The reasons people play online games are as diverse as the people themselves. Some play as a hobby, some do it for community, some do it to stay in touch with friends and family members that live far away.

What are your reasons for playing? What keeps you coming back? Why do you choose the games and avatars you do? The Community Relations Management Team at SOE is collecting player stories today, January 4, 2007. Take a few minutes and tell us yours!

I play MxO because I wanted to immerse myself in the world of the Matrix.  I came here looking to socialize with people who also enjoyed the movies and discovered a fantastic community with a great competitive spirit.

I don't want to be Neo.  I just want to walk my own path in a world where anything is possible.

#36300132939 01/04/2007 11:57:41 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2006

It's the most unique MMO every created and not another drone.  If the bigshots in SOE would sit down and see the potential that this game truely has or the potential of creating an expansion and provide the current "small" development team with more employees... the sky is the limit.

Many players easily relate to the game because the setting is based on a modern city etc...

It's just unique in one of those "only the good die young" ways.

I choose to play the Matrix Online, for many reasons,

The community itself is probably the best one i have ever known and im proud to be apart of it, admited there are a few *twits* but we all /ignore them.

My main reason for playing is the story. I needed more Matrix, i wanted to know what happened to Neo, that shining light when he was carried away was making me crazy. Now ive experienced some of the story i do not want to miss it, so il never leave not untill the game ends, which it wont ((I hope))

The Matrix its another world, and i take that chance to escape real life and be in another world where i can be who and whatever i want. most importantly MYSELF!

Also, my friends. The ones ive made, People like Veos, Aliagha and many from my faction who have stuck by me through thick and thin. Some like Veos who has been there in RL and there best friend i can have!!

theres probably more reasons why i play MxO but i cant think at the moment, so il add them later if i do.

The Matrix Online: It's the best of times. It's the worst of times.

We'll not focus on the worst of times. They're not worth focusing on. The best of times are. The Matrix Online is, first and foremost, the Matrix. I play for that reason. As long as the story of the Matrix continues, then nearly nothing will make me quit. I don't want to play WoW or Everquest 2, the premise of normal MMOs is something that repels me from the Online world. MxO, for all its flaws, invited me in and I guess you could say the buggers have locked the door on me.

Furthermore, the Community has me stuck here. I know there are definitely cries of elitism and favouritism, but that'll be there in every other game. Different as MxO is, the people playing are, at the end of the day, are people. I, however, like to think I've found the cream of the crop in the people that are in my faction and that I've met on other servers during my time. Even during the game's darkest moments, those people have given me hope and kept me going, and I'm pretty dammed happy to know them. Most of them are more than gaming buddies now, they're friends.

So that's MxO to me. 'Av it. SMILEY

It's a fun and easy way to interact with new people anytime anywhere.

After trialling almost every other popular MMO, I decided I like this one the best. Usually a great community, I like the concepts of live events, some player events are great and the combat system is the best I've seen, especially in CR2.
#36300132955 01/04/2007 12:25:17 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2006

I was never into MMO's, in-fact up until June 2005 I had never ever played a MMO, I always felt limited in how a game online could play. However back when Matrix Online was first spoken about it sparked my interest. I was always a big fan of the movies and interested with the world the Matrix movies existed in and the characters they had. Therefore being able to play a game where you could become part of that world was a strong force in moving into the MMO genre.

So I started playing Matrix Online because of my fascination with the Matrix universe as well as a good friend being in the game already. Thus began my time in the game. My reasons for playing have not changed; I still love this universe we exist in MxO, however many other reasons now reflect on top of that.

The community and the people around me (faction + friends) is a major reason, if you don't enjoy the time that's spent in any aspect in-game with others then you will quickly start to dislike things in-game, therefore those people truly make me play as often as I can.

The in-game world and the RP element in a world where you play a human is a great thing for this game, that keeps me involved with the storyline and various other things in-game, as much as the appeal other games might have but this universe has best options and limitless lines to progress your character.

The outside interaction this community has is also another big factor, looking through the forums you can see the flow of ideas as well as designs and movies from many players, these things keep us interested and give people the drive to work on and improve on things themselves.

The Matrix was groundbreaking and the game certainly tried to do that with a few things, I will be here with hope that we will be getting more things and other options in this game to truly take it where it should be, that being one of the best MMO's out there.

My first MMO and well worth the experience and time I have devoted to it.

#36300132960 01/04/2007 12:44:59 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2006

Its going to sound bad... but originally i joined MXO because i'm a gamer and a HUGE fan of The Matrix.

But as time went on I noticed my character is everything I either want to be or everything i'm not. Example, my character looks cool, has style, rich, lots of friends and is not afraid to speakup or take action. (I also try to help others whenever I can, RL doesn't give me enough chances). Whereas in RL i'm shy got no friends, i dont speak my mind (i got alot of money for my age but not a millionaire) and i definitely dont have style.

Ive also been using MMO's as an escape from Real life. I'm 18 and i dont stop running around til like 9pm each day. Work, parents who dont want to listen to me, schooling and so much more actually gave me an ulcer. Gaming is the only thing I have in my life to unwind.

#36300132962 01/04/2007 12:46:58 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2006
Well, generally, I see the video games industry, especially the design aspect, as a rapidly emerging art form. Expressions, knowledge, wisdom can all be channeled through video games. And all the more when one chooses to play a game that allows for a massive collective of like-minded people who wish to have some fun and to discover another world, of sorts. On a level, I play games because they resemble books and paintings at times. On the next level, I play games because there is a type of interactivity that is unattainable any where else.

