So alot of us seem to be either just starting or just about to finish up college. I was wondering what kind of fields others are studying.

So what's your concentration and what do you plan on doing after graduating?

I'm about finished my two year but I have to transfer right away to the four year college so though It will feel like a accomplishment, I will have to basically do another two years right after. I'm studying Forensics and Criminal Justice, concentration in Crime Scene/Forensics. My final this week is for fingerprinting.. and man it's hard.

I want to work in federal law enforcement either FBI or NCIS. I hope to have a internship in a year and a half  at either the FBI or NCIS.

On the back of some travel, in September '10 I will be studying for a degree (finally - I'm the wrong side of 25) in Creative Writing.  Depending on how that goes, I'm considering following it with a Masters.

I've never been a cutthroat career-minded person, so my hopes for a job afterwards involve lofty dreams of becoming a writer, and more realistic goals of freelancing and/or work for non-profit organizations.

Go for writer.  Do something you love atleast try so you can say you atleast tried dont settle for a "realistic" job.

You're absolutely right, and I do plan to pursue writing as a primary goal.  I'm just not leaving it to 'fate' or all those other otherwordly things people believe in to decide for me whilst I sit on my asss scribbling and waiting for it to happen.  Call those 'realistic' jobs my bankroll towards writing.

Thanks for the comment - it's always good to hear it not just from a modest hope, but from someone else, too.

That's awesome, I'm sure you'll find a job there are many market's out there for writers.

Good Luck with that!

Well, most folk know by now that I'll be doing a Football(Soccer) Scholarship over in America for a maximum of four years. So, becoming a Professional Footballer is the ultimate goal. With that said, I will still be studying academically at whatever uni I decide to go to. I'm hoping to study in Creative Writing also, however, the thought of doing some graphic design has crossed my mind. Whatever scholarship offer I take up, it looks unlikely to be one offered this year due to lack of funds.

In between this and next summer I'll most likely be doing a one year course at college called Football Performance, which involves 4 days a week of training and lectures from current managers and ex-pros. Seemed to me like a good gap filler.

And if all that goes t1ts up? I'll get into coaching of some kind.

Just graduated with a bachelor's in Graphic Design, and putting it partly to use working at a popular finance website.

I remember once wanting to go down the Criminal Justice/FBI career track; but somehow changed my mind and I live that only by reading my murder-mystery books. SMILEY

Not sure why it's a passion of mine even back in high school I always wanted to join the FBI

My friend does graphic design and that is a really cool field too, I wish I knew how to do that.

Do not get a BA in History!  It's a worthless degree, trust me, I know!!

#36300563122 06/03/2009 21:04:31 Re:College and You: What are you studying?

SS Ed is a decent career path since you can get any SS job at a school and if you're not satisfied there, you can move on to do a masters in any of the fields under the umbrella (including Economics and Psychology, which are fairly valuable)

I'm going into my third year for my BA in English Education, myself. Aww yeah, Shakespearean Drama.

#36300563133 06/03/2009 21:23:10 Re:College and You: What are you studying?

Just finishing my third year of physics at UCSB. Not fun at all.

Took general relativity, cosmology, and classical mechanics II this quarter, along with late modern philosophy. Was also taking observational astrophysics but had to drop it.

I'm more interested in engineering but I thought the physics degree would be more marketable. Hopefully this summer I'll be continuing work in robotics and AI development though.

#36300563145 06/03/2009 21:53:57 Re:College and You: What are you studying?

Graduated in December with a B.S. in Radio/Television, Broadcast Journalism.  I'm still contemplating grad school, nothing for certain yet.

I wouldn't mind teaching for a bit either.

#36300563153 06/03/2009 22:05:54 Re:College and You: What are you studying?
I'm majoring in Mechanical Engineering and am going to start my 2nd year this fall.
I could have a minor in math next semester, but they don't let you minor in that when you are majoring in ME >_>.......

Congratulations, Arch! It sounds like a degree which would very much suit your personality, if I may say so. Which is an immeasurable positive since I feel there is no greater job, vocation or pass - time in the world than doing that which we love.

As for myself; after having completed a 1st Year of Biochemistry and Pharmacology with a specialisation in Virology... I decided that there was far too much Mathematics and Chemistry and not enough study of the Biological systems which I so loved. Also; that I could not envisage enjoying a career in science.

... which is when I discovered that the thing which I spent the majority of my free time investigating, researching and interacting with was actually taught at quite a few institutions under the name of Sociology.

A degree in it means I get paid for RPing and playing MxO IRL :3

Of this, I have just finished my 1st Year at a University here in Scotland, with which I am in love and about to spend the Summer working in my second home of Simcoe in Canada.

This year's subjects consisted of:

  • Sociology. (Major. Personal focus on: "The definition of Sociology and limits to Sociological thinking" and "Contemporary Media and the Inherent Biases Thereof".)
  • International Relations. (Minor. Personal focus on: "The theory and 'Real World' applications of the 'Balance of Power'" and "International Monetary Fund and the World Bank."
  • (Transferred from Economics to) Anthropology. (Minor. Personal focus on: "Captain Cook and the interpretation of 'First Contact' situations." "Agreeability of the 'Original Affluent Society' theory as put forward by Marshal Sahlins".)

Although the standard degree of Sociology is not always considered as representative of personal capability or achievement in itself, I am hoping to take the basic Masters degree to Post - Graduate level and then onto either research or internship.

Very smart move with the Robotics and AI.   That is the field I am trying to move too.

War is just as good at creating new tech as it is at killing people.  At the start of this War there were 300 robots in Iraq/Afghanistan.  Now there are over 10,000 and around 6,000 UAVs.  Its getting to be like terminator for the other team and we are skynet.

But every war brings us a new tech or two .  The last golf war helped bring GPS and Digital Cameras to the forefront.  Now everyone and their grandma has one of those and they are about the size of a iPod.  So I predict in 6-8 years you will start seeing the tech from this war seep into civilain markets.  Look for WideBand on the Go to be installed in Cars.  Its pretty sick what it does for the troops here.
