Think it was one of the main hanging out locations in Beta. Camon C and Tabor W are said to be similiarly popular on specific servers.
U used to start there in beta, i think (when u first mad ur char )
and before the re-flow it was one of the random h/l`s u used to start at aswell

Because mara is the god of illusion, he who attempted to stop the buddha from reaching enlightenment.. thus mara, the person, and the place.. distracts us from the path to enlightenment.. and leads us on a path of destruction and blindness through violence.
or maybe not.
ruthless!
im always asking the same question... lol if its because of that illusion nonsense i find it funny theres a church right there.. but i think it was a good place to go with the vendors there and all but now that everyones lvl 50 now pretty much atleast from way back then i think it'd be cool to find a better location.. yesterday was kind of cool on vector there was a rather large pvp battle between the mervs and zionites that moved around it started around edgewater and moved to furihata and a few other places
It was the very very first hardline ever created. People don't like change
I remember that, back in beta, Stamos Northwest was popular as well. But crowds stopped hanging out there after the game was released.

I was told that Mara was the area that all the events took place around. So people would just hang there waiting for the next exciting thing to happen. Now ofcourse it can happen anywhere, I guess people just decided to make Mara the hot spot. Doesn't really matter to me, I shall not be a Mara bum much longer.
Ironically I was just talking about this with a friend today, and what's funny is in the fiction it states that mara is one of the most violent districts in the mega city and has become a 'free fire zone" since the truce was instated and another quote I find funny "Mara is a place best avoided if possible."
Wasn't that Uriah? :smileyindifferent:
It really wasn't the players who designated Mara as "the" hangout place, it was more the devs. Apparently, they used to hang out there in early Beta, and it was also the place that they used to show off the game for the first time at E3 a few years back (or so I heard). I can't remember if it was Walrus or Rarebit, but one of the devs said that they thought it was probably the most well-designed area of the entire game.

well mara is area that connects west view and downtown to richland... but maybe it the terrain i mean its got the high street right there for snipers a fence or the lower street or bach by the weapon vendor so spys can sneak up a building to drop in from well before uriah it was one of the best places to shop at a lower lvl has a club right there a church all you really need ever a few data taps close by if anyone really wanted 300 info and 50 xp
im guessin ur not on vector :smileywink:

Because they have "Neighborhood Watch". :smileytongue:

Most of the LET events in the old monolith days involved or were centered around Mara C at least in part. So a lot of older players hung around there. When you combine that with the local mission contact, the club, decent missions and Mara NW ((best place in the world to gank people who go there to get rid of DE)).
Since other's see people hanging around Mara it created a chain. In Vector this makes Mara the perverbial endless battleground.
Mara C and Stamos NW were so popular in Beta since they had Ability Vendors (which you could buy all abilities in the game from). After those were removed, only Mara lasted.
i go to camon c to stand around / RP and go to mara c to pvp. Its normally where the action is

DA
As many said there is past reasons...it was chosen by devs (well they started the trend) then the events where always there, then everything just developed from there. Also i agree with the best designed area of MXO.

And I don't. It's undoubtedly a great place with interesting structure and design, but please, come and convince me there aren't any place of equal quality in whole Mega City! And that even if only around hardlines.

He is from Vector, but look at his sig, he's zion. Hence the 'standing around'.
On vector, pvp can happen anywhere. I've fought battles in all districts. It's really more on the non-hostile servers that mara is the 'happening' spot. On vector, if you don't have the zerg, or you're not fighting those who do, Mara = death trap.
Mara's just the place you go when
1. You're bored and NOBODY is on.
2. You're about to jack out, so why not take a few down with ya.

One of the handbooks or guidebooks mentions hostilities in Mara.

I seriously think that it was just a habit that started in beta... I missed beta, so I can not confirm, nor deny such claims...
