Right now Hurricane Rita is heading towards the Texas/Lousiana area and its not looking good. Right now the winds are up to about 166mph. On record it is the third most powerful hurricane to date.

Please let us pray that no major damage is done and everyone is safe.

Well considering we pollute the hell out of her I can't blame her for being pissed. That being said let's hope no one gets hurt.

hopefully this will wake bush up to the fact that we cannot afford to be invading other countrys for their oil right now. if a direct shot to his homeland ranch doesn't do the trick, i dunno what will. but we absolutely need to stop spending so much money on third world expeditions, and start spending more money on OUR people, and the catastrophys we've been bombarded with.

Right, The National Guard should of been there to help..but they're stuck in Iraq, and yes I know the National Guard still went in but they didn't have nearly as many as they should have.

Not to be so apethetic

But it seems always that our nation does not do anything until the worst comes to pass.

the motto seems to be "if it aint broke, dont fix it"

Where were the earthquake structured buildings before the Northridge Quakes of California?

Where were was the Homeland Security Position before 9/11?

Where were the protocols when the President declares states of Emergency due to Hurricanes?

How long will people ignore the word Preparation?

im not saying Live in Fear by living in perpetual changes of Terrorist Level threats.

Even the Japenese have a time Dedicated to Safety and preparation for things to occur.

I do a hard labor job and i get the word Safety in my ear all day long.

Again and again.

It's our own fault these issues are left behind until the worst happens.

Sooner or later i hope we can elect officials governors senators presidents that can see eyes open that the world around us is changing (ecology and culturally).

But until that time. I hope if people do value their families and friends they will take the necessary survival instincts they have and get away from that situation.

"If our will is strong enough then nothing can fail..."

#34400000295 09/21/2005 17:39:27 Re: Oh my god, Hurricane Rita
Worst of all, Bush hasn't veto'd a single spending bill since coming to power. A leader must make choices -- he can't -- so let's do a huge tax cut for his pals, Iraq, Katrina, everyone's pork all over the U.S., on and on. He went from zero debt to the largest increase in government spending in history.

We'll all end up working harder and longer hours to pay for everything -- since he can't choose.

My best to everyone down there. Be safe.

When someone told me about this I didn't fully comprehend what they were saying. I cannot belive two big Hurricanes hit inside a month. It's just terrible, shouts go out to everyone affected by the **bleep** that is Rita.

It just sucks....

This is the eighteenth hurricane this season.  It hasn't been this bad in a long time, but yes, we do have a season for hurricanes, and most of us are prepared.  Keep thinking happy thoughts.  Texas is very well organized when it comes to evacuations... thank goodness.

And there are two more months left in this season.  Last year Florida got slammed hard and now Katrina and Rita tear up the Gulf Coast.  I pray Texas isn't ripped as bad as LA and MS were.

Dont worry, texas has been hit before, and we're taking extra precations in the face of Katrina's aftermath.

Last year we had 3 big hurricanes here in FL, most of all those hurricanes (Rita, katrina, etc) already affected us in Miami Dade and Palm Beach.

The strengh of these phenomenons will increase gradually, blame global warming.

Actually, according to scientists

We haven't had any major Hurricanes since the 50's or so.

They are actually saying that is was actually about due.

We may be seeing more and more of these within the next 5-10 years

Wrong. There is a 30 year cycle in which the hurricane season goes from inactive to active. We happen to be in the active phase of the cycle right now. That is what the media doesn't tell you. They just can't wait to blame the evil GOP and the evil anti-environmentalists. (Hey I am all for environmental issues...but lets be reasonable ...some pollution in the atmosphere is not going to cause a 175mph storm)

I agree Calliente,
I'm in Dallas, TX
but I shouldn't be hit too bad, just t-storms and possible tornadoes afterwards.

However, I do have many, many, many friends/family that live in Houston and other areas along the coast.
I can only hope the best

For any players out there in these areas,
please be safe and think ahead....

I wish everyone the best of luck

hectic. I have a friend that goes to college in Beaumont, Tx so im
going to try and get in contact with her. Hope everyone stays safe.

Florida was hit by four hurricanes last year (Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne) and so far three this year (Dennis, Katrina, and Rita).

Rita is going to mess up Houston if it keeps on its current track--Houston will be in the worst part of the hurricane, the northeast quadrant.  The storm would then hit Dallas as possibly a weak tropical storm or, more likely, a strong tropical depression.

And keep in mind, hurricane season goes until Nov. 30.  The gap between Katrina and Ophelia and Rita is about a week and a half apart.  Up until now, meteorologists never believed it was possible for two category five hurricanes to follow each other so closely.  The rules are changing.  Hurricanes are forming earlier and stronger than ever and they are coming in tighter sequences.  Until last year, the idea of four hurricanes hitting Florida in the span of a few months was considered statistically nigh-impossible, but we've followed that up with three more hits this year with plenty of time for more to come.

