I see those pictures with all of that sand, and the only thing that comes to mind is the trailer for Terminator Salvation.  Count yourself lucky that you weren't attacked by T-800's while you were out there.

San Diego is lovely, you get the wonderful climate of Southern California with a lot less sprawl/traffic as, say, Orange or Los Angeles or Riverside County.  If you have to live in So Cal, you could do a lot worse than San Diego. 

(Also, no hellish humidity!)
