now i have tha AC97 on my motherboard and i use that since the sound card i have installed in my system does not seem to like me

yeah plat i got the exact same card but instead of crashing my comp just lags at 1 fps until i jack out because i cant even move.

1 fps is usually a sign of a misconfigured graphics driver, or another program seriously interfering with the game engine operating correctly. It's a little hard to diagnose without some more information. However, a clean boot can usually rule out software problems.

the AC'97 card compatibility issue is big among all game designers. AC'97 is a budget-minded, on-board implementation of a full-blown sound card. The problem with a sound card-on-a-chip is that you lose a lot of the multiple-sound capabilities,since the CPU spends a lot of time decoding sound files that an discrete sound card can handle with ease. If there were only one or two things causing sounds (like playing music while chatting on AIM with a buddy) the problem wouldn't be apparent. The CPU is not working all that hard on doing 2 or 3 sound effects almost simultaneously. But when you put in environment sounds, footsteps, battle sounds (usually with multiple triggers each) and background music, the AC'97 card can freeze. This does not happen with all AC'97 boards because not all AC'97 implementations are the same.

To truly get the most out of your sound experience, I would recommend a discrete sound card if possible. A solid Sound Blaster, or an older (and therefore much less expensive) Audigy card would be great. You don't need a brand-new X-Fi card, but a good sound card workhorse that keeps the multiplexing and decoding off of the CPU should clear your sound issues up.

I have an ASUS motherboard with AC97, but I'm using a Creative Audigy XGamer soundcard. However, I still get a complete system shutdown crash about once a day playing the game. I can play music, mp3's, other video games...nothing else completely shuts down my system. When I boot back up and check my processor/motherboard temps, they're perfectly reasonable, so it's not a shutdown due to overheating.

Is it enough to cause these system shutdowns just because I'm using a motherboard with AC97 (but am not actually taking advantage of it)? What will happen is, the game will suddenly hang, there will be this loud kind of beep noise from my speakers, and then the entire system shuts itself down. I'm considering buying a new sound card altogether, but the problem only occurs with MxO, so there must be some sort of configuration thing here to take care of this....I hope.

This definitely does NOT sound like a problem with the onboard sound device. however, if you would like to be certain, you may want to go into the Device Manager (Right-click on My Computer, choose "Properties" and then clik on the Hardware tab, and then Device manager) and scroll down to the Sound. Video, and Game controllers. locate the AC'97 card in this list, and right-click it. Choose "Disable" and restart the computer, then play MxO.
