Folks,

I'm currently engaged in some research into a possible story related
discovery, and i'm looking for some serious, constructive comment on a
particular topic...

In cinematic 2.1, Persephone tells Niobe that the Assassin takes his form because it is a joke to/for him.

Now, unless i've missed any in-game materials or community content, nobody has explored this joke, and the meaning behind it.

I'd appreciate any feedback you folks have; why is a figure made of flies a joke to him? What is the symbolism?

Thanks,

Rsync

I believe the term joke was used in a more derogative form.

Since that clip goes along the lines of, everything was created by
something/someone. He was made as a joke, to look like a joke.

I haven't looked much into the Assassin myself. And on this system I'm ill-equipped to.

From what I understand, the Assassin is a program used to recycle deceased blue pills.  There's a bit of irony in having him consist of a swarm of flies.  Corpses draw flies.

that's the way it's meant. Persephone calls him  joke because he is created by countless swarms, the smell and look of him makes him appear "lesser" than the more finely crafted Persephone and the walking french stereotype

Just means that "don't let his apperance fool you" i think...

Some interesting comments, certainly the corpses --> flies link is the most obvious.

Just hunting down anything that could be hidden, really.

When she said a "joke", I think it means this (I'm sorta restating what other people have said, but oh well):

The Asassin was a program responsible for recycling bodies in the Real World.  He was going to be deleted and replaced so he fled to the Matrix.  Turns out he's a bunch of flies, which are natural decomposers and are drawn to bodies.  The "joke" was more of a cruel irony, in my opinion, to remind him of what he used to be.

Just my thoughts.

The devil is known to be lord of the flies also there is a book Lord of
the Flies.  The term could mean that he is the devil's puppet, I
wouldnt say merovingian because the assassin only did the merv a favor
for smuggling him in, or could have something to do with the book

Interesting.

There are certainly lots of biblical references to flies.

Flood expected the Merovingian to have the Assassin at his disposal
permanently, however his was very wrong indeed. Documentation was found
that described a fall-out between the Merovingian and The Assassin; it
seemed that they were trying to use him as a permanent hitman.

I wonder whether we could be seeing rogue machine city AI escaping to
the Matrix; possibly with a view to influencing the situation to
destroy the truce and force Deus Ex Machina to kick-start the war
against humanity again. Almost like a faction to balance out the
Cypherites.

Just a bit of brain food.

The Assassin fled to the Matrix after the Machines Refused him the right to recycle Trinity's Body.

Here is the part about Trinity, he says something like I wanted to know why.:

Why was I scheduled for deletion? I think I know. My duties were wide,
as I was effective. I organized disposal in the hard world as well as
the Matrix. After the crash, it was I who marshaled the many-legged
tender units to dispose of the punctured corpse of Trinity. Yet it was
purloined by others, first. Tendrils still protruded from the soft
thing. They had sheared them. An odd device was on the body’s neck.
Obviously, a project was planned. I protested my exclusion. Repeated
usurpations of function precede deletion, it is widely known. My
protest was deemed offensive, I fear. Deletion loomed. I fled to the
Matrix.