Therefore, the aspect of a massive multiplayer game based on the future of the Matrix grabbed me. The franchise had already captivated me with its story, its unique visions, and maddeningly stylish cinematography. The Matrix presented an ideal: that anything is possible. That everything is a simulation. The Matrix Online became my first, and only, purchase of a massive multiplayer game to this day.

I play as my character, Sykin, with devotion because I believe the game and what it represents warrants me to try more than what a normal and typical massive multiplayer game would ever stir into my conscious. The community surrounding this game especially is what enables me to enjoy it no matter the random glitch or near-fatal mistake. And the work and craftsmanship that go into every facet of the game from individuals such as Rarebit and Paul Chadwick make me want to enjoy it.

I have never seen so much gathered creativity when looking at what makes the Matrix Online as a whole. Somehow, we are all contributors to its legacy, and that is the most supreme experience.

It has never been a matter of "Oh, I am bored and have nothing to do, let's play the Matrix Online." Instead, gratifyingly, it has always been: "What awaits me inside the Matrix?"
#36300132968 01/04/2007 12:55:21 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2006

What attracted me to MxO in the first place? The story. I read in an arcticle that it would be advancing the story after the movies and immersing us(the players) into the story making us feel a part of it. This appealed to me big time, until july 05 i had only played Final Fantasy XI and a couple of other smaller mmo's. These just didn't tickle my fancy, however i finally got a PC good enough to play mxo with and i was hooked immediately. My crew that i was recruited to helped me immensly and that is, for the most part, why i continue to play today - the community and the story. The storyline has progressed at a steady pace but i've never really lost intrest in it even through out the "pew pew" storyline. The community good and bad is great, a vast majority of my RL friends have gone to uni this year so i've been left behind in my home town doing college work, meaning that i've had more spare time and without some of the people i met this past 6-8 months, vector/syntax and recursion alike(you know who you are =p ) life would have been a lot more boring. I love the combat system i have a good understanding of it and it's always worth playing a game with targets and available rewards for winning events and representing your org well.

As far as my characters concerned - i love spiked red hair on a lot of characters, video games and cartoons alike, so i decided to go with spiked red hair. My avatar is a character from a cartoon(with read hair) and is very skilled in guns - so you can see the similarities there =). My signatures are often spur of the moment i'll come up with an idea or i'll be captivated by a specific scene/feel/screen/video and i'll want to make a sig out of it or similar to it.

My characters personality is styled as similar to myself - full of love, but sometimes doesn't show it, he can be outspoken and controversial but tries to restrain himself from doing so for the better. He can be cold and frank, realistic at times but is generally optomistic. I see my character as an out where i can often speak my mind where as IRL i restrain alot from doing so.

#36300132970 01/04/2007 12:55:48 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2006

I being a huge Matrix fan jumped at the chance to be apart of the beta testing for this new MMO.

I had never heard of a MMO, didn't know what that was or what exactly BETA testing was rofl. I couldn't even figure out how to do a mission for the first four days. But It was exciting to see this massive landscape inside a videogame.. How did they do that? Was my first thought. Seeing the characters we have come to love in the movie face to face was exiciting. I think I actually had my heartbeating so fast when I got my first Live Character tell that I started to sweat. That tell was from Morpheus. You would've thought I was watching 24 or something.

Once I figured out the game mechanice and got my faction off the ground I truely  realized what a MMO was. The real time playing and great people I was meeting all over the world. Missions were very cool and semi interactive and the storyline was fresh to us.. I wanted to know so badly what happened to Neo and what the machines were up to.

I started playing a zionist because I believed in the goals that Morpheus and Trinity all followed. And as a fan of those films to interact with the one and only Morpheus really is a unqiue take on a video game.  Not only that it really makes you feel apart of the Matrix Trilogy, like somehow perhaps your RSI (Residual Self) had something to offer these Heros of the game. You could actually make a difference. A feeling of "Wow I matter in this MMO"

The End of Beta was a thrilling introduction to what this game can offer and man I did not sleep for 16 hours that day. Nothing like what I saw, agents attacking, the sky falling, Characters from the Movie contacting you to help them fight etc. My adreneline was so high I couldn't eat or do anything.. It was that exciting.

Things have changed slightly since then but I still believe there is hope. I know the wonderful feeling that this video game can give you, the excitment and realism that you cannot get in ANY OTHER GAME.

I have tried some other MMOS and was so detatched from their enviorment that I was so grateful to have Matrix Online to go back to. The Realistic backgrounds, incredible fighting and PVP, player interaction, it really is a groundbreaking MMO.

I will be one of those players who will be around till the plug is pulled, whenever that day may come. Hopefully never.

All in all not much of a story but rather a insight to a long time MXO player and why they love this game.

Here's to a great 2007

-Jack in The Matrix Has you.

Midnight

Thanks for the Memories MXO!

I play online games for the fun factor I have during my time with it and the overall social aspect of the communities. You get to meet some interesting folks over the years and differant games, but we all have one thing in common, we love our video games.

