Sound Problem. No Sound Effects

Hi All.. I decided to come back and spend christmas in the matrix.. however after installing and updating when i play the game it starts with sound effects and no music.. and then if i go into the options and deselect and then reselect 'in game music' it plays the music but NO sound effects.. which to then revert i have to restart the game.. any help would be much appreciated. running Vista Ult
