So, I've been catching up a long time player on the storyline who may be coming back to the game.  During this convo, I realized that no one really died in MxO.  I mean even Morpheus came back as a sim.  Agent Gray was disabled, but came back only a few days later.  Which confuses me because he can't return to the source due to being infected with the Smith virus.  The only major character that really died in MxO is Agent Skinner.  Danielle Wright was "dead" but she came back.  Whenever a character "dies", he/she always comes back in one form or another.

I think this has to do with the big upset that happened whe Morpheus was killed in Chapter 1.3.  I understand why Rarebit and others would be reluctant to kill off a character because of the upset that did happen with Morpheus.  But at the saame time, this whole "revolving door" with character's mortality just seems alittle too DC/Marvel Universe to me.

Can't we have a character die and actually stay dead?

It's a good plot device for if you want to ever bring a character back. I don't like it though, some people need to stay dead.

Anome's pretty dead, though. He fall down go boom.

I've heard it said many times that in a world where reality is subject to questionability, even death is relative... Exiles and programs aren't alive the way humans are, so it's easier to restore them, like pulling up a back-up fileon a computer or using a System Restore.

That said, I do get tired with players killing off their characters and then pulling ways out of their ears, to bring them back to life, unless they made that "death" ambiguous to begin with.

Yea, but even the reboot has to make sense.  Like with Agent Gray.  As far as I know, in order for a machine program to reconstruct, they have to return to the Source and get a new shell.  The only way Agent Gray could've rebooted and not return to the Source if the machines had a back-up Gray on file.

Isnt the Oracle deed?

Hopefully she stays dead :o

But, again she's a program so she could come back.

We've not seen too many major storyline character deaths but a fair few minor ones. I remember one death in particular was Strenlo, he was in love with the unlimit 'Phinney', and he was killed when the Machines got a hold of Zions RSI signatures.

Personally, I think we're due another major death from a human character but the frequency of which they are killed off has to be very low.

The problem with killing off old characters that people recognise is that then the game will lose touch with the movies and new players will be like 'this isn't the matrix omg, where is niobe and the merv who are these faceless zion characters' or whatever.

Also, in before 'this game has already lost touch with the movies'

The Oracle has taken a new shell before, and she will no doubt do it again. It's not that hard to believe if she shows up looking different.

Off-topic, but here for the sake of argument: it's sort of like people's reactions to Frank Herbert's "Dune" novels after he started writing about Paul Mu'ad-Dib's descendents. Granted, there's a canonic way to "resurrect" people via cloning (think of the ghola versions of Duncan Idaho through the entire series), but it does get a little... not silly or redundant, but for the people who want to see the familiar characters resurrected, there's going to be people who'd rather see them stay departed.

Sorry, I should have clarified. SMILEY I meant that characters like Niobe or Ghost are left untouched and don't seem to be in too much of a threat of being killed because potential new players might feel like they've lost touch with the movies and won't sign up. I didn't mean to come accross as justifying constantly resurrecting characters because i agree, that just gets completely dull. Frankly, I prefer to see someone that's dead stay dead.

Problem is, MxO was always billed as the official continuation of the Matrix storyline whether some people like it or not. Life changes, people move on. Lock is no longer in charge of the Zion military but he was never seen in the Simulation, The Oracle is (supposedly) dead and she is really the only character, other than Morpheus, from the movies who's died. How can a story (regarding the characters involved) really move on when it's being pulled back due to the identifiable characters from the films most of the time?

I understand that new players would want to have something to identify MxO to the movies, but that's what I believe the Archives missions can do, no matter what has happened to which character currently they'll always be in the archives. So a new player turns up and there have been lots of changes, what do they expect? It's been years since the last movie came out and MxO continues the story, it's not based during the movies like SWG, but with the Archives they can catch up.

It really is like a TV series at the moment when most of the cast are in peril often but you know they're not going to die. But I suppose with main characters killed off, many people may just decide not to follow it any more rather than get to know new characters.

I guess it's finding the balance. Personally, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if we had some more iconic movie characters dead. Ghost or Niobe maybe but even with reluctance to kill them off we still have the likes of Malphas, Ookami, The twins, Colt, The Kid, Veil, Cryptos and Shimada to kill. So, there's a fair selection.

One thing Rarebit pointed out at Fan Faire was that he has built some of every characters reactions and actions up from speaking to our own characters and situations in events. He'd probably have to spend some time doing that with new characters and it might take another couple of years to do so and that might get a little distracting.

Anyway, in short, I agree with what you're saying. I was just thinking from the other side of the coin.

I don't know about the RP aspects, but if you die in PvP, you die IRL.