I am a big fan of the Mortal Kombat games and when the MK series started up I was in love (MKII ftw). I also loved the FPS shooters. So a game like MxO where it had your fighting and gunplay made sense to me. I liked the story of the matrix movie (the first one) and watched the next set of movies which got me hooked. After watching the In your hands video I was interested in trying out the Beta of the game.

When creating my persona online, I of course chosen my favorite MK character in sub-zero (Ninjas are cool) and in thinking of a name I remembered the historic story of the Unsinkable Titanic which obviously...sunk from an iceberg. To put it bluntly, im very competitive and the name just fit me. A object that does the impossible.

Having intrest in games, I was thrilled to be part of the beta project for this game. To have the oppertunity to help shape this game and partake in some of the events (GM fights and end of beta) have left its mark in my memory.

Well we can tell you how our story began....

i was hanging out with my wife (CrystalKn1ght for those who dont know) and my brother (Ic3b3rg)came to me and her and was talking to us about beta testing the matrix online. well we watched him play it for a few days and it really got into our system and made us want to try it ourselves, so we went online and prepurched a copy for each of us and entered into the beta testing phase of the game.  we experienced quite a bit in the few months we were playing and the betapocolyse will never be forgotten by either of us(being meatwatted FTW). then we went ahead and did as much as could in the live game making friends and keeping up with the story, but most of all trying to give to the community as much as they have given to us. we have been in a few factions and even started one ourselves and we constatly try to help others and be good friends to improve the strength and respect of the community as a whole.

As far as our RSI's go i have had the thought of my Character Wh1t3Kn1ght since probably 8 or 10 years old, a warrior who fights for justice in the world and protects and helps those who need it. I just needed some way to bring this to light, Now i have a way to show the world who i truly am and want to be like. the great part about the matrix is i can do all sorts of stuff in the game that can show both my power and discipline to others.

My wife CrystalKn1ght came up with the thought of her RSI as a healer and counselor, she cant heal in RL but she goes crazy with it in the matrix. as far as counseling she has studied for 2 years IRL and knows what she is talking about, BTW she enjoys HJing lol she thinks its Awesome! SMILEY

thanks for taking the time to read about our history, and the story will always continue for us.....

#36300133029 01/04/2007 14:10:08 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2007
MxO is the first mmo game I've ever played, before that they hadn't appealed to me. I was quite happy playing away on single player games while occasionally playing multiplayer games online with friends such as Red Alert 2 (which is still a great game SMILEY). So I was pretty sceptical about joining an mmo and wasn't to sure about the subscription fee, but since the matrix was something I was interested in I thought I'd give it ago, play for a couple of months and see how it goes, I can always cancel later on.

What kept me comming back to MxO for a while was the hope of live events, of something interesting happening, of finding something new and different. While the game is still a major reason why I keep playing, MxO seems different from most others which I tried on trials. The environment it is set in is great, while others go for vast worlds and different places and space, a city environment probably keeps that little edge of realism which allows you to achieve more in creating player videos/movies ect.

Probably the two main things I keep comming back for more then many others are the advancing story, something which maybe I miss in other games, but I don't really see it and the community, more specifically the friends made within the factions I've been in. Only one other game I've played has given me the same sense of community/friendship that I feel here, most of the others have just been normal forum communities and thats something I enjoy. So as long as that stays similar or evolves into something even better, I'll probably still keep comming back.

And all that written in my usual non cohesive way! SMILEY

I fell in love with the movies.  I loved the story, the theatrics, the code, the fighting, everything.  I lived and breathed anything that was the Matrix.

So, I ended up here.  This is the first MMO I've ever played and right away I realized how much fun it was.  Not only is the game open to infinite possibilities, but everything about it was drawing me in little by little, day by day.

#36300133037 01/04/2007 14:23:51 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2007
Hmm, well I'm here in MxO because I loved the movies and the ability to play an MMO set in an urban environment instead of all of the fantasy worlds out there made for a refreshing change of pace. I also came because the game seemed unique with it's large scale live events, constantly changing storyline and the unique combat system. What's kept me here has been the community, from the radio stations to the parties and the random people you run into in game.

My Avatar, meh nothing special there. I chose martial arts for my disciplines because it seemed the most visually pleasing and it made the most use of the interlock combat system.
#36300133038 01/04/2007 14:25:34 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2007

"It is the question that drives us....you know it, just as I did"

My reasons are twofold.  Firstly, as implied above, my affinity for this game, the reason I chose to pick up The Matrix Online in the store, was to find an answer to that question.  MxO takes you into the world of the movies and beyond, it allows you to be that innocent, naive, but ever hopeful, ever doubting bluepill destined to find a life beyond the world that does not feel "right"; To wake up from the dream and realise that anything is possible, that there are greater things in life than your own personal quest for "truth".  In essence it was the chance to further explore the matrix world, to look at it not from a third person point of view, but to live and breath the world of code, to witness it for myself, to take the redpill and delve into a world beyond that which had previously been all.

Secondly, there is nowhere better to express creativity and art in the modern landscape than within the limitless boundaries of an MMO.  Before MxO I had never roleplayed in an MMO, never played an MMO for that matter, but I have always been a creationist (not in the theological sense of the word).  The new format allowed for the complete creation of a story not simply told in words, but told with actions, with live dialogue, with the full range of multimedia possibilities available.  It allowed me to transcend boundaries; A writer becomes an actor, a director, a straight man...all within the creation of a single character.  I play MMO's to breath life to the stories I create.

