Thanks for that, firstly some of the pictures in the guide could be better SMILEY

I would state "anywhere in the matrix" about being flagged for pvp, just so ppl get it.

Also looking at it straight off we could add something about the RP side of things, where you mention aobut meeting other redpills, like

"become part of the story while interacting with players, get to meet LE chracters in events around the matrix as you lvl" along those lines.

#36300022381 08/11/2006 17:52:28 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
good stuff walrus cant wait for the next cin and Hallways hopefully also would prrobaly mention The Risks of Leavin richland areas to the slums or international and downtown  also do u think we can see a picture possibly of a org area for the hallways?
#36300022394 08/11/2006 18:18:17 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
No offense, but hardly anyone is going to read the guide unless it pops up in-game. Most noobs would rather be frustrated with the game and leave rather than take the time to go to the website and click two links.

Will there be some sort of pop-up window in-game, like the Sentinel?
#36300022398 08/11/2006 18:23:48 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
excelent guide, just needing some small tweaks as outlined above. SMILEY

also might i ask what is the issue holding up the white hallways ?
#36300022407 08/11/2006 18:46:20 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006

After a quick skim i'd just say it needs

A) To either be entirely IC from tyndall, and done well, or completely OOC from the get go. The intro is just, imo, really quite shoddy atm and doesn't enhance the experience. Just makes it feel awkward and faked.

B) Better explaination of a hostile server.

Im sure theres more but thats for after sleep. lol.

#36300022416 08/11/2006 18:54:21 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
For a noob starting out I thought the guide was excellent. If I had something like that to go by than life would've been alot easier on the road to 50 from the get go. Then again....alot of the stuff in the guide wasn't available then, but you get my point. Well done!
Can't think of much else that needs to be added myself except maybe mentioning constructs and the archive missions.
#36300022437 08/11/2006 19:39:09 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
Looks pretty good for a start. I think it could be better though.

---First thing I would do is make the article out of character so it won't be as biased.  You can have it from the Operator or another redpill to make it feel Matrixy.

---Tell them that nothing is stopping them from going to other parts of the City like downtown. Just warn them of the dangers. That will make the player feel that they're not barricaded in one spot.

---The Mission system article definatly needs to stand out more. Most players would rather start with the storylike and they're more likely going to skim and skip that section, and as a result, won't have an idea on how to start their adventure. And be sure to tell them about the more missions they do, the more likely the Machines and Merovingian takes notice and invite them to their organization. (Having the article OOC will make it easier to do this.)

---Merge the two Uriah articles together so the player won't feel stranded there. I don't think the lower level mobs attack new redpills so they should be able to roam around without too much trouble. This will help make it feel like they 'can and cannot do' instead of 'should and shouldn't.

#36300022508 08/11/2006 22:49:46 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
Hmm it looks very good Walrus, though I would recomend a better looking picture of Tyndall if possible, the white little pixels around her just sort of throw her off.

Secondly I would recomend putting in something about roleplay. Possibly about doing it with your fellow redpills, learn the ropes from them. And that the guide itself is coming from a IC prespective of zionist character

Also as time moves on and you progress  you are capable for working then people other then zion.
#36300022533 08/12/2006 00:00:59 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
That picture of tyndall just stinks. It's got jaggies on the edges...if you could atleast blur those out with photoshop that'd help a bit.  But it could be better.

Looking forward to update 46! Can't wait for the new Zero One updates!
#36300022613 08/12/2006 03:58:31 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
I agree with Q, that Tyndall picture is quite horrid. I had a go at cleaning up, if you care to use it:

Right, now to the guide itself:

I beleive that if you start in character, you should keep it in character, and if you desperately need to go out of character, use brackets, just for one word explanations. A prime example of this is the descriptions of the servers, IMO, i'd write something like:

"There are three intances (Servers) to choose from in The Matrix.Vector is what we call a “hostile” instance, which means once you reach a level of experience (Level 16), The truce between you and other organisation's redpills becomes void and you are subject to Organisation versus Organization combat (PvP) rules. The Recursion and Syntax instances are “normal” instances. You can choose when to fight by flagging for combat (by typing /pvp in the chat window.)

Choose your instance carefully, as RSIs cannot be moved between servers. If you are planning on working with other people make sure you are all together on the same instance."

