Ok I bought MxO second hand (£3.99 woo!) however I don't know if the 30-day free trial will apply. I'm creating a new account and it's let me get as far as the cc page so I assume the old account was cancelled but is the free trial based on the account or the cd key? I don't really want to risk giving them my card details and choosing the billing method until I know whether or not I have the 30-day trial. Of course, I don't know whether the person sold the game after he used his trial or not so is there some way to check the status of my cd key?

If you got as far as credit card information, then the key was never registered before. Once a key has been registered, it is permanently on the account- it can't be removed, even by cancelling the account. Seeing as how you got that far, the free 30 days will apply. you do have to enter credit card or game card information to finish the account initializaion process, but you will not be charged until the 30 days are up, and you can cancel the account anytime by editing your billing information at https://secure.station.sony.com/mxo/