 "Why...Why do you persist"

"Because I choose to"

#36300133066 01/04/2007 15:01:47 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2007
I started the mxo because i wanted to continue the story and see really what it would be like to be inside the matrix and partly creating my own story...
#36300133072 01/04/2007 15:07:14 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2007

I play the Matrix Online Because i like the Matrix movies, i've played lots of other MMOS from Final Fantast XI, World Of Warcraft RF Online City of heros the list is long, But this game has the best comunity and has great potential to be a even better game. I've made lots of friends on this and continue to do so. the live events are great tho im on GMT time its a bit hard for me to get to one but if i do they are good SMILEY

The Game has style, and looks good and has one of the best graphics for a MMO (In my opinion)

if only MXO had more funding to make it bigger and better this MMO would be one of the top ones out there. So much can be done here, if there was more funding for it.

MMO's didn't interest me until MxO came along.  I'm a huge fan of the movies, and finding out what happens next in the "official" story was a big draw.  It's been a bumpy ride, but there have been some high points.

Why do I stay?  Actually, I left. Sort of.  Then why am I still here?  I guess it didn't take.  It's an addiction!
#36300133164 01/04/2007 17:34:04 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2007

Overall, the reason I have stayed with The Matrix Online is because of the storyline and live events. I've played several other MMORPGs including Star Wars Galaxies and Everquest 2, but neither seemed to have a true, coherent plot. MxO offers the Sci-Fi setting I need with an actual plot in place so I feel that my character's actions actually have weight to them.

Next up would be the community. The folks I play this game with are some of the best. Most are congenial and are willing to help out, have a chat (or even an intense debate), and some people who are just there for a quick joke. I love the MxO community, and I haven't seen anything like it elsewhere (that includes the devs and their dedication to the game, too!)

I guess I also play the game for a bit of research. I intend to go into the video game development business, with intent to work on MMORPGs, so hopefully I'm learning something about communities, development, content, and other issues as I play as well.

Cheers to one and all, and a merry 2007!

#36300133185 01/04/2007 18:31:58 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2007

To start off, the reason i first joined MXO is because first of all, i'm a big fan of the matrix movies, science fiction, action, etc. So naturally i was drawn to it. I had not played many MMO's before, i participated in several beta tests and spent a few weeks with some friends in Lineage II. I saw no point to it after awhile and eventually quit. I did not play them for any length of time because there was no point to the game, there was no story, no end, just level up, level up, over and over. I didn't find them very fun.

So far, MXO is the only MMO that i believe is worth playing. Most all of the other successfull MMO's out there all have the same recurring theme. Some kind of fantasy world with orcs and elves, wizards, knights, etc. Fantasy is fine and all but i got bored of it and wanted something new. My true passion is in science fiction, stories involving technology, space, the future, etc.

The Matrix is different than these other MMO's because of its unique atmosphere, here we have realistic looking characters, something most other MMO's lack. We have a realistic looking city, also something most MMO's lack. We have fairly complex character customization tools, not the best, but certainly better than some other MMO's i have seen. There is a wide variety of unique clothing, (could be more) more so than most MMO's i have played where everyone just wants the best armor. And we have a dynamic story, something all MMO's i have played lack. Instead of just connecting the dots and going from point a to point b, leveling up and getting better armor along the way. We have real people behind the scenes changing things, playing characters, advancing the game and communicating with the players in a way that makes the players feel that they are part of what happens, it is much more fulfilling to know that we were part of something, instead of just watching it.

MXO also introduced me to something that i had little experience with on such a large scale: Role play. I had never really roleplayed before the way that it is done in MXO. Here i am a unique character, i have a purpose, beliefs, goals, i have taken sides in a massive environment and done what i can to help the growth of the side i am on. Most other games that i have played in the past, the role play is done for you, or it is non existant. Because of this unique interaction with other people and the seriousness that everyone takes with a completely fictional world, i was drawn deeper into the environment and the community.

I have never stopped to take a break from MXO, to try out another game, my subscription has remained constant, and i imagine it will as long as the game continues to run. There are few games that i am able to say i have played for years, non stop. And the games that i have played for that long are because of the community of people that i play the game with. There are so many great things about the game that i find impossible to just give up, the story, the community, and the sheer depth and realistic touch that this game has to offer makes The Matrix Online something really worth continuing.

End of story for now SMILEY

I play only one MMO now, MxO. All the others just simply don't interest me anymore, they are all too much alike with people who are always alike too. MxO is different, it's kinda the underdog of MMOs, sure the population is about as big as my back garden these days but I hope that will change. I play online games because I want to pit myself against some of the best players around. I know I ain't the best, but I ain't the worst either. I come here for fun, friendship and a challenge.

The reasons why I decided to join MxO:

Exploration of the Mega City from the movies (I generally have a high fascination for virtual environments), experience and active participation in the storyline.

Needless to say, these are not entirely the reasons why I keep playing.
Mega City is great, but only "authentic" through five partially inaccurate movie locations, and generally consists of three independent parts that are supposed to be a part of the non-existent whole I had been so excited to explore.
The active participation in the storyline has never been like I had expected it from the DVD previews (not even in the LET times, I think), and has decreased even more since the LET "left".
Of course, not decreased to zero: for those involved, it still seems to run at a considerably high level (as far as I've seen). But since I currently have no chance to participate in events, and never got into RP, this aspect is currently dead for me aswell.