*Shrugs* Just my take on how it should be set out. I think the rest should be set out in a similar standard. As far as content itself goes, however, then the guide is a pretty good tool, very good indeed, it covers all the basics and some advanced steps to getting to grips with the Matrix. Good guide, Walrus. SMILEY

Also, no pressure on the White Hallways thing. SMILEY SMILEY
#36300022623 08/12/2006 04:50:45 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006

There should be a small section telling em how to 'get into 'the story, like saying bout watching the cinematics, checking out the archivists, asking questions etc.

Maybe even point em towards certain fan work SMILEY

Also, i though i might as well say it here...

GO OVER SOME OF THE 'I' NPCS DIALOGUE, UPDATE AND ADD TO IT. REALLY POINT EM OUT TO PEOPLE. THEY CAN BE A REALLY AWESOME TOOL TO LET PEOPLE WHAT ELSE THEY CAN DO BESIDES MISSIONS.

I hate how this game has more content than just missions but people just dont know about any of it, there is no mention of several key points like pandoras box or the archivists in game. Which sucks.

#36300022624 08/12/2006 04:54:16 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
If you could get Chuui, or just copy his notes from the Redpill guides on the forums, you'd have your own Redpill New Player Guide very quick.
#36300022626 08/12/2006 04:55:47 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006

"The one exception is clothing, which you'll see is limited here, but that will soon be remedied. Once you jack in and start exploring the Matrix you will find yourself overwhelmed with new and stylish options for just about any taste."

Think its a little vague and confusing. 'Here' sounds like refers to the game in general at first, a bit offsetting. The remedied thing is a wee bit confusing, and put blunty, pointless too.

Maybe something like...

"The one exception is clothing, which you'll notice is limited during character creation, but dont worry, once you jack in and start exploring the Matrix you will find yourself overwhelmed with new and stylish options for just about any taste."

#36300022628 08/12/2006 04:59:25 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006

"Finally you need to select a unique hacker “handle” for your character."

Hacker sounds a little restricted and may confuse someone completely new to the game "What? am i instantly a hacker?". Besides, not everyones background stories has them as the classic Matrix 'hacker getting into the redpill crowd via crazy chat rooms'.

Solution? Just change the word hacker to redpill.

#36300022636 08/12/2006 05:20:12 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006

"And, if you do so, you are likely to be at level 5 before you move deeper into the city."

I dunno, i feel the level 5 comment is a little bland and doesn't make em feel like it matters or is a good idea as much as it should.

I suggest saying 'to be at a healthy level 5'. That one little word makes a lot of difference when reading it from a newbie perspective. Makes it 'friendlier' too.

"When you finish talking to Clio, do as she asks and load up your Abilities. Turn around, right click the hardline, and select Abilities. Load up with everything you have available, which includes Abilities from the Coder, Hacker, and Operative branches. Click here for specific information on your initial Ability loadout."

The second 'abilites' should be in apostraphies (sp?) it refers to something they should be clicking from a selection of options.

The 'click here' bit should also be on a seperate line as opposed to stuck on the end of the bullet point.

"Make sure you have all your activated Abilities in your hotbar before moving out. Open the Action panel (Hotkey: O) and drag each into a spot on the hotbar"

Not really referring to the guide here but is this mentioned in the in-game tuturial? Last i heard it was confusing for players to understand how to 'calibrate' their tactics.

"Doing work for all the Collectors will earn you some Enhanced items (items with upgrades or "buffs"SMILEY. It will take a total of 19 Chopper Keys ( Exile gang collectible items) to earn them all. This will take a bit of time, but you'll also be earning experience, $Info, and other items as you do so"

Just for added clarification i think it should read "Doing work for all the Uriah collectors" and "(The local exile gang's collectible item)"

"They let you get anywhere inside the world instantly-keep your eyes peeled!"

Reads better if "-- so keep your eyes peeled!"

"You fill this capacity by purchasing or coding new Abilities to use. Make sure you continue to gain Abilities so you can use all available memory space."

Be nice to have 'and fufill your current potential' on the end. Just sounds cool and i think the focus should be more about being powerful and kick *CENSORED* than just mindlessly filling your memory space.

#36300022653 08/12/2006 05:43:26 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
i am glad you did not mention mara c there, we need to get people out of that hole and into better areas of the matrix like downtown
#36300022675 08/12/2006 06:21:07 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
Images

Images on the website are supposed to show off how fantastic the game is in visual quality, so far I see hardly any screens or character renders that show off the true power of MxO's graphics.

