Bioshock is still rated as my #1 game of all times. Let's see how they do with this one. Great teaser.

I just completed Bioshock a few weeks ago, great game! Number two should be good.
#36300511126 10/16/2008 17:46:23 Re:Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams
The second one has a lot to live up to, but I can't wait to see what they do with it!

It's a bit "meh" to me, though I like the speculation that you get to play as one of those Sister thingies..

My roommate and I were wildly speculating about playing as a 20ish year-old Little Sister returning to the city, but the counter-argument was that leaving the city with the Little Sisters was only one of the two possible outcomes of the first Bioshock. The other (which is not the outcome I played) was taking control of the city and the splicers, or so I'm told. This caused me to optimistically hope that the start of Bioshock 2 would have the protagonist either returning to the city or defending the city, at which point the two openings would merge into one continuous storyline. But that doesn't really seem like a direction they would take things.

What we're really hoping for is some sort of Cold War era battle for control of Rapture. Basically, as long as there's Soviets and Big Daddies involved, we're happy.
#36300511143 10/16/2008 19:31:51 Re:Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams
Bioshock is my favorite single-player game of all-time, so I am looking forward to the sequel.

Still pondering how a follow-up would make sense...

I'll get back to ya when I find a logical answer.

#36300511187 10/16/2008 21:58:48 Re:Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams

Yeah, I really can't see how they can pull a sequel off.

I mean, I liked the single-player. I liked the big "*shocker*" moment (huh, can't even say Where's The Food, anymore. What have these forums come to.) when you realize what you were really doing this whole time. The story was great, and at the same time pretty creepy as it should be. It's just somehow this game is going to come down with, "The original was great, but now it's meh." syndrome. I mean the only other "twist" I could probably imagine being feasable without being cheesy (like, hurr more mindgames) is the city Rapture having some hidden "higher" purpose rather than just being a home for the enthusiastic scientist.

And of course there's the annoying over-hype that's doomed to come with BioShock 2.

Gotta love how an originally planned 360 exclusive not only goes to PS3, but PS3 get's a PS3 only trailer.

<3 corporations.

as for all the people asking how a sequal is possible...

Many a tralier have been quite misleading.

It could be a hint at the plot and only that.

Nice! I loved the BioShock on PC. Hopefully the sequel lives up to the first.
#36300511221 10/17/2008 02:17:34 Re:Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams
I thought there were rumours a few months ago that it was indeed a prequel.
#36300511247 10/17/2008 04:22:22 Re:Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams

Let us see where this goes.

The original BioShock was pretty good. Way, way overhyped though, and the last couple of levels I kinda skimmed my way through and sadly never felt compelled to go back and do properly. I may play it again while I wait for GTA IV or Mirror's Edge, now that I can see it in DX10 mode.

I sincerely hope they fix the console dumbed-down-ness of the first.

#36300511295 10/17/2008 07:50:57 Re:Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams
Rumors are that it is going to be a prequel and a sequel all in one, which would explain the older little sister.

Also, has anyone even considered that this person on the beach might not be a little sister? Seriously, hear me out here...

We know at the end of Bioshock that one of the endings was that you saved them, they grew up, found love, married... and had kids...

What if the person we see is not a little sister but a daughter of one?

I did a news story on this a month or so ago, sources could have been wrong at that given point.

I loved the two endings, was an odd thing to rescue them. More ADAM, MORE.. Harvest them I say.

This makes me think you're an idiot.

Dumbed-down-ness?

Bioshock is one of the best games I've played in 20 years.  Just because you prefer PC to console, doesn't mean conosles are dumbed down.  Don't be ignorant.  Bioshock was more indepth than 90% of the PC games I played last year.  Actually all console titles are more indepth than most PC titles coming out.

(And pssst, it came out for PC too)

+1 Forum CQ point.

I don't get console haters. And most of their arguments of not beable to be as accurate on a console is 100% pure farmgrown BS. Only difference for a console, is I get to play it on my 42'' LCD 1080i HDTV SMILEY

Yeees, I know it came out on PC. I played it on PC. /facepalm

My point is that it was too simple. Everything was too simple. No inventory management, few stats, eating food as soon as you picked it up, Vita-Chambers... everything. Compare that to a PC original like Deus Ex or System Shock 2 (to which BioShock is often compared, never favourably). Deus Ex 2 got the same treatment: they brought it out for consoles, and in the process removed half the features so the poor console gamers didn't get confused. As Yahtzee puts it: 'If you got the Xbox version where they're used to insipid boom-fests like Halo then BioShock will seem [awesome], but if you're a long-time PC gamer spoiled by more complex FPSRPGs then you're in for a kick in the [mivonks].'

It's only very recently that developers have realised they don't need to make things too simple for console gamers and have started to be a bit more clever in their approach.