Basically, I currently experience a static and non-interactive storyline, like a TV series. But this is not a real demerit for me, and I still highly enjoy and believe in the storyline, I'm very interested in it and its future evolvement and that prevents me from any thoughts about cancelling my subscription.
To be honest, I mostly experience it from outside the game - reading Sentinels, DN1 reports, live event posts and studying mission text screenshots - but it's all part of MxO, so it counts equally.

Also, the reason I mostly enjoy jacking in are of audiovisual nature:
MxO's world is just beautiful (looking past a small part of the weather cycle), looking at and moving around it, for me, is an equally fulfilling experience as music, and I just never get tired of it (don't wanna talk about performance issues right now...).
Interlock animations are also very aesthetical and exciting, as long as not screwed up by animation bugs (which is too often), I just enjoy looking at them and am not a bit bored after 1 1/2 years playing.

The ingame music just rocks, and apart from being more than listenable at its own, it increases the gaming enjoyment significantly.

The community is not a point I can really name here. When the servers merged and I started seeing players all around me, this was what really caught my interest in the game for the first time and made me play it for hours.
But slowly, I've changed to solo playing and hardly interact with anybody in the game currently.

I attend the forums more frequently than it's good for me, partially because of the game and its community specifically, but also because forums, discussions and debates about any topic generally attract me aswell.

So I can't really call the community as a reason I play MxO.

Yea, my kind of 2 cents.

MxO is the first and only one MMO I play. I am not interested in other MMOs.
The reason is.... the story of the movies I love the most continues. I am a fan of the Matrix and even played Neo in "The Matrix flash mobs in Japan".
I am very happy because the story isn't over and we can experience it.
I have to admit some of the storyline (especially Unlimit's) weren't Matrix-y at all, I believed they would be improved soon and like the current one. I will stick with this game until the end of the world.

I'd have to say I was well prepared to write off MMOs as packed with immature kids until I tried this out, to be honest. This game kinda changed my view of it. (Though my views on WoW are unchanged to this date.)

I play mxo because for me its all about the social stuff. i returned after a LONG absense from the game (i left just before the SOE handover i think) and now im just running round having fun. i dont care about levelling, doing missions or anything like that, though i wont complain if i get to take part in a few live events, i loved those things. pity they wont be on the same scale anymore but whatever.

as i work in internet security, i also run a volunteer network where people can report hackers, adware drive bys, botnets and everything else called "the fourth wall". while playing mxo a week or so ago, someone noticed my bio and asked me if i could help fix their pc because they had a trojan on it. i agreed, and while doing it thought wow, i wonder if i can set up the fourth wall in various online games, too? so we did, and now its my intention that if you see something dodgy going on, you can come to me and report it in game, and ill take care of the rest. we get stuff like that shut down on a regular basis. i also chronicle lots of virtual world activity and write about it on my sites, so thats another draw which ties into the social side of things.

#36300134167 01/06/2007 09:42:31 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2007
I first started playing:
Because I loved the films and couldn't get enough Matrix canon. Once I started playing, the global events were amazing and I said "this is going to be awesome"

Then before I could get too excited, the scale of the game died down, and it was sold to Sony because Monolith couldn't keep it up. It was about this time that the only aspect of the game that fascinated me was the Furious Angels. To this date, still the only faction with an air of mystery about it, most likely due to the high role playing standards on who gets in, and despite what developers, prima guide writers and anyone else who doesn't see it, a major protagonist for the game and the Matrix canon.

However, now the mystery is gone from me and I turn back towards the game.

Why I continue to play:
Because I have a blind hope that several things will happen:

-More story content written
-That the cinematic quality of the Matrix will be brought back to the game
-Ability of players to affect the storyline (similar in concept to the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series)
-That I will outlast the *Edit* to see a day when everyone in MxO is fun to play with
-More things to do (story arcs, quests, raids, rescues, etc)
-That a large influx of players/revenue will hit the game (either due to a massive ad campaign similar to WoW's and/or due to more mainstream matrix canon such as a film, tv series, novels, etc)
-That if we receive more money, people at SOE will re-invest money into the game to increase it's resources (ie hire more developers)
-That the PvP aspect of the game will have meaning and/or consequence.

How long can I hold my breath? Indefinitely.

How high are my expectations and faith in this team? About how the general public feel about George W. Bush.

Why? Why? Why do you persist?!

Because I choose to.

In all seriousness, I came to the Matrix Online with wide eyes and high hopes to jack into the world created by the W. Brothers and experience the excitement and sense of mystery that surrounded the movies.  I needed an escape from my real life which was a little stressful and chaotic at the time.  I was hooked on MxO from the first moment I jacked in and saw the green code falling.

During beta I started coding clothing and putting together outfits.  Back then (before I knew better) it was all about the Matrix fashion.  Amazing clothing and style.  Coding in this game was the first crafting system that made sense to me and that deepened the enjoyment.

The end of beta event was amazing!  RFZ broadcasting the event brought people to my desk/room and asked me what was going on and what was I listening to.  I told them it was a live radio feed from an online game.  They thought it was a real catastrope somewhere.  Being a Merovingian operative back then.. I tried to hide in an exile hideout to avoid the system reset but alas, I was caught.

When the game went live the thrills kept coming.  World events, missioning with the threat of PvP, and tactical combat.  Calling in backup and having factions appear out of a hardline and suddenly evening up a battle in seconds.