That tyndall image is absolutely god awful, go with a smoother more defined pose of Tyndall, for example like the following:

The tutorial images should be larger, showing off the full majesty of the training dojo, for example:

Again, more sexier defined images are paramount to showing off the game.

Screenshots in the old days, used to inspire new players to see characters with kickass clothing, and sunglasses and make them think "*CENSORED* I want to look like that". So we need redpill images don't we?

I would also recommend adding a screenshot of the launcher at the server list, for the server choice bulletin point.
#36300022686 08/12/2006 06:48:53 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006

Agreed Trax, the images across the site need to definately be better (that download now agent anyone?)

Also agreed on the dojo and redpill shots.

The 'talk to your fellow redpills' one has A LOT of potential...

The Matrix Online
Quick-Start Guide - 08/11/2006

Welcome to the real world, redpill. My name is Tyndall, and I was once an operative for Zion, like you. Now, I train new recruits and sometimes act as an operator for those working within the Matrix.

As a newly awakened coppertop, you have a lot to learn about how the Matrix works now that you are unplugged. Fortunately for you, you are not the first one to make the transition. And, by understanding your new role in the world, you also will not be the last.

There is a lot of information to download, but this article will get you started. Review it carefully and your first time jacking in will not be too uncomfortable.

Choosing a ServerNon Hostile worlds

There are 3 servers in the Matrix Online, 2 non hostile, and one a hostile PvP world. Recursion and Syntax are non hostile instances of the Matrix. On these servers you are subject to your own choice of PvP, choosing to become hostile to other players and organisations when you choose to do so.

Hostile PvP enabled words

Vector-Hostile
is the instance of the Matrix of which you are permanently hostile to players and organisations, from level 16 onwards. If you are an operative with a passion for danger and combat, then Vector-Hostile is the server choice for you.

  • Choose your server carefully, as characters cannot be moved between servers. If you are planning on playing with other people make sure you are all playing on the same server.
Creating Your Character

After you’ve chosen your server, it is time to create your character. You can have up to three characters on each server, for a total of nine possible characters.

First, you will be prompted to select a personality archetype. These archetypes modify your beginning Statistics: Each one grants +3 to one Statistic and -3 to another. Though this choice will affect your character’s initial capabilities, everybody changes after taking the red pill and you will be given the chance to alter your character’s attributes as you gain experience.

Click here for more detailed information on Archetypes and Statistics.

The next step is to create an appearance for your character’s RSI (Residual Self Image). Spend some time now on choosing your physical traits because they cannot be changed after this point. The one exception is clothing, which you’ll see is limited here, but that will soon be remedied. Once you jack in and start exploring the Matrix you will find yourself overwhelmed with new and stylish options for just about any taste.

You can customize your character's RSI (Residual Self Image) in many ways.

Finally you need to select a unique hacker “handle” for your character. Each handle is not only unique to the server, but unique across all servers. You will also be asked to create a name for your character’s name as a bluepill (for example, Neo’s name as a bluepill was “Thomas Anderson”SMILEY.

Running the Tutorial

Once you create your character you will be put into your first mission. This mission will help you understand the basics of movement, combat, and interacting with other players and the environment.

Hints and Tips
  • Pay attention to the messages that appear at the bottom of your screen. While Niobe and Link will help you understand the world you’re about to enter, the messages will relay important gameplay information.
  • Combat training is the most important part of the Tutorial: Pay attention!
  • When you first enter the dojo, you may not be able to attack the NPC (Bob). Check your tactics for an important lesson: You can’t attack if you’re using the Block tactic; it’s for defense only.
  • Spawn Bob several times to get used to the combat system. Try out all the different tactics, your special attacks, and get used to using the hotbar. You’ll thank yourself later.
  • Try all four combat Tactics (Speed, Power, Grab, and Block) and Withdrawing during combat training. The better you understand their uses, the easier things will be once you jack in.

Respawn "Bob" to get used to the combat system. Jacked In: Uriah Industrial (and Level 5) in a Nutshell

You will still have a lot to learn after you finish the Tutorial, but there are Guides awaiting your arrival. After you jack out of the Tutorial and watch the first cinematic, you will find yourself at the Uriah Industrial N E hardline. Straight in front of you is an NPC Collector named Clio. Double click her to start learning your about your new Awakened life.

