on to shoot the next installment of the "Star Trek" feature franchise, sources said late Friday.

"Star Trek XI" revolves around a young James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, chronicling their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first space mission. The previous film in the series, the 2002 box office bomb, "Star Trek: Nemesis," was directed by Stuart Baird, and starred Patrick Stewart.

Abrams, the prolific co-creator/executive producer of "Lost" and director of last year's "M:I III," has been developing the project through his Paramount-based Bad Robot shingle as a producer and writer.

But Abrams did not commit to directing the project until Friday evening, when the deal was finalized, sources said.

To hell with the enterprise, do a movie about voyager, or deep space 9 for pete's sake or use the movie as a launching board for a new chapter of the franchise.

But Voyager is over, DS9 I didnt watch that much but didnt the Captain die or something in the end? Plus it was to relationshipy which suxed.

I think maybe a new ship with a deep space exploration focus or something would pwn.

#36300174736 02/26/2007 08:35:37 Re:Here Comes the Next Star Trek Movie..
Anyone here read the Star Trek: Titan books?

Now there's a movie i'd like to see.  The cast would have a couple people from TNG, mostly just Riker and Troi.  I know, I know they're getting older and (as seen when Johnathan Frakes talked about Trek in "How William Shatner Changed the World"SMILEY.  But, the other characters, new species on the Titan (some of them would -have- to be CGI-based) really add a lot to the Star Trek universe.

Plus have you seen the USS Titan? It was designed by a fan who won the contest.

"The USS Titan (NCC-80102) is a Luna-class starship*, designed primarily for scientific discovery. Described as 450 metres long, the Titan was built with state-of-the-art science facilities as opposed to being a more tactically pronounced starship. With a complement of approximately 350 persons, the USS Titan comprises the most racially diverse crew in Starfleet, with less than 15% of the population being human, as well as a number of non-humanoid beings."

Now that's a Starship worthy of a movie.

I mean, I'm a pretty big Trekkie and all, and I respect the Original Series, but a prequel was not the direction Star Trek should be going.  "To boldly go when noone has gone before."  With this new idea, we're just going back.  Granted, going back is what they did with Enterprise, but Gene Roddenberry's been dead for around 16 years now.  He never lived to help work on DS9, Voyager, nor Enterprise.  I personally liked Enterprise, they'd just gotten fresh writers and were really turning the story around when they got cancelled.

Yikes, this has turned into a personal rant.  Basically, if you haven't read the ST: Titan books go out and get them, they're fantastic.  Being a Trekkie I will go and see the new movie opening night.  Abrams better not screw this up, it's my main Star Trek fix until ST:Online beta starts.

#36300174740 02/26/2007 08:44:49 Re:Here Comes the Next Star Trek Movie..
yeah i wish i could read those *CENSORED* books, but yeah europe sucks, i havent seen em over here.
and since the Titan continues where Star Trek Nemesis ends: Riker and Troi promoted to the Titan.

but you'd think they would make a movie based after Star Trek Nemesis, which they dont coz they have Star Trek Online.

according to Wikipedia:
The game is to be set in the early years of the 25th Century (just beyond the eras of TNG, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager), approximately twenty years after Star Trek Nemesis(the latest movie). Missions will include storylines that involve established characters from the Star Trek franchise. Players will begin at Starfleet Academy where they will learn basic game skills, before progressing to Starship assignments. Players will be able to live in crew quarters on ships, on planets, or on starbases.

so a movie couldnt fit between or after that imo

Couldn't fit a movie in the 20-year gap between Nemesis and STO?  I think they could, there's wiggle-room for a whole series in that.  I mean, Voyager was only gone 7 years, and that worked pretty well SMILEY

And have you tried ordering them from Amazon?

yeah but you know how cheap they can be with bringing back old casts SMILEY
but the main thing is that all the hostilities have been seized, peace with the romulans, the klingons, the borg crippled (by voyager) etc, new plot for ST Online SMILEY

and yeah ill take a look on amazon =\

#36300174767 02/26/2007 09:39:32 Re:Here Comes the Next Star Trek Movie..
In my humble opinion only TNG and VOY hold any decent water. TNG because it was just so well done and VOY because it in many ways it kept the TNG spirt while at the same time really opening interesting questions. Not to mention it had the borg in it more than any other show which is always a plus.

I'm not the biggest Star Trek fan but they should follow suit like all the other rehashes and start a new chapter. Maybe 100 years in the future or something. Or perhaps show how it all started. First trip into space and what not. First meeting with aliens. I dunno....then again....I'm not the biggest Star Trek fan. SMILEY

/agree

And this new Trek movie will suck big fat smelly slimey cow utters. I hate the idea of it, and theres absoultly no way it can be pulled off so that both trekies and your average movie goers will like it. Both groups will think its *CENSORED*.

I had the impression that Nemises would be the last movie.
#36300174878 02/26/2007 12:52:18 Re:Here Comes the Next Star Trek Movie..

It is, for the TNG series  SMILEY    Nemisis wasnt bad, the only thing that ruined it for me was the fact that those alien things were SO over the top. Other than that it was pretty cool.

Now Insurection... that one sucked  lol.

1st Contact & Wrath of Kaun Ftw!!!            Generations is always a fun movie as well.   Kirk and Picard fighting side by side get cooler everytime I watch it.

Y'know what saved Insurrection?