Why do I persist?  Because I choose to.  The story (while sometimes a little unmatrixy IMO) is something that I've not found in any other MMO except some privately run servers of different games.  This is the Matrix, with movie characters, movie locations, bullet time, kung fu, and guns.. lots of guns.  Sure those stupid hackers were here, but in the end they finally got about half of what they deserved.  The environment forces us to harken back to the movie storyline and the incredibly deep concepts which were just beyond amazing combat.  I stay for the future.. because I have hope.  Hope that the game will continue to evolve, grow, and reach it's potential one day.

"Hope, it is the quintessential human delusion, simultaneously the source of your greatest strength, and your greatest weakness."

#36300134240 01/06/2007 11:20:11 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2007

Online gaming has been a hobby of mine since .. online gaming existed. I suddenly feel old. heh.

Then way back in the late eighties I started designing a wee little mud while working as a Systems Manager.

Later on I started working on other peoples Muds and then Mucks. It grew into a rather time consuming hobby.

Then the Age of Graphics arrived.

Hmm. Perhaps I better skip ahead a decade or so. Maybe make it the short version too.

So.. I heard about this MMO some folks were making based on the Martix movies. I thought. "Uh.. I hope it's not those Enter the Matrix people... terrible game."

And the villagers rejoiced when it was discovered they were not.

The more I read about Interlock the more convinced I was that I wanted to play this game. I'm an MMO vet. I've been there, done that, got the T-shirt. But this looked cool enough to keep my interest for a very long time. AND it had a story.. the official continuation of those movies I liked. Very cool. I'm what you call a 'casual hardcore roleplayer' which basically means I was hardcore as you can get but life has worn me down and I'm tired. Just want to have fun. In character... out of character. Whatever.

Plus ... there were NO ELVES. I was tired of fantasy elves. Clones of Tolkien elves irritate me.

And it wasn't owned by SOE which at that point was a factor in my decision.

So I took the redpill.

Made a crew.

Joined a faction.

Had a blast helping a faction mate win an event on Linenoise.

SOE took over MxO. I predicted the apocolypse. I was wrong.

Took over my faction in a bloodless coup. Only took ten months. heh.

And.... *zzzzzzzzzzzzzp*

We arrive at present day.

The past couple years have been pretty tough for me in the real world. Considered quitting a few times due to reasons unrelated to MxO. I even did quit once. Just didn't make any 'goodbye' posts about it and stuff like that. Just quietly slipped away. Like I said... tough couple years. But within days I came back. I have some really great friends in my faction that have been there with me through the thick and the thin. I never would have met them if it were not for MxO.

The story and live events are something that also keeps me here. As well as all the RP players come up with. Sometimes I'm astounded by the imagination of my fellow players. That's a good thing.

Yes, the situation here at MxO could be more ideal. I know a full time LET team would bring in a lot more players. But I'm a realist. All things considered .. we're lucky to even be here. I am more than pleased by the effort put forward by the entire development team. Not just Walrus and Rarebit. All of them. And that is a big factor in me staying here.

I'm a redpill. What else am I going to do?

Plus ... I haven't found Neo yet.

So that's my story ... in my odd rambling way ...

When I first heard about MxO, what really got me interested that you had the choice to work with the Machines.  I remember watching the first movie, seeing Trinity fighting the cops in the beginning, and hearing Smith say that those men were already dead.  I thought, she's a good guy?  She just killed all those guys who were just trying to do their jobs and keep the peace.  The more I saw, the more turned off I was...I saw how the 'heroes' were willing to kill bluepills, because they could either be taken over by an agent or they were so attached to the system that they would be willing to protect it.  They didn't care how many people died in the process of extracting one person from the Matrix.  And Neo's phone call at the end made me think, You want to show all these people a world without the Machines?  How are you going to feed them all, and where will they all live?  The people in Zion pretty much live in squalor already, how much worse will it get with a huge influx of people?  Or will shutting down the Matrix just kill them all...did Morpheus and his buddies ever think of *any* of this?  I admit that I was disappointed with that ending; it seemed like it was going to be a repeat of something like 'Independence Day', where the enemy is magically destroyed and everyone lives happily ever after, with absolutely no thought of what you would need to basically rebuild the world.

I was so pleased to see it didn't turn out that way!  With the sequels and the animated feature, we saw more of the world of the Matrix...the audience (and more importantly, Neo) saw that Machines and programs weren't emotionless, hive-mind automatons -- Sati's parents, the Merovingian, Persephone, the Oracle come to mind.  I also thought it was ironic that the whole prophecy of the One (whiched seemed like a corny plot device when I saw the first movie) was actually engineered by the Machines...as was Zion.  And in the end, we saw that the solution included life for both sides, Machine and Zion.  No wiping out of the enemy.  We had to be grownups -- we had live together and work out our problems; they didn't magically disappear with a hero or a superweapon or whatever.

*That* is why I play MxO.  So I can be part of this fascinating world.  SMILEY

You absolutely speak my mind there! (Can you say so... "speak one's mind"? SMILEY )

If I wasn't "turned off" by this cop killing and collateral damage, I was at least very confused about it. I am until now - you could say that was their "anti hero" aspect, but I still didn't understand why Neo, Trinity and Tank considered the defensive forces as a hurdle, but not the fact that they'd sacrifice dozens of people for one.

