I hear a lot of people saying that World of Warcraft is very successful and also that Matrix Online is dying.  I disagree with the fact that MxO is dying.

With regards to why WoW is so successful, it might have something to do
with the fact that there are so many more servers, a larger dev team, a
larger budget, better advertising, better customer support and that
they have at least 3 times as many people moderating the game.  Not to
mention the upcoming expansion,Burning Crusade, which will most likely
boost sales and subscribers even further.

WoW has been worked on for 6 years and has
had a tremendous amount of money poured into it for development.

Monolith Productions did not have near the amount of resources to put
into the game that Blizzard did, instead relying on the director,
producer and actors of the matrix movies to draw in fans.

Monolith also released MxO just as WoW was peaking in popularity.  As a
result the only two MMORPGs that people heard about were EQ2 and WoW.  I actually discovered MxO in February while browsing through betas of games to playtest and if I hadn't become a betatester I never would have even known about it or even played it.

The biggest hurdle that the Matrix Online has had to overcome has been the change over to SOE.  Aside from the community being totally against it, it looks like things are finally starting to improve.  Initially MxO's story was one of it's biggest selling points, along with it's live events.  Since they stopped releasing the story installments every two weeks, the game has taken on a new pace which seems like it has let the dev team spend more time working with the game.

Originally the focus seemed to be more on the story than on the game but now it seems like the devs are finally doing a lot to prepare stuff to keep players interested in between events.

Seems like the MxO has a lot of potential that hasn't even been tapped.  I think one of the best things MxO has going for it, is that it is not like World of Warcraft.

What do you guys think?  Is WoW better?  Is MxO dying?

I wouldn't say either. WoW is not better, and MxO is not really dying.

WoW is not better because well -- quite frankly, they have the worst community i have EVER seen in my entire career of online gaming. On the RP servers people will ask, "What is RP"

MxO: Well...I will our events used to be alot better, LET team did alot more (they're improving alot though, i'll give them that :smileyhappySMILEY. It's just MxO hit a rock for awhile and didn't move. We're picking up speed though. Sure, WoW has 10x as many people as we do. But their people SUCK! MxO Community is the best, dramatic group you'll ever find.

Lets not forget the decrease in population - that's why people are accurately saying MxO is dying.

What was there - 9 packed servers in the beginning?  Then there
was the XP nerf debocle right out of the gate.  Eventually, 9
servers became 3 servers, and now the servers that have been
consolidated are losing population.  I have characters on all
slots, every server, and I swear, Mara C is generally averages around
25 people now in Recursion.

way back when there was enumerator and line noise...back when mara was the starting point for missions and was always lagged because of everyone standing around.

Now theres just a few but you can have 3 characters on each server.  Mara on the other hand still has people around the same phone booth.

Well they used to have a dedicated Live Events Team.  Twitch and Aether used to be a big part of the MxO before SOE came in.  Anybody know what happened to these guys?  Did they get the boot or are they still around?  I know walrus is still around.

Aether is over at the beta for "Pirates of the Burning Sea" MMO due out.  He says "Hi" to everyone.

I'll be the first to admit how afraid I was of CR2 being the killing blow for MxO, for me at least. Now that SOE has firnly established their control and direction over our game, and consolidated for stability, one can only hope they will continue to develop the product with all the resources they have. Marketing dollars go a loooooong way for MMORPG's and from what I have seen so far, MxO has been undermarketed to the point of being criminal.

Hopefully, the huge corporate machine that is SOE will now turn their attention to recruiting new players for MxO and developing this game as a mainline product.

well from what I understand, the main story of MxO is already written and complete.  It's just a matter of releasing it.  If they were originally going to release the story every 2 weeks they must have had a lot planned, but if now its being released every month or two it seems like SOE is trying to milk us for every penny they can.
#12300000786 04/19/2006 18:11:27 Re: Blizzard and SOE discussion
MxO just needs to go back to beta for about 6 months and then re-release.

I don't think MxO is dying. But they need to advertise MxO more, and have a free trial of the game. The only advertisement i've seen for MxO was on the Matrix boxset, and at Wal-Mart on there tv's that advertise some of the products they sell in Electronics.

Dont insult me but I left WoW for this. Compared to WoW MXO has more of a small town feel, I know more of the people here then in WoW. In WoW small guilds can easilly pop up and turn into Big Name Guilds, in MXO there are only small guilds that you see alot.  MXO  has  Live Events(Whats left) WOW has billion different story quest(TOO MANY) I like to know alot about a world. WOW, Laugage Barrier, MXO I can insult everyone I see. MXO Guns lots of guns, WOW 1700 type guns that take 5 hours to load. RPing in MXO Cyberpunk movement, WOW, Fairys and magic(I have the power to kill you, I am the lord of you alll, Dude your lvl 10 and I am lvl 60 you cant even damage me.) MXO (I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, I am Neo, [You know what your an idiot], I am an Exile[Cool], I am a machine Program [Cool], I am a Zionist [At least your not saying your Neo])

ONe thing I hate about MXO the NEOISTS, THe ones with that use Main Charactor names that have no imagination to make there own charactor. WOW doesnt have a club seen or a real community outside of guilds.

I cancelled WoW. That game has way to many ignorant people roaming about. And the community......:smileyindifferent:
A real fantasy MMORPG is EQII. The  graphics are also what drove me away from WoW. I don't like my MMO's to be saturday morning cartoons.
#12300000800 04/26/2006 13:22:32 Re: Blizzard and SOE discussion
I played both the WoW trial, and I have many friends that swear by it...but in this market there are now two sci-fi games worth playing, MxO and Eve. Do you want to be on the ground or do you want to be in space, it the real question. The content of both games is created by the players for the most part. I, for one, choose the ground. I like this game quite a bit, and I see people everywhere on Recur...so I am pretty sure it is not dying.

Say what you want about MxO when it opened up but Anarchy Online still has the honour of the Worst Launch Ever. lol. :smileywink:

And the population here is slowly growing again in my opinion.
