I remember it all as if it had just happened.
See... there is a pattern to the dream world we call the Matrix, the same way there is a pattern to everything in our lives; things seem random at times, but when you stop and think about it, you begin to wonder just how random the world really is. There are patterns everywhere if you look hard enough; you just have to pay attention and remember.
I started to recognize the pattern the day when dad changed. We were in Center Park that afternoon in March; we'd just come from lunch when a guy bumped into him as he ran down the street, yelling into one of those black cell phones that slide open when you use them. In the moment I turned to see where the man had run off too, dad started to convulse violently, and his voice cracked and got deeper. When I turned around, dad wasn't dad anymore; he was someone else: different face, receding hairline, sunglasses, suit...someone else completely.
Without flinching, he ran after the guy that flew by earlier. I tried to catch up, but it was like chasing an Olympic sprinter. All I could do was stand there as he disappeared into the crowd of commuters that wandered up the street. I called the police and they said told me not to make prank calls, or that they'd look into it, but no real answers. They didn't believe me. I didn't really believe it myself at first. It didn't make sense, but I know what I saw, and what I saw didn't add up. I knew that whatever was going on, it wasn't going to stop anytime soon, but I had no idea what I was in for...
