It looks really good, judging by the trailer that is.

It made my "To See" list anyway.

Actually looks like a pretty decent remake. I own the original on DVD. I saw that scene with Keanu being questioned and I said, "This looks familiar. Heh.

Ah well, they better leave the phrase "Klaatu barada nikto." in the script. That's a staple of sci-fi history.

Nice! The original is an all time fave..this should be good.

Holy *poop*!

I always liked the original and enjoyed the recent similarities with Korea and the US. The new one should be very interesting. And the SFX look sweet.

Should be good as long as they don't give too many lines to Keanu.

interesting side-note... I notice that for once the computers in the movie aren't macs... You can see one running Vista in the trailer

It looks close enough to the original to pick up on the right themes... but Keanu seems a little more aloof in this one.

The original needs some reworking to fit it to modern times.

Yah true, adjustements to the current times is okay. But if they're starting to make a sort of alien romance out of it or an action movie, my worst fears. The trailers still looked fine, though.

Instead of a nuclear war message, its giving out an environmental message... I guess that message is, like in the Happening....

DEATH TO HUMANS SO PLANTS MAY RULE!

#36300527203 12/08/2008 18:34:48 Re:Keanu Reeves the Day the earth stood still.

Looking forward to this.

Keanu is always awesome when all he has to do is look into the camera with a half stoned empty stare and say maybe one word.

Just seen this AND WILL WATCH IT AGAIN...   ... Great Movie and story.

Although I have no Idea as to what the original 1951 movie was about other than that big robot popping out, this movie pique my interest into saving our environment AND our humanity... which I believe is what they are trying to suggest.

We are just passing through this planet anyways as it was NEVER ours to take.

Sweet!  I'm glad it got the mantra777 Seal of Approval. SMILEY  I've got tickets for 10pm tomorrow night, I'm going with a group of 5-10 other friends.

Can't wait!

#36300528616 12/12/2008 14:49:55 Re:Keanu Reeves the Day the earth stood still.

It doesn't seem like they are keeping to the original at all. The original with it's premise only worked in it's time, post-WWII, a direct remake with the same premise would fit oddly in our society unless it were made as an emulation of the 1950s, but it isn't. I just hope Keanu has made a good choice - I'm watching this in IMAX.

The concept that we're on borrowed time is always an interesting one to visit in science fiction. As soon as I can get around again, I'll check it out.

#36300528778 12/13/2008 04:59:51 Re:Keanu Reeves the Day the earth stood still.

Minor spoilers in the pros and cons below, nothing significant to the story.

Pros:

Gort is completely awesome.  Steals every scene he's in.  Matrix fans will likely smile when they see what he's made of (not revealed until the third act).

Keanu Reeves is pitch perfect for this interpretation of Klaatu.  Except for Gort, he darn near carries the film.

CGI and practical f/x are for the most part pretty good.

It's not overly preachy with the environmental crap.

Pacing is great, it's not wall to wall action, it's more about tension and suspense, but you'll never get bored watching.  110 minutes seemed to fly by for me.

John Cleese.  Nuff said.

There's a scene which prominently features a Windows Bumptop (I still maintain that the beta incarnation is impractical for any business application).

Wolverine trailer was great.

Cons:

You will want to slap that kid within 30 seconds.  A spoiled brat who's insolence is solely attributed to the overused broken home excuse.  Plus he plays Wow, so he's fail from the moment he appears on screen.

Sadly, WoW gets a good 30 seconds of screen time, some of it full frame(ish).

Much of the story only works if everyone in the movie is an idiot.  Why do people in movies always behave as if they've never been to the movies, watched TV, listened to the radio, or read any fiction?  Haven't these people seen ET or Star Trek?  Do the names Wells and Gibson mean anything to them? In the forties and fifties when this was all new territory, you can almost buy that someone is stupid enough to fire a gun at an alien, but NOW?  whiskey tango foxtrot

Way too many changes to the plot, changes that either didn't work or were unnecessary.  If you're going to futz with the plot, make sure you're doing something logical or leave it alone.  Hong's cameo is utterly pointless for instance, and there's one totally random and weird scene somewhere in the midsection which I have yet to figure out.

The score is forgettable, the cinematography nothing special.  That tracking shot of the two motorcycles in the T4 trailer is more impressive than any shot in this film.  More importantly though, the director is quite obviously inexperienced.

With the changes to the story, Kathy Bates' character's actions and dialogue make no sense.

There's a line missing from the script.....

It's easily not as good as the original.  On its own, its mediocre at best.  I'll never understand why they keep remaking good films into bad ones when there are so many bad films that could be remade into good ones.

It makes sense, but I think most production companies worry too much about deadlines and budgets than how good the quality of the finished project is. Besides, if you make an "ok" remake of an awesome film, people will most likely go see it  initially, which is that most of the companies are banking on to make their money back. :/

Yeah, just FYI all the sweet music you hear in Movie trailers are actually owned/composed/written by corporate companies that will only "lease" said songs to play in the theatrical trailers. So it's not going to be something you're going to find on iTunes. So unless one of like 10 people in the United States decides to lend you their music for free, then the chances of you getting your hands on the song is quite low. It's actually a pretty big business, contrary to what a lot of people think.

Too bad, really. I'm a huge fan of trailer music, but there is only so, so little of it actually available.

It's such a shame though. There must be only snippets of the full song in that trailer and I love that kind of music where it actually sends shivers down your spine with a single note. But unfortunately it's always in films and the song that you want is never in it's OST.

We can always hope though.

In any case I'll be sure to see it. I've never seen the original so I guess I can give a slightly less biased opinion although I am a fan of Keanu Reeves (since Bill and Teds excellent adventure of course) so I can't be that unbiased SMILEY.

Yep, it's definitely business first in the film industry.

Proof the studio suits are money grubbing scum with the artistic insight of a doorknob:  They're remaking My Fair Lady and Keira effing Knightley is attached to play Eliza.  Poor Professor Higgins, indeed.
