So...what forum is everyone going to from here?

#36300565264 06/07/2009 14:07:35 So...what forum is everyone going to from here?

Since the MxO forums will be shutting down soon, I wanted to know if there's a particular fansite that the majority of the active MxO base will be using afterwards.  Stratics and Vault seem to be dead, and Rumbaar is almost deserted from what I could tell.

We'll probably want a place to form and advertise Redpill-run guilds for the major upcoming MMOs, as well as have a place to reminisce and host the screenshots that people are frantically compiling.

#36300565268 06/07/2009 14:20:19 Re:So...what forum is everyone going to from here?

I like the idea of having a post-DN1 forum for us to go to.

#36300565280 06/07/2009 15:10:15 Re:So...what forum is everyone going to from here?

I wouldn't mind having another DN1 forum. I visit this one almost every day to compensate for boredom.

You just never know if you're RP wife is a psychologically insane IC axe murderer. :/
#36300565281 06/07/2009 15:11:30 Re:So...what forum is everyone going to from here?

Definitely in favour of some sort of "official" home after this one closes down, whether it's one that currently exists or something yet to be created.

#36300565289 06/07/2009 15:38:31 Re:So...what forum is everyone going to from here?

I would sudgest making it somewhere that is independent of any player made/run. We all think its a good idea now but two years down the road what happens when the admin decides he doesnt want to pay for it/update it/ keep it spam free etc.

We have pages on Facebook and Myspace. I say use those as a hub if anything.

We could use proboards with several people stated  as admins.

Yea, it could be a free board.  I doubt anyone's going to care that it's not paid.

How about naming it "The Construct"?

#36300565304 06/07/2009 16:20:46 Re:So...what forum is everyone going to from here?

I'd care. I can't stand free boards.

There are several people - myself included - who have the resources to host forums, and have no reason to ever close them (i.e. the cost is marginal or nonexistent). It's then a matter of trusting that person to not show any bias. You'd have to deal with that issue wherever the forums are hosted though; there's always going to be one person ultimately in control.

#36300565307 06/07/2009 16:25:05 Re:So...what forum is everyone going to from here?

Well if anyone is going to put up such a board, I'd be more than happy to help out as a Moderator.

Though I did hear MxOMainframe forums were the place to be.

As do I.  I don't want to step on Mindsweep's contact list, but I think we also need a place to stick together as a community.  I believe it was Phrack who said that he regrets losing touch with people who have left the game long ago.  If we had a "post-MxO" forum then we can stick together, and hopefully there will be a specific place where long lost MxO friends can see us again.

Also, the MxO community seems to be one of the most active Matrix communities around.  I've been to Matrix forums like matrixcommunity.org, thelastfreecity.com, and matrixfans.net.  And while they're not inactive, they're no where near as active as this community.

We don't have to talk about MxO there if we don't want to.  We should talk about whatever we want.

Kinda sounds like you're volunteering Proc.  I don't mean to pressure anyone, but it is a time-sensitive decision before we all lose this place.

I'm not worried about a current player (well, most current players) being the administrator, as I imagine the only thing that would be deleted would be spam or over-the-line offensive stuff.  I'd be happy to help out as a moderator, and I imagine many other MxO veterans would be as well.

I don't want to lose this rare thing, this mostly-mature, almost-always-civil, more-diverse-than-you'd-think online community that shares my interests.  We have until July 31st to decide on a new Place (identify the subtle reference for a cookie).

With this I could not agree more, Tpaine.

I feel the greatest challenge which will present itself will be to:
a) Advertise whichever site (and / or) forum is decided upon sufficiently to each part of the community.
and
b) To sustain interest in said site (and/or) forum after its initial creation. Ensure that it is a place which it will be felt is worthwhile to check back to every so often, if not most days.

Something for all of us to consider while we search for a new home.

I'd be more than happy to host it, but us potential archivists need to work together in the initial stages or we'll all have our own disparate boards and fragment the community. I fear if I just go ahead and make a forum, it'll only be so successful.

Blackjack-18 wrote:

This is something we definitely need. I don't think it would be a good idea to bung the backup into the post-MxO board, though. As nice as it would be to essentially continue where we left off, these forums are huge and would put a serious strain on whoever hosted them if they were active. Far better to have the DN1 forums as a static archive, and have a separate, active post-MxO forum.

You've got your history wrong, mate. The original mxoboards was Jurymen's thing; it had to be shut down because his participation was a conflict of interest with his position on the DN1 forums. It was his forum, and I'm glad you wouldn't want to use his boards, because we (i.e. over 300 people from all three servers) had a lot of fun on those forums until they were shut down. I couldn't imagine what they'd be like with you posting your nonsense on them.