There are five Guide Collectors and one Neighborhood Collector in Uriah Industrial and you will want to work for each before you leave the area. There is nothing stopping you from running off into the wilds of the Matrix without doing so, but there are certainly incentives for any player to work for all the Collectors. And, if you do so, you are likely to be at level 5 before you move deeper into the city.

Clio is the first Guide Collector you will meet inside the Matrix. Hints and Tips
  • When you finish talking to Clio, do as she asks and load up your Abilities. Turn around, right click the hardline, and select Abilities. Load up with everything you have available, which includes Abilities from the Coder, Hacker, and Operative branches. Click here for specific information on your initial Ability loadout.

  • Make sure you have all your activated Abilities in your hotbar before moving out. Open the Action panel (Hotkey: O) and drag each into a spot on the hotbar.

  • Create a simulacrum to help you out (Remote Proxy 1.0). This handy “pet” will do a lot of your work for you and take some of the heat in combat as well.

  • Use your Evade Combat Ability to create a “shield” around your character. Even if you plan on going into Interlock combat, it will keep NPCs from drawing you in before you are ready.

  • Whenever you gain a level, take a moment to increase your Stats and Ability levels. The most important Ability to level up is Awakened—if you don’t have enough $Information to level everything, level Awakened first.

  • Doing work for all the Collectors will earn you some Enhanced items (items with upgrades or “buffs”SMILEY. It will take a total of 19 Chopper Keys ( Exile gang collectible items) to earn them all. This will take a bit of time, but you’ll also be earning experience, $Info, and other items as you do so.

Uriah Industrial SW Hardline and Beyond

By the time you make level 5 in Uriah, you will have a pretty good handle on the basics of life as a redpill. There is still much to learn, but you will be ready to handle the challenges of the adjoining neighborhoods. Here is some advice to help you on your way.

Hardlines are your keys to the Matrix.

The last thing you’ll be asked to do (by Collector RPM) will be to synchronize the Uriah Industrial SW Hardline. This does two things: Adds a new hardline to your available list and gives you experience. Possibly the most important thing you will do while adventuring in the Matrix is Synchronize new hardlines. They let you get anywhere inside the world instantly—keep your eyes peeled!

Information is everything.

You already know that it takes a lot of $Information to keep your Abilities leveled up. You will also need it to buy and create items, including your Ability Codes. While you can earn $Info by taking out Exile gang members, the easiest way to earn more is by taking missions. You can reach your Organization contact at any time through the Mission panel (Hotkey: N). Contact him or her and earn some $Info while working for the cause.

Maximize your memory capacity.

Looking at your Ability tree, you will have extra memory capacity by the time you reach the Uriah Industrial SW hardline. As you gain experience, you also gain memory capacity. You fill this capacity by purchasing or coding new Abilities to use. Make sure you continue to gain Abilities so you can use all available memory space.

Unsynchronized hardlines grant experience when tagged.

Learn to decompile code early.“I don't even see the code. All I see is...blond, brunette, red-head...” – Cypher, The Matrix

The Decompile Ability and Code Decompiler item will make your life much easier in the Matrix. With the Ability loaded, you can use the decompiler to reduce items to their component bits. These, in turn, can be uploaded to your Code Archive and later used to create other items. If you decompile an item you do not yet know how to make, you will earn experience and learn the code recipe for the item. If you already know how to make the item, you will break it down into bits.

You can find the Decompile Ability on any Coder Vendor and the Code Decompiler on any Item Vendor in the Matrix. Get them early, level the Ability when you can, and decompile often.

Talk with other redpills.

The greatest source of information about the Matrix is the redpills who inhabit the world within the system. They can assist you in missions, Hardline locations, infiltration of exile bases and fill you in on the vital developments that occur across the Megacity. You will also see the advantage of the Faction system as you progress through the game. When you join a faction, or crew, you will play along with other redpills in the game as part of a group. This system will increase your capabilities and enjoyment within your time in The Matrix Online.

