The man walked out calmly from the building doors into the cool night before pulling the detonator from his pocket. Looking back he pressed the red button and with a sigh of resignation watched as the explosions of the offices and the doors blew out in a fireball.

Pocketing the detonator, he took a few more steps to the phone booth looking back every once in a while at the destruction he was walking away from…the destruction he created.

He stepped in the booth even as he heard the emergency alarms from the building while he put the quarter in the slot and dialed the number.

“Operator”

“It’s done”

“Already?”

The man grimaced as he pulled of the bandanna “yeah” he said “the watchmen are tied up and stowed in a safe place. No other workers were there. No body count, just a lot of broken glass and fire. Did you take care of the security?”

The voice on the phone answered quickly “yeah, security system was down when you got in, no cameras, no pressure sensors, nothing. Not a bad operation considering the short time we had to put it together.”

“I’ll say” said the man in the booth and he turned around at the familiar sounds coming through that were confirmed by the operator.

“Looks like the sent a bomb squad, fire and rescue and probably a ton of Agents just for old times sakes” said the Operator with a chuckle “you got about 4 minutes tops”

“More than enough time” said the man in the booth “you got a hardline set up?” “Yeah” replied the operator “between Stanton and Jacobs across the street from the park.”

The operator paused a moment and then said hesitantly “look, I don’t want to sound like a worry wart but what don’t you think this guy is gonna be out for blood? I mean we just blew up his offices.”

The man in the booth chuckled as he heard the sounds of the sirens become louder “well” he said “he might be angrier at himself. I mean sending us a note with the address of his offices wasn’t exactly the smartest move to make, especially considering the situation. No one is dead and the most he lost was a few offices which I’m sure the insurance will pick up; this is just a message to back off. Besides all he has is suspicion, it’s not like we are posting this on a website for him to see or something.”

The voice in the other end chuckled and said “true, hey you better get moving, they are just a few blocks away.”

“Right” said the man in the booth “see you soon” and hung up. He walked away from the destruction thinking of all the possible outcomes to this and then shrugged inwardly, realizing that it didn’t matter really. They were here to stay and he would do everything to ensure their survival in the Matrix as well as in the Real, as far as the death threats…

The man chuckled to himself quietly as he turned the corner and said lowly “so how’s that different from any other day ?”
