I'm a machinist. Recently I've been grinding merv on Syntax, so I can do the mishes for the Web Blouses (from the collector in Ikeburoko). Now I am up to 21 rep. My Machine and Zion rep are at "minimum".
However, I still flag as "Machines". And the Merovingian collectors won't give me the time of day!
So, if I have a merv rep of 21 (soon to be 31) and want to rate as merv for the mishes in Hampton Green and Ikeburoko, what the heck am I supposed to do?

If your in a faction or crew you will still be flagged as machine maybe thats whats keeping you machine.

It's a good point. I dropped tag and everything, with a merv rep of 21, and still flagged as mech.

Did you also leave your crew? Just leaving your faction is not enough if you are still in a Machine crew.

A good way to get you and your faction into the other org hallways though 
You should flag merv when your rep is + and the others are - so thats quite weird. I think to start the new missions, you need a rep of about 30 for the starter mishs, 60 odd for the last set. And yeah thats to talk to the collector aswell (i'v had to run mishs for people not meeting the rep.)

I left my mech syntax org, but remain a captain of my ship. My rep's still at 21. Maybe I just have to grind my way to 30+...

I'm pretty sure you need to disband your ship before you can become a Merv.

When you create your crew, you specify what org it is. As long as you remain in a machine crew, you're a machine. I believe /reputation will tell you your current "allegiance". Dump the crew / remake the crew (you're +16 rep so it shouldn't be an issue)
Commander, many thanks to and everyone else who responded. I dropped my crew and immediately acquired the merv's tag. I'm already feeling more self-indulgent...