Factions and crewsA crew is a group of two to twelve characters who group together to pool their resources and share the facilities of a Hovercraft. The leader of a Crew is called a Captain. A Crew is a persistent group that lasts until the Crew is disbanded. A Crew is affiliated with an Organization. Captains of Crews are the only individuals who can create and join Factions.
Archived image unavailable: factiongo1.html

Forming a Crew

In order to form a Crew, a character must have a sufficiently high reputation score with the Organization that Crew is to be affiliated with. Once a character has achieved this Reputation level, he can begin recruiting. Two characters are required for a new Crew to be formed. To form a Crew, a character must successfully recruit another individual using the Crew UI. If the recruited individual accepts, a Crew is formed and the character who initiated the recruitment is designated as the Crew Captain. A Character can never be in more than one Crew at a time.

Naming the Crew

Upon successful formation of a new Crew, the Captain will be prompted on the Crew Management panel to name the Crew. A default name is presented in the form of "Character Name's Crew". Crew names must be unique, and must pass through the Obscenity Filter. Once a Crew name has been chosen, it cannot be changed.

Organization Affiliation

Crews receive equipment allocation based on their collective Reputation with an Organization. A Crews Reputation is the sum of all the members Reputations. The Crew's Reputation does not need to be updated more than once per day.

[align=justify]

Recruiting Crew Members

Other characters can be added to the Crew by selecting them and clicking the "Invite" button on the Crew interface panel. If a target character is already a member of another Crew, the Invite button is not available. Any Crewmember can invite other characters to join the Crew, until the maximum number of characters is met (twelve Crew members). Characters must be in the same general area in order to send and receive Crew invitations. Characters in Interlock cannot receive Crew invitations. In this situation, the player sending the invitation receives an error message, stating that this character is unavailable.

Captain and the First Mate

The founder of the Crew is automatically designated as the Captain. The Crew Captain has special authority over certain Crew resources and organization. One of these authorities is the ability to designate a First Mate. A First Mate is a member of the Captain's Crew that shares some of the abilities with the Captain. These are described further below.

  • There can only be one First Mate. If that character leaves the Crew, the First Mate designator can be assigned to another Crewmate by the Captain. The Captain can also remove and re-assign the First Mate title at will.
  • There can only be one Captain. If the Captain leaves the Crew, the leadership will transfer to the First Mate or the most senior member of the Crew (who has been in the Crew the longest).

Crew Management

The Captain is the only character that can kick other characters out of the Crew. A Captain can also disband a Crew completely. All of this functionality is in the Crew Management panel.

Crew Communication

Upon creation of a Crew, a Crew Chat Channel is automatically created. This Chat Channel is updated as Crewmates leave, and new Crewmates are recruited.

Disbanding a Crew
The Captain's Crew Management interface includes an option for "Disbanding the Crew". If they choose to do so, the Crew is disbanded and the Crew is gone forever. Any and all resources of the Crew are lost. Players could start a new Crew with the same name, but for all purposes of the game, it would be a completely different Crew. At any time, a player can quit the Crew from the Crew interface. To rejoin, they need to have a Crewmember invite them to join again.
Shared Crew Resources
Every Crewmember has access to the Crew Information Bank. These are both accessed on the in the Loading Area.
Crew Information Bank
The Crew Information Bank is a pool of Information that Crew Members may contribute to. Members of the Crew are not required to add Information to the Bank, but may be encouraged to do so. Only the Captain or First Mate will have the ability to remove Information from the Crew Info Bank. They can distribute the Information from the Bank as they see fit and no attempt to regulate this activity will be made.
::: Back To News

Additions to the guide are ripped from the DN1 archive. I would have added a guide to the contructs but I couldn't dig much up. Anyway I think if this is going to be the only guide on the website, it needs to be a little more than a slapdash FAQ, it needs to be as in-depth as the old guides on DN1.

Learn to decompile code early. “I don't even see the code.

Factions and crews A crew is a group of two to twelve characters who group together to pool their resources and share the facilities of a Hovercraft.

::: Back To News

This is really great Walrus, glad we're finally seeing this after two or three trials have gone through. As they say, " better late then never!"

Few Insights.

"Click here for specific information on your initial Ability loadout."    Is this link purposely missing or will there be a change to the initial abilites given to new players?

Suggestions for additions to the Quick-Start Guide:

Use Repair RSI 1.0 to heal yourself and/or your SIM if needed. Health pills are handy but at this stage in the game you won't have an unlimited supply, so use the abilies you have to stay alive.

Considerations:

Loading Area: more then 50% of the newer players I talk to have no idea of either A) what to do with extra bits B) Where the extra bits go to or C) how to get those bits out of where they went if need be. The Loading Area has become foreign land for many new players entering the game. In some capacity it must be explained what the Loading Area is for and how it can be used.

