#11200004121 05/08/2006 08:01:02 Helicopter question
I was watching The Matrix last night with the "Critics" commentary.  I dunno, something about three faceless guys ripping my favorite movie to shreds really puts a smile on my face.  Listening to them put me in the mindset that the movie might not be all that great, and it helped me look at it more snidely.  Oddly enough, I have an even greater appreciation for the movie now.  But something occurred to me towards the end:

1 - Morpheus gets captured and is taken to the government building for interrogation.

2 - Neo and Trinity make it out of the matrix, and decide to go back in to save Morpheus.

3 - They load themselves up with guns... lots of guns, and a bomb to detonate inside the government building making sure no other authorities can enter.

4 - Neo and Trinity clear out the lobby, head to the elevator, set up the bomb, detonate it, and make their way to the roof via the elevator's pulley system.

Here's where I got a little confused.  The pair makes it to the roof, and dispatches the SWAT team and agent.  Neo decides it would be a good idea to make use of the SWAT helicopter and asks Trinity if she can fly it.  She replies coolly, "Not yet" before having Tank load her up with the necessary piloting instructions.

The thing that struck me was, how were they planning to save Morpheus if that helicopter wasn't so conveniently provided?  If the SWAT team had never brought the helicopter, Neo and Trinity would pretty much be stuck on the roof.  They had destroyed the elevator, and with the lobby consumed by fire, they'd have no way out of the building.  I guess they could take the stairs, but that would make for some boring movie watching.

If anyone can offer up a reasonable explanation/interpretation for this, I would appreciate it.

that about sums it up lol. Cause you can what if any movie to death.

The helicopter was already there when Neo and Trinity jacked in. That leads me to the assumption that the helicopter was a part of their plan -- or why would they want to go to the roof then?
#11200004127 05/08/2006 12:04:19 Re: Helicopter question
The original screenplay had an extra line or two where the Agents were getting all confused about where the attack was. The bomb in the elevator was meant to be a distraction to throw them off. Aside from that, I'd say they were just winging the whole thing and had planned on taking the stairs until they saw the helicopter.

Remember, they can see the feed, therefore they can see the chopper on the roof.

Yeah I was going to say that. They were obvously aware that morpheus was in the government building and like any good soldier, got intel on the area.

Then why did they not have the program to fly the chopper already loaded? Having Intel and not incorporatin it seems kinda like bad planning to me. I think they stumbled on it.

Its possible that it was the same case as MXO, a max number of abilities could be loaded at any one time.

Trinity exploited.  She wasn't near a hardline when she switched to the pilot loadout.  :smileyvery-happy:

During beta you didnt need to be near a hardline, though half the time it froze your mouse to use the vendors.

1. A distraction for the security forces in the building. Detonate bomb and cause response teams to go to the lower floors.

2. Use the stairs from the roof to go to where Morpheus is held.

3. Not everyone falls the 2nd time. :smileywink:

Sospechoso

It occured to me that the reason for the bomb might not have been as obvious as I thought.

I thought the bomb was meant to keep extra SWAT teams from entering the building, but I think it's just as possible that it was used to force them to come to the roof.  And what better way to get there than a helicopter?

Thanks for the input, guys.

The helicopter had already arrived there before Neo and Trinity even jacked in. You've probably seen it landing on that roof before the first cut to Morpheus' interrogation.

A length of rope to get down, an automatic rifle and the element of surprise to take out the agents, and hyperjump to get the hell out, but they decided to use the tools the SWAT team so kindly provided?

Weird. Went to reply to this, clicked Preview to prevent deletion, and ended up in General boards from 30 minutes ago. RUBBERBAND OF DOOM!

I was just about to say this. Remember the rope in the bag, the one that Neo used when Baldy couldn't make the jump? They probably planned to go down the side with guns blazing, then thought, "hey lol lets use this on them insted rofl we gonna pwn those noobs lol".

At least, I think that's what Neo thought. I think the One thinks in leet.

The super machinegun was part of the helicopter, as far as I understand it.
#11200004214 05/22/2006 13:34:07 Re: Helicopter question
That's commonly referred to as a mini-gun, in movies, though I am not sure what the actual designation of it is.