But anyway, the Machines hardly make it better: they don't care if the body their Agents take over gets shot to death, and they have you kill a potential recruit to keep Zion's growth within bounds.
So yea SMILEY

Off topic:
This is also to a large part the reason why I disagree with Tytanya about Morpheus - apart from being a deeply convicted (and misled) believer since ever (yea, he looked calm and reasonable, but so does Osama Bin Laden), they were killing bluepills already back then - little different from the code bombings.

Sorry for the thread hi-jacking.
#36300134353 01/06/2007 15:03:01 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2007

I like what Illyria wrote: this is perfectly, what I think and feel. And like all the others here, who wrote, I am as dedicated, fascinated and "geeked" by the Matrix Story. But I understood the request different. As I understood, SOE wants to know, why we play online games in general. So let me answer this first.

I dont play "online games" in general, and this is - so I think - the basic drive of this specific one, the Matrix Online. I checked a lot of other games just for interest, but none of them captured me. Most of them are simply redicoulus, and all the same stuff - crappy fantasy worlds, where you have to be a super hero, smash silly monsters and do foolish quests. Its simply boring. The only other game, which could interest me is "Second Life", but this is a) not a game and b) terrible in the making, the grafics are so ugly, I need a jump into matrix after each session to "clean my mind" from all this crap. But there is one thing with Second Life, I find thrilling: the opportunity to settle in a virtual life, beyond imagination.

Matrix is different from all other games. First of all its the philosophy behind the matrix, and the ongoing story. you meet different people here, not the usual online gamers. Its so amazing that "the matrix" is "thematazing" itself in here. The matrix "is" virtual and being in the matrix makes you a virtual character  - this is one advantage, no other online world can offer. In every other game you pretend to be in "another" world, but the matrix never pretends, for it simply "is" the matrix.

Here in the matrix you meet ppl who share my interests, we have long discussions here, and each new step into the storyline reveals new points of view. So the main reasons I play are:

- its a real city

- its grafical stunning

- I love the entire atmosphere (Sound, Musik, the look & feel)

- great people, who become friends, I will not miss

- being someone else than in "real life", act different and be honest and authentic in the same time

- discovering new ways of artistic expression (cinematics/machinima)

I know this game has weaknesses - the missions could be lesser boring and the world could need some new details. I would love to have something new to explore. But this is a lack in principle that all games in this genre do have.

So - I am here because I love the Matrix and I love the people I've met here. Its my life. My second life.

Originally, I was grabbed by an advert for the beta. The game sounded kinda interesting, so I signed up and was accepted in febuary 2005. I played for a bit and only got up to level 10, but it was the End of Beta event that really grabbed my attention and made me want to buy the game.

I was busy throughout the first two months of live with exams and stuff, so it was only around June that I signed up proper. The main reason for that was an old friend who I'd lost touch with had just got back in contact with me, and when I told him about MxO wanted to join.

So the first few months were basically us two catching up and having fun. And in time I drifted into TGS, while he soon followed. From that point, srrounded by wonderful people, I just got very into the game, the social aspect in particular.

I've tried other MMOs, and to be honest I've never got that immersion that carried me through MxO. I always get to about level 15 then quit, because I don't get the same community spirit.

Now, unfortunatly, I've been at Uni for 6 months and I find that the game just can't grab my interest anymore. Old friends drifting away, and a lack of will to make new ones. My account runs out febuary 2007, but who knows, I may be back to see what changed have gone on.

The Fun i have on vent with the people i met tru the game is awsome. We have tried other games but we all come back here because the game cant be touched any thing else i have ever played. MxO has got every thing i want in a game and altho there are times when things can be down theres allways a great comunity that look on the the bright side of things instead of focusing on all the negative all the time.

Theres the Graphical aspect of the game to. Ive played a warlock and what not, but the fact that the matrix is based on a real city is cool. Id rather wander tru a city running from agents than Be running out of caves from crab-spiders.

Saying that Tho one of the things that dragged me into the game was the fact that it was on the shelf in my local game store. other than that i would have never played it or even found out about it. Im sure there are thousands of others out that that are the same.

I was drawn into the Matrix universe, and have played Enter The Matrix and viewed the Animatrix. On top of that, what I saw on a friend's website just made me shout to myself, "Cool, I wish I could do that!" Next thing I know, I took the red pill, jacked in, and hooked up with said friend. All I could say is that I actually enjoyed Matrix Online over my junior year in high school.

As for my experience compared to other MMOs, this is the one game that is actually solo-friendly for me. I've played a game titled Earth & Beyond, and I did not enjoy it because A. I started out so late in the game, B. I was forced to be on teams just to enjoy myself, and C. The community was full of [insert profanity-filled insults] . The game was lenient in terms of in-game punishment (like the Death Effect), and I love the idea of "no XP debts." XP debts in my opinion just ruin the experience, especially when players know for a fact that they weren't doing anything wrong if a bug was the reason behind this.  I also liked the idea of having access to all of the abilities from the get go so that I could experiment with other trees without the hassle of creating multiple characters, and the idea made perfect sense.  I also liked the idea of "Make a difference in the Matrix storyline."

Well the reason i started playing was pretty much the same as the rest of you guys.