Not like it matters, because no one is forcing you into which forums to use. No one forced you to visit the DoE boards either (which is a terrible idea if you're from TC), where the administrators (of which I am not one) only come down on those who deserved it, like you -- usually for posting stupid stuff with no factual information to back it up, like your post above.

But obviously you have negative thoughts on the future of the community as it stands, so maybe it would be in your best interests to remove yourself from its future instead of bringing it to another forum, whichever it may be.

I've tried this using the mirroring/backup tool that SuperJenius pointed me to. The problem, as I see it thus far, is that it only backs up the main page of the forums.

I'm sorry, but I don't have the time to backup every single page of these forums. If someone wants to do it, the website copier program (freeware) is at http://www.httrack.com/. You install it, point it to the website you want to backup, and it downloads the whole thing to a folder on your hard drive. If someone can get the whole forum, I can host it and make the links work.

But it will only be a copy, I think. I doubt it will mirror the SOE forums engine and database. At least, that was my impression from using it for an hour or so.

So, my personal feelings is that Riac's site MXOMainframe is currently our best bet. It's already active, there's no 'bad blood' or history there so it's fairly neutral, and Riac seems like the type that will moderate fairly.

I've been meaning to give that program a proper go. But you're right: it won't back up the database, just the pages. And my guess is that it won't do it very efficiently. If someone manages to back it all up that way I could probably have a go at parsing all the pages and dumping it back into a database. It wouldn't be perfect, but at least we'd be able to navigate it more naturally and we'd get the search function to work.

Ok I really should wait to post this until I get the site redesign finished buuuut...

TLFC - The Last Free City

thelastfreecity.com

This forum has been around since the movies were released. It was originally, and fittingly thematrixonline.com, but Warner Bros. purchased the domain from the original owner. We've got 10 years of in-depth Matrix analysis, good discussion, original stories, and a good community.

A few years ago I took over as an admin and as lead web developer. I'm a professional user experience designer and web developer, and I'm working on an all-encompassing redesign of the forum, adding new features such as a blog/news front page.

The site has been there for 10 years and isn't going anywhere. All these faction websites and forums set up for the Matrix Online specifically may not last very long, who knows what the owner will do or when they will run out of funding. With TLFC, we've been here way before The Matrix Online and we'll be there way after The Matrix Online, guaranteed. It's run by Matrix fans, for Matrix fans.

I'd honestly love it if you guys would come over and make TLFC your home, like it's been my one true internet home since seriously 2003. I want to keep seeing your great Matrix stories, pictures, comics, and just general discussions.

P.S. We have a very loose TOS and only ban people for deliberately trying to disrupt the forum badly. Other than that, and disgusting stuff, most things are all good.

P.P.S. I also own www.zionarchive.com and I would like help setting this up as an archive of the complete Matrix story, including the Matrix Online.

Wow and apparently it has jumbo fonts!   Loud Noises!

Not sure about The Last Free City. Sounds nice and it doesn't seem like it's going anywhere, but it's a different community. Would the migration of the MxO community to the LFC community really work out? The MxO community is distinctive; we know each other, we have our own RP and the like. Cohabiting with another community wouldn't work out too well if you ask me. It wouldn't be a natural place to, say, continue our RP (for those who care).

Great for general Matrix stuff, but not for MxO.

Hmm... for some reason I remember disliking TLFC at some point. MxO hatin' or something. Maybe that was somewhere else though, I dunno xD

This was around the time I was looking into spreading my wings to more general Matrix fan sites, hoping to spark interest again based off the story developments at the time. I ended up on MatrixFans2007 which was derived from some other site which was big in the day but got took over by spam bots.

Problem with generalised Matrix sites is a lot of fans shun the continuation as depicted in the games. Which is, you know, what I'm all about. lol.

I think there will always be someone or some group that will be against certain people rurning a forum, because ultimately, unlike these boards it is VERY likely to at some point have a unfair baised reaction, and you can't blame people for thinking that.

So I believe the whole community will flood to a single board? nope, just like the Matrix itself, we will end up in our own little pockets of resistance, these boards were our Zion.

MxO Mainframe doesn't look too bad, but regardless of any problems I know I've had with Symm in the past, I know he would run fair and equal forums. I'll jump around a few forums and see where people end up mostly, but I think like many I will have my own "home" forums, in my case being the Fallen Horizon forums.

So what might be a better idea is for a vote on which forums the community would prefer to class as our new "Zion", as it were, and then list your own remote base locations, so if people wish to stop by those places, they can.

Actually Riac runs that not Symm.