This:

Yeah, the Captain's Yacht.  People had been wanting to see that thing fly since TNG. Watching it fly away from the Enterprise-E was the best scene in the movie. SMILEY

Here's my top 3 since people are talking about them:

1. First Contact
2. Generations (it was......fun...)
3. Wrath of Khan
4. Undiscovered Country
and because y'know it was coming
5. IV: The Voyage Home (Vere are the Nuclear Wessels?)

#36300174935 02/26/2007 14:22:37 Re:Here Comes the Next Star Trek Movie..

A Kirk and Spock prequel would mean the absence of Nimoy and Shatner.  Fission Mailed.

I'd prefer a retcon/ do over of Nemesis. "Search for Data", or just Q saying "It never happened".

It being said wasnt as funny as the cops expression and the sheer humor you have to get with thinking whats going threw the cops head as he's hearing a man in a russian accent asking where the nuclear vessels are.
#36300179463 03/04/2007 05:47:30 Re:Here Comes the Next Star Trek Movie..
First Contact and Nemesis FTW.

I'm a fan of the Voyager and TNG series. But I think they should just let it go, soon they will drain Star Trek dry and No-one will like it anymore. Nemesis was awesome and left a nice open storyline to continue with, people will find out what happened to B4 when the MMO comes out, at least I hope so.

As for the game, they better have "7 of 9" in them, something to keep the 14 yo's happy SMILEY
#36300179514 03/04/2007 06:58:05 Re:Here Comes the Next Star Trek Movie..
I believe DS9 had the most single best storyline Arc to it out of all of the others, the only problem with making a film of it is the fact that it's a static area (they're not gonna move it even tho' they can) and No Sisko didn't die. Voyager is back from the Delta with all of its crew presumably all promoted to Admiral (j/k). TNG has always got the sameish plots from the TV series and I feel, as much as I'd hate to admit it, it has run it's course (Even Data looked like he was in his 40's) A new ship would, be better but again, the plots would have to be somewhat different to TNG's. What they need is a fresh idea. I like the idea of a Starfleet academy based film but not with old characters or new versions of the old characters (I've heard that they are considering Matt Damon as a possible Kirk!!!) unless they are teaching or special guest teachers. Maybe something with the energy of Starship troopers but not with the comedy violence
#36300179601 03/04/2007 08:57:17 Re:Here Comes the Next Star Trek Movie..
Nemisis had a good idea but was poorly executed in my opinion. The very end was pathetic and I believe the writer admited it was like a modern search for spock remake.

~~~~~~~~~SPOILERS TO WHAT THE NEW ENTERPRISE LOOKS LIKE~~~~~~~~~
It looks like a cross between the 1701, the 1701-A, and a '57 Chevy (the ramscoops and nacelles in particular).
The saucer looks like it was taken straight out of the original films too.
Overall, I like the way it looks.  This makes me even more excited for opening night.  I'm going to see Quantum of Solace Friday or Saturday night, mostly for the trailer though.  Still need to see Casino Royale... >.>
#36300519608 11/12/2008 11:19:56 Re:Here Comes the Next Star Trek Movie..
They moved the 'neck' back the pushed the deflector out a bit further and made the nacelles all bulgy. While I can get used to the whole thing I really hate the chrome ramscoops.
SPOILERS AHEAHD
Trailer Description from IGN.
The Trailer
The trailer kicks off with a sports car being driven at high speed down a dirt road, chased by what appears to be a motorcycle. The car careers towards a cliff face and the driver bails just as it is about to go over the edge, revealing himself to be a child. The biker dismounts his now hovering cycle and appears to be not of this Earth. "What's your name?" he barks. "James Tiberius Kirk," comes the reply.
Cut to grown-up Kirk looking mean and moody as a voiceover talks about his being meant for something better, something special. This is quickly followed by a variety of shots of Spock -- young/older/Nimoy -- before segueing into a variety of stock trailer shots. So cue quick-cut space battles, shouting, explosions, phasers being fired, some brief sex and a quip from Scotty: "I like this ship; it's exciting!"
The trailer then ends with Eric Bana, heavily made up as Romulum Nero, exclaiming, "The wait is over!"
Well, it doesn't look half bad. As long as Spock keeps on saying "facinating", McCoy "He's dead, Jim" and it has Scotty-Kirk repair discussions, everything's going to be fine.
Btw, a typical Scotty-Kirk repair discussion run that way:
Kirk: Scotty, how long will it take to fix it?
Scotty: 30 hours, captain.
Kirk: You have 20.
Scotty: Ok, I'll do it in 10.
I realize this is an old post but I had to correct you because im such an *censord* trekkie and it bothered me. Riker does not eventually command the enterprise, he eventually commands the Titan, a brand new Prometheus class ship.
As for the new trailer....  my opinions are still /meh. It still feels like Abrams is slowly killing a helpless old man that just wants tobe left alone by trying to dress him up in abercrombie&finch clothes and jamming an ipod down his throat.
And I'm going to have to out-trekkie you this once imax.  The USS Titan is actually a Luna class starship, not a Prometheus class.  I have all the Titan books >.>
I'm still cautiously optimistic about the movie (just watched the bootleg in previous page), I'm glad they kept the same Red Alert sound used before in TNG and afterwards.
I have to admit I have never liked Star Trek but after having like 2 pilsner glasses full of gin and tonic given the fact that they were firesaling alcohol with the closing and a few jager shots I found the entire thing serene.
Im looking forward to this movie if nothing else to see something new tried with the series. Im sick of Star Wars rehashes and Trek always seemed a little more intelectual.