Marketplace:
I understand the faliciy of discussing a "broken" component of the game to new players, but they must atleast understand that the marketplace is not seller of goods in town. And yes, I do understand it is up to a server community to alter the goods offered on the marketplace, but with the current system that would require "full-time" attention and upkeep (somethings players should not have to do). Now most do know about Vendor's but a good portion of players expect to pay riddiculos amoutns of $info for over-priced goods from the marketplace. Some sort of crash course on what to get, from where and what vendors would help.

Major Hardlines: We know there are a few HL'sin richland that new players ar almost guarntee'd to meet other players, would it be against some rule to state these locations? (Tabor West, Mara Central, etc.)

Also, I dig the Archetypes, Stats, and Influences - 08/11/2006 But I think the Charts for attack styles need to somehow be worked into that section, it's quite informative about the new combat system, dubbed "CR2".

Examples from your other OSotLG and Dev Journals:

Keep up the great work guys!

I cant be bothered reading everyones post so sorry if i repeat this but i didnt see any mention of outside of melee attack, ive seen people to lvl 20 and not knowing about them.  Also i would recomend u have this page on the (ingame) TV or whatever as not everyone goes on the forums.

Also everyones Tyndall pictures are much better than the guides and tbh all the images suck in there.  Also i would recomend u talk a bit about code bits, or atleast have an image of one as the question of what they do has been asked a lot.

Otherwise very nice.  SMILEY

I don't think it's been mentioned but the decompile section should mention that the colour of the name of the item works like enemies. Grey is easy.. purple impossible.. etc, etc. I used to get a lot of people asking about that. Or does it still work that way? lol. Been awhile since I had to worry about that and payed attention.
#36300023228 08/13/2006 04:04:53 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
Great feedback everyone.

I'd personally just like to add up to the ic / ooc issue. I'm for translating the whole guide in OOC.

It's not even the fact that Tyndall is a Zionite -- all redpills are freed and trained by Zion, so there's nothing wrong about them being the ones providing a crash course for newly awakened ones.

It's rather the fact that she's actually a canon story character, and shouldn't be "abused" this way, imo. Having her write a city guide is one thing. Having her talk about asking other players, double-clicking hardlines, or getting to know about the "basics of being a redpill" by collecting Chopper keys or talking to Collectors is another -- know what I'm sayin'? As already pointed out above, it just seems "fake".
People interested in the storyline aspect of the game might even get sceptical.

Of course, the whole text can be translated into believeable IC, as perfectly demonstrated by PBlade. But, all those canon expressions with small brackets behind are all unnecessarily confusing for new players. What they need is a straight, simple and accessible guide they don't have any problems to understand.
Digging through all those RP terms and finding out what means what would be an abdicable difficulty.

Of course, if you have time, you can still write a second version IC, maybe to give players some kind of first impression about role playing -- although I don't think that's really necessary.
#36300023254 08/13/2006 05:15:35 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
As awesome as those bits on faction/crew are trax i dont think the 'quick start' guide, for the absolute essentials, is really in need of em. Maybe another guide.
#36300023269 08/13/2006 05:53:34 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
Just a small comment about links. It is generally considered better practice nowadays to NOT use "Click here". Avoid it. It is far better to use an easily noticable link that correctly defines what it is linking to. Ie:

"Click here for specific information on your initial Ability loadout."

Could be rendered: Get specific information on your initial Ability loadout.

With links on either (or preferably both) bolded parts of the sentence.  And the same for all other links.

More information on not using "click here".

#36300023338 08/13/2006 09:13:16 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006

I prefer click here, it clearly tells you what ya gotta do to learn what you want, hyper linked random words of sentences is confusing and not all that attractive.

but thats just me i guess SMILEY

#36300023360 08/13/2006 10:21:22 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
Click here is redundant and bad form. especially when you can use stylesheets to clearly indicate where your links are. Furthmore, the linked words are hardly random, they are in fact the most relevant words to link, even more than "click here" which doesn't tell you what you are clicking for. And really, do you need to be told to click a link when you can actually see it's a link for yourself?