Tell me, what were these 90% of PC games you played last year? Remember, they have to be a similar genre to BioShock or they don't merit comparison. If they were just plain FPSs (which aren't meant to be complicated) then I'll laugh.

I hope you're ranting (somewhat off-topic) about console haters in general and not me, 'cos I said nothing about aiming accuracy. And I reckon my 24" 1920x1200 LCD monitor outdoes most TVs, however big they are. The bigger the telly, the bigger the pixels (which is a bad thing) and the further you have to sit back from it. I choose... Rapture!

The first time your sphere hovers over the city while a brilliant score pounds away through your speakers... it never stopped to amaze me. The atmosphere in the game, the over-the-top use of the neon signs, every room just breathing out that 50's-era. I never got why people found the game to be scary, but when it comes to atmosphere I have yet to find a game that impressed me that much. Combine that with music from artists like The Inkspots, Bing Crosby, Perry Como and Coel Porter and it made Bioshock into the stuff legends were made of. Yes it was hyped, so hyped... but it lived up to it.

Crysis.

Not just a plain FPS.
Not an RPG FPS by any means, but PC gets few of those.

I also never said anything about genre. I said PC games. You're running out of reasons to argue and simply saying that they have to be the same genre. I laugh at you.

Mass Effect, 360 then to PC, beat any game that was purely a PC game.
Assassin's Creed, Console THEN PC.
EA skate. One of the best control systems in any game to date.

Some older ones.

Halo, sure it's full of 'BOOM HEADSHOT' kids, but guess what - console game ported to PC where the console game was still better.
Gears of War. Console game ported to PC in which it's still played more on console and beats a TON of PC only FPS story lines.

Your arguments lack sustenance, your sentiments are perfectly precise in their simplicity.

#36300511627 10/18/2008 08:40:41 Re:Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams
Diddums, read carefully. I know you said PC games, but I'm talking exclusively about FPSRPGs and their ilk. We're not comparing console games to PC games, we're comparing console FPSRPGs to PC FPSRPGs. You can't justify the argument that BioShock isn't dumbed down to cater for consoles by talking about completely unrelated games. As I said, they do not merit comparison.

But no, let's run with it anyway. You mention Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed. These are covered by what I've already said: 'It's only very recently that developers have realised they don't need to make things too simple for console gamers and have started to be a bit more clever in their approach.' Got it this time?

You and Bruinz seem to want to turn this into yet another console vs PC thread. Stop it. That was never what I was getting at. I said they dumbed down BioShock for consoles. They did. Just like they dumbed down Deus Ex 2. They did not, however, necessarily dumb down other games, e.g. Mass Effect.

If it is a prequel as I have heard most sources say it will be, I can't wait.  I'm looking forward to exploring Rapture in its prime and marvelling at the atmosphere.  And then slowly watching its demise.

That may seem sinister but hey.
#36300511674 10/18/2008 12:23:46 Re:Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams
Or it could be someone with the intellectual intregrity of Ryan wanting to rebuild Rapture.

Just like they dumbed down Deus Ex 2. They did not, however, necessarily dumb down other games, e.g. Mass Effect.Ok, since you don't care to think, I'll put this in plain terms.

Firstly - Bioshock is not a FPSRPG. It has elements of gameplay such as upgrading your weapon and abilities, but that does not make it a RPG. Where do you roleplay in the game? It is a first person shooter, pure and straight up. It is not dumbed down in any form. It was never meant to be a game such as S.T.A.L.K.E.R with inventory management or anything similar to that. If anything, talking about Mass Effect is a direct comparison to the genre YOU believe Bioshock to be in. Regardless, I never once said I was talking ONLY about FPSRPG, you cannot put words in my mouth and expect me to not call you out on it.

Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed are new games which are not dumbed down at all, correct. You forget that there have been games since NES which are to this day some of the most in depth games around via story and gameplay. Let's make a list, shall we?

Final Fantasy VII.
Grand Theft Auto series. (Incredibly in depth for a simplistic 'Shoot 'em up.')
Legend of Mana.
Secrets of Mana.
Final Fantasy IV.
Let's just go ahead and say nearly every RPG(RPG RPG RPG RPG RPG RPG RPG RPG RPG ) on the market since NES.

In all actuality I could sit here for days comprising a list to suite your needs, but it would be such a waste of my time.

Also, they didn't dumb down Bioshock for consoles, and have a superior version released for PC.

IT CAME OUT ON 360 FIRST. It was meant to be the way it was. IT WAS A FIRST PERSON SHOOTER, NOT A RPG.

This thread is old.  Read dates.

No, it is not an expansion.  I mean, you could consider it an 'expansion' onto the story, but consoles don't have expansions like PC games.  So more than likely it will be a prequal with a new engine and new gameplay mechanics.
