Does anyone know why MxO in full screen mode seems to ignore and override whatever brightness/ gamma/ contrast settings etc I run, but in windowed mode it obeys fine?

I've noticed in Windowed mode the in-game gamma option disappears, so I'm thinking it's something that's it's been designed to do, rather than an out of game setting, but obviously there's a strong chance I'm wrong.

Is there any way to override the override?

Its not unheard of, at least it is an issue with EverQuest. I'm inclined to agree with this statement, it is probably set this way by design.

Any general solution to this?

On my PC, I have ATI Radeon 9600 128MB and even with full gamma and brightness the game is very dark in full mode. The latest drivers have also been installed/deinstalled without any difference in full mode. I have also installed modded drivers mentioned in one of these threads about gamma/brightness issues. but the final result is still the same. I do not have any problems with this in games like SWG, BF2,.....only MXO.

However, on my laptop with ATI Radeon Mobility card 64MB, the game does not have any problems with gamma/brightness.

Have you changed any of the Overlay settings in your Display Properties->Advanced menu? Most options for overlay apply only when a 3D application is running, and may override any application-specific preferences.

At this point I have rolled my driver on PC to Catalyst 5.2 version, since ATI cards have some game-stalling issue with SWG and it was recommended to roll back to old drivers (I have also disabled the color hotkeys).
My MXO ingame gamma/brightness is better now, all on default....but will tweak over the weekend and see if I can make it as good as on my laptop.