Despite the risks for greater overall destruction here in California's earthquake country, I'll still take living here over anywhere where hurricanes can make landfall (although as the ocean warms up, some are predicting Eastern Pacific hurricanes will soon make it up to California), knowing the frequency and intensity are on the rise.

Considering
your post, I'm pretty sure major damage will be done, and I doubt
everyone will be safe.  Lets just say God is really pissed off at

#34400000314 09/21/2005 17:41:54 Re: Oh my god, Hurricane Rita
Katrina didn't really affect me, as I live in South West Louisiana.  We got a few new students and anice breeze for a while but thats it.  If this hurricane comes a bit more North...I art screwedeth.  looks like schools is letting out friday though SMILEY.  This thing really shot up after it entered the warm Gulf Waters.  It didn't seem like it was gonna get this bad until here recently.  It looks like I'll get some bad weather, but certainly not the worst of the storm.  maybe some electricity outage and a few downed trees here.  Who knows, good luck to all those who are gonna be getting the brunt of the storm...I am on the east side, which is kinda scary buut not the worst.  Soooo yea.
#34400000315 09/21/2005 18:05:07 Re: Oh my god, Hurricane Rita

I live relitavely near galveston...where the hurricane is expected to hit.  So far the hurricane has built up to a catagory 5 and is expected to plow through texas.  The hurricane is only growing stronger sitting in the gulf of mexico.  Right now most of the towns in the gulf coast are being evacuated.  All we can do is keep praying, and as for those affected in flordia, I hope everything is okay, but the damage is not near as great as what is to come.  This hurricane is about the size of the entire gulf coast of Texas and still touches part of Lousiana.

Be ready for more high gas prices...

I've now designated this the official discussion thread for Hurricane Rita. Let's keep the discussion friendly in respect for all those being affected by the impending storm.

Pardon me if I'm a bit distracted today. My brother and his family are evacuating Houston today and I'm a bit concerned.

All our thoughts here are with those currently in the path of Hurricane Rita, especially those already impacted by Hurricane Katrina.

#34400000322 09/22/2005 08:34:30 Re: Hurricane Rita Discussion
**bleep** Walrus, ill keep your family in my prayers, hope your brother and his family get out safely and dont suffer much, if any, property damage from Rita.
#34400000323 09/22/2005 08:37:44 Re: Hurricane Rita Discussion

Much thanks. My bro is a smart guy and he'll do what he needs to to protect his family. They've got friends up in Tyler who are going to take them in.

Just an update for anyone who hasn't read it yet: The governor of Texas ordered all southbound lanes of I-45 closed and converted to northbound traffic only for 125 miles outside of Houston. One bottleneck taken care of.

#34400000324 09/22/2005 08:40:11 Re: Hurricane Rita Discussion
Walrus, I'll be praying for you and yours my friend.
#34400000325 09/22/2005 13:26:09 Re: Hurricane Rita Discussion
I think I speak for everyone as a whole when I say we're thinking about
your fam Walrus, hopes and prayers go out with you and hope that not
only your family, but the rest of the people there get out safely, and
have the minimum damage possible once this thing is over.

#34400000326 09/21/2005 19:56:55 Re: Oh my god, Hurricane Rita
Well today (Wednesday), the school board at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville offically closed the campus until further notice. Luckly, I can go four hours up north to my home town and I don't have to stay in these dorms and suffer through this; Huntsville is suppose to get pretty bad storms- thunderstorms, very high winds, and possibly even tornadoes... I hope that everyone that has to stay on campus- as well as the 1000 evacuees that are to stay on campus- can stay safe in all of this. Also, everyone else in all of the other cities as well- be careful.

Again, be safe.  Let's hope this thing slows down soon

Some of us know that there is a Hurricane season, some of us don't. But from last season to now there has been tons of pollutions, TONS and guess what it is not stopping, It just gets worse and worse. Saving energy and beign conserative saves you money, makes prices cheaper, it is the right thing to do and you do not hurt anybody by doing it.

I just hope everyone makes it ok from Katrina's aftermath and stays safe during Rita.

#34400000333 09/22/2005 05:30:16 Re: Oh my god, Hurricane Rita

I'm in San Antonio, and the weather gurus are saying that by the time Rita reaches us, she'll still be a cat 3 hurricane.  Here's the major difference, though... Corpus Christi all the way up through Galviston is above sea level.  New Orleans was not.  We've had cat 5's before, but not in a long while.  We're stocking up on supplies just in case the electricity goes out, but other than that, we should be fine.  The biggest worry isn't the hurricaine itself, but the tornados that will spawn off of it.

I hate tornados.
