I'm watching Animatrix, and at the end of the second renaissance there is a kid playing by some ruins. But he's called home.
It looks like he's not in the matrix, but then as he gets closer to home and sees who's at the door, we see Agents. Then it looks like he gets thrown into a pod. What exactly happened there?

Did they use some sort of Agent robots to collect humans? Was that the matrix? Or was it symbolic?

Its symbolic. The boy was always inside the Matrix.

Just artistic effect - to show humanity's current state.

The boy playing in a war destroyed city is a symbol of the blissful state humanity is in. The Agents replacing his parents is a symbol for the Machine now being Humanity's care taker and the boys response to it shows what the truth would do to humans.

However because its only an artistic symbolism of the current state you can get any kind of meaning from it.

Strong symbolism. Everything about the Animatrix is just so well done.