#36300023456 08/13/2006 12:56:19 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
I'd like to see some mention of the Machine or Merovingian orgs; it seems everything for newbies is delivered specifically by Zion personnell. While RP-wise this makes sense as players always start to Zion, delivering a guide in this format would probably serve to further org unbalance instead of remedy it.

Also, one thing I think that needs to be fixed ASAP is the Attribute Archetype descriptions INGAME. The Character Creation screens still show the CR1 definitions, a la Perception = MA, etc - and even if this guide is popped up in a web browser ingame as part of the tutorial, by then the character is created with the (wrong) attributes and it's too late.
#36300023492 08/13/2006 14:12:02 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
Hehe... Keep working on them White Hallways! :O

I was reading the Guide and it seems to be very... Basic (As what is needed, I guess)--However, just something you might want to note is this:

"As a newly awakened coppertop, you have a lot to learn about how the Matrix works now that you are unplugged."

Repeating ourselves, are we, Tyndall? Heh. But yes. I might suggest keeping the Guide either OOC or IC to prevent conflict. Better yet, allow for the first most basic section to be written OOC and other sections, that talk about characters and alliances and organizations and all of that, to be STRICTLY In-Character. I'm pretty sure you could get any player like Chuui or someone to give you better pointers... I don't know.
#36300023744 08/13/2006 21:33:45 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
Not too sure about better pointers, but I do agree that it mustn't deal with just Zion. Perhaps write it from the point of view of your Hoverbarge Operator and not Tyndall. She only really comes into the picture during the introduction missions, whereas your Hoverbarge/Hovercraft Operator is *always* with you. That would also avoid the Zion bias that we unfortunately currently have.

If I can find time, perhaps I'll have a go at writing something, but I'm pretty pressed right now =/
#36300023828 08/14/2006 01:00:22 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006

Speaking as a zionite I'd have to say I'd have no problem at all with using a character other than Tyndall.

It would kind of make sense, to me, if an agent of the system delivered the quick start guide rather than the controller for Zion. How about Agent Pace? Or even our old friend Agent Gray? He never gets any publicity. lol. You'd think he'd be more famous after everything he's been through. SMILEY

 Just a thought. /shrug

#36300023884 08/14/2006 04:07:27 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006

Personally i think that a good tutorial is everything.
and especially for new players, they get overwhelmed by the option and complexity of the Matrix.

 The Tutorial starts off good
(how the pictures look in this phase are not important, more about the content)

Well the tutorial covers the basics.
but what i do miss is stuff further up the road like,

Collectors, Hideouts, Archives, explaining coding.
how you buy new abilities,

I as a lvl50 get a lot of questions concerning these subject when i'm helping new red pills.

2nd i would like to add that, its a good effort to make a new and helpfull tutorial since the new combat system 2.0 is in order.

 Good Job...keep it up

#36300024043 08/14/2006 08:34:24 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006
I think the guide is a great start.  To me one of the critical parts of a new user in MxO is the difference between the Hostile server and the others and while its mentioned here it doesn't get the explanation that it needs. Players need to understand whas "being hostile" to everyone after level 16 means so they can choose if this is the playstyle they want to be a part of, otherwise they will end up having to re-roll a character on another server when they figure it out.
#36300024145 08/14/2006 11:07:13 Re:The Other Side of the Looking Glass - Friday, August 11, 2006

Good stuff so far, folks. Keep it coming.

Please do keep in mind that this is designed to be something that can be gone through in a short amount of time. It needs to cover the absolute basics to help a new player get into the game and playing--more advanced topics like crews and factions and the nitty-gritty of coding can come in other guides.

The art suggestions will be helpful when I hand this off to the web team. But I do realize the images aren't great--this is a "draft" guide. So, specific comments about the current images aren't necessary at this point--they'll be better in the final version.

Yes, the initial loadout portion isn't done. I forgot to pull the link out. Eventually, it will need to be there.

Thanks again for the comments!

No offense, but hardly anyone is going to read the guide unless it pops up in-game. Most noobs would rather be frustrated with the game and leave rather than take the time to go to the website and click two links.

Will there be some sort of pop-up window in-game, like the Sentinel?
Anamodiel has a point here... Perhaps start all characters with a "Welcome to The Matrix" or "Red Pill Handbook" that spawns the popup window when used?

Why did you censor "hell"?

Don't stop working on your guide now, though. At the rate things get done around here, I wouldn't expect the guide thing (or anything website-related) to get done til Groundhog's Day.
