Tiberium is a new tactical first-person shooter video game title set in the Command & Conquer universe, currently under development at EA Los Angeles (EALA), the studio behind the Medal of Honor series and Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. The game features squad-based gameplay mechanics. It has been confirmed by a source with inside knowledge of EALA that the project is a "Renegade/Battlefield-style FPS". Tiberium was initially revealed when shots of the January 2008 issue of Game Informer was leaked, but was officially announced by EA just a day after. Prior to the announcement, the game had been in production for two years.

In the first previews of the game by GameSpot and IGN, it was confirmed Tiberium uses a game engine based on Unreal Engine 3.

On January 18, 2008, a trailer of Tiberium was released on GameTrailers with a message of more to come on January 25.

Eleven years after the Third Tiberium War, in 2058, a wasteland covers what was once the Mediterranean Sea. The player takes the role of Ricardo Vega (main character of the novel), a GDI field commander recently pulled out of retirement, who is exploring the single complete Scrin Threshold Tower called "Tower Omega" in this area. The tower is believed to be a relic from the Third Tiberium War but turns out to be the base of another Scrin invasion.

The most important feature of the game is that the player will control squads of units in multiplayer mode. Tiberium is the first game to feature the use of NPC squads in online play. The producer claimed that controlling the squads will be very easy and would automatically find cover by going behind a walker's legs or just using the natural terrain. Squads are deployed at the beginning of the level and more will be sent to replace those who have died. The known squads and units are rifleman squad, missile team, titan and the orca. The number of squads able to be commanded so far in the console version is 4, each one for the d-pad. The PC version will most likely have four, since the producers of the game don't want to the player to become bogged down with micromanagment.

Unlike most other first-person shooter video games, it has been revealed that the player will only carry one weapon which can be changed to do different things. In the Interview with the person in charge of this project, it has been shown that the gun can be changed to have anti air, anti infantry and anti tank capabilities. The weapon is called the GD-10. It has four modes. The Mag-Rail mode is a rail gun carbine and it is used for taking out infantry. The grenade launcher mod shoots out grenades. Best used for taking out large squads. The player can also take out the grenades and use them as regular grenades. The energy cannon is like a mini Ion Cannon and is used to blast things apart and is a sniper weapon. It overheats with use. The MLS (Multi-Launch System) is good for taking out air units. The player can target up to four enemies and the MLS will shoot a missile that splinters to take out each target. There will be no weapon Heads-up display. Instead, the player has a hologram on their weapon to count the ammo.

So here's the gist. EA (EALA is the studio that Westwood Studios was merged into) has FINALLY taken a stab at making an FPS make of Command and Conquer, after the relative "flop" of Renegade from Westwood Studios (I still play it). If "Renegade/Battlefield" is any indication, I fully expect this to be one rocking game. Oh, and I love the concept of being able to command NPCs in an online shooter. It's one of my dreams..

Oh, and the guy in the Trailer Smash the Ground Hacks.

Well, let's hope this CnC FPS doesn't suck.

This handy little thread has more details on the game.

Also, briefly browsing those forums, I found what appears to be a "civil" discussion regarding whether or not Nod will play any role in the game. As far as I can tell, the Single Player (not even interested in that at the moment) focuses on a GDI field commander facing off against Scrin. Multiplayer appears to be three-sided, but what I'm interested in is improvements on Renegades infantry class section, especially considering that the game only utilizes one weapon.

Edit: Here's a website with up-to-date news and information.

Edit: Found a cool article comparing CnC Renegade with newer, flashier games, what made Renegade good, what could use some tweaking, et cetera.

Part One - Campaign, Guns&Armor, and A.I.

Part Two - Stealth and Enviroment Interaction

Part Three - Multiplayer Pros and Cons

Passing on this game. This is Electronic freaking Arts we're talking about here, and Command & Conquer 3 just came off as average as C&C Generals. Also knowing from personal experiences with Battlefield 2 PC online, this means that EA's servers are STILL known to screw up from time to time regardless of PC specs.

This game has been canceled, for not meeting EA's "quality standards."

...

I'm going to go cut myself now.

Zippy!  How you been dude?

Anyways, was this the same C&C FPS that was in Game Informer?  If so, I hate EA even more now.  WHY WOULD YOU CANCEL THAT BEAUTY?!

Yeah, lame that it was cancelled.  But re: C&C3 being average:

Yes.  But that was more than made up for by Kane's Wrath.  The global conquest mode, plus the use of differing sub-factions allowing for complete tactic mix-ups, really did a lot to add depth.

*CENSORED* YOU EA, *BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE insert various insults here* EA.

Gah, I guess I'll have to keep playing Renegade.

Kane's Wrath really didn't warrant a $50.00 purchase with the campaign alone, and I really wasn't too crazy about the global conquest and the sub-factions.

I think it's for the best they cancelled it. Makes me wish Dawn Of War II and Red Alert 3 was here already.