I really really really really love the matirx, everything about it takes me in deeper to the idea itself, its imposible not to be fasinated by the very idea. And well when i found out there was a online version of the matrix coming I just had to be a part of it, how could I not it was the MATRIX!, So the Reason I joined was becasue it gave me a chance to be a part of something i loved and still love so much

well as far as this whole thing goes i think the reason why ppl play mmo's is because of the fact that they can talk to ppl from and to around thw world like a person playing from america here can talk to someone in germany whos also playing it offers a level of play that regular console games can't really offer even thoe console are online capable now it just doesn't compare to internet mmo's plus these games happen in real time where as console games don't, but some games do so basically mmo's is big because of just two words

        Diversity and  Experience

thats why ppl play mmo's .

Your life is as diverse as you make it to be.

#36300142969 01/16/2007 16:34:05 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2007

I have never played an MMO before.  In fact I never really heard of them.  I only heard of people who were getting addicted to online games and neglecting their real life so MMO's were not appealing to me.  Not to mention that dragons, goblins, and elves just were not my thing.

Then one day I pop in the Matrix DVD and there was an entire segment dedicated to The Matrix Online.  I was blown away.  I never saw something like that before.  I could actually jack into the Matrix and interact with thousands of other redpills.  I could create my own story, and be my own operative.  I would be able to start off where the movies left off.

So I log onto the forums and found an entire community of people who were just as excited as I was.  No more playing against the computer.  I actually had other real people to play with who shared in the same desires and excitement that I had.  I was never into role playing games, but this was all digital.  People created their own websites and started their own factions in preparation for the game.

I have to say this was the most coolest video game experience I have ever had and I had not even jacked into the game yet because Beta had not started.

3 years later I am 30 years old, married, with a son.  I have a real life and hobbies, however I still jack in every day.  I have no desire to play the other MMOs out there.  Nothing comes close to the design and concept of Matrix Online.  Even though I am disappointed with the turnout of the game and I have hopes and desires of what it could be, this is still the coolest video game experience I have ever had.

If MxO were to shut down I would not be joining another MMO, unless one is created with this type of concept.  Fantasy, and Middle Ages stuff is not my cup of tea.  SMILEY

Well I started back in the trial period and the second i started playing I was hooked on it, but i didnt have a card at the time so couldnt pay so to feed my addiction. I made multiple accounts just to keep playing until i got my card. The day i got my cred card I was putting the numbers in my account and getting to experience more. Ive met a lot of people during my time in MxO some people ive laughed with others i have hurt in emotional ways but no matter how crappy this game gets I keep coming back for more.  The people, The Live events, The Game Play, My Faction the list is endless but I hope to stay in MxO until the end I may cancel my account now and then  but i always come back for more. I guess there is no reason to explain why I play MxO I just do and im glad I do.

I played becuase I love the matrix and to see its storyline continued. The thrill of getting to Lv50 and trying out all the abilities the game has to offer and the community is the best I've ever encountered, and I've enjoyed every single word spoken both in game and on these boards.

With the intro of CR2 was the icing on the cake as far as core gameplay.

I just wish the game wasn't so "short"

#36300143267 01/17/2007 00:48:13 Re:What's Your Story? - Thursday, January 4, 2007
Why I play this game rather than all the others that are out there?

Sure I don't do it for the monthly fee's which are above standard..
I don't do it, JUST because I happened to be in beta testing, or the fact that is was my first MMORPG..
I don't do it for all the game features that were lost since beta, abilities such as intensify damage, or other features such as wallkicks, the sentinal, and live events on times where everyone was able to enjoy them, or the openness of live events as it was back then...
Now it's only a select few and the rest can all go do something else, preferably somewhere else.
Neither for the long missions series, the rare items or anything related to these two for that matter.

I play this game because it is the most realistic of all.
It has the coolest abilities, the best features when it comes to clothing, the endless stress and level floors that are the Megacity.
It's the thrill of,  logging in as quickly as you can, hearing a spasm of bleeps coming from the client..
it is, the kick that you get when you come through that hardline and enter Mara C, and you see the church and the music starts playing..
It's the simulation, without the crap.
I mean, consider that 80% of all the other MMORPG's are WoW ripoffs.
Wether it be in orcs and elves, or the same *CENSORED* lvl 5 wolves you first encounter in each of those games that drop either meat or money.

This game is a uniqum, if you will.

Nothing compares to hyperjump, or having an agent hunt you down when you do something the system dislikes.
Comparison: Having a huge furry animal after me cos I took an egg..       SMILEY
For those who read Baudrillard; It's the simulation.
Although it's not real, it's real enough to pretend it's real and therefor makes it real while it isn't real.

It's that this is not my world.
But it is my RSI in "that" world.
A world that I do not control, but where to some extend I do play an important factor.

It is that, if you have enough imagination from time to time, my ventrilo server is my hoovercraft.
You nearly *CENSORED* literally jack in to the Matrix.
The community is the Matrix that is the happening that is The Matrix Online.

Because all the other MMORPG's are life-replacers, and the Matrix extends.
If I choose too, I can login and support my faction.
It also happens for me when i'm not online, due to the live events and the story line.
What do the other mmorpg's have?  items and raids... nothing special happening there.
If you don't log in there, everything'll continue and you won't mis out on anything interresting, except for maybe an item or such?

The Matrix is a rush and The Matrix Online is the only way to experience it.
None of the other games in The Matrix series compare.
And no other MMORPG compares.

That's my view on WHY I play this game.
