The year is 1720 and the New World is on fire.

England, France, and Spain have unleashed their forces on the Caribbean. Naval officers captain massive warships through bloody engagements at sea. Freetraders charge through blockades and smuggle the war material needed to conquer the enemy's ports. Privateers raid enemy shipping, looting ships of their treasure and rival nations of their glory.

Through it all sail the Pirates. Bloody, bold, and resolute, they serve no flag and heed no king. They live free, fight hard, and obey only fate.

In Pirates of the Burning Sea you choose your destiny!

Blistering Naval Combat - Maneuver your ship in real time, turning one way to unleash a broadside and then cutting back to guard your damaged armor.

Savage Swashbuckling - Our swashbuckling system is something you've never seen in an MMO before.

PvP-Conquerable World - The Caribbean of 1720 is home to many dozens of ports belonging to the three great powers: Britain, France, and Spain. Each port is a valuable source of goods, equipment, and mission patrons.

Sophisticated Missions - Our mission system gives you a starring role in your own epic. Each player accumulates a personal supporting cast of NPCs, including old enemies, new friends, lost loves, and treacherous allies.

Dramatic Avatars - You don't have to look like everyone else. Our avatars are built with sixteen customizable slots. Choose hair, faces, footwear, hands, coats, hats, belts, jewelry, and much more.

Action For Every Play Style - Whether your interest is in ship combat, piracy, commercial trading, or adventure, you have a role to play, and all your adventures take place in a dramatic world of conflict and change.

Its friggin awesome, Im loving it. I got myself a beg leg the other day because I got it severly damaged in a boarding combat, where an insane captain set the gunpowder alight.

All retail boxes come with a buddy key, so I do have one spare.

Il see if I can get some more.
#36300391440 01/22/2008 12:51:51 Re:Pirates of the Burning Sea Subscription Information

lol Yes I noticed Havocide trolling the forums over there a bit SMILEY

Just kidding, he wasn't trolling... more like lurking.

I have found the game enjoyable myself, I am a sucker for blowing up wooden ships.

Plus I make a ridiculous amount of money (imo) in the economy.

Nope. Trolling. SMILEY

I keep to the shadows, myself. Unlike this forum. It's so hard to manage more than one MMO forum at once. Especially without image sigs. SMILEY

The Beta was horrible. Did they make it better at all, avatar wise? Ship combat also got reeeeaaaallllyyyyy repetitive.

Theres not a trial that weve heard of so far, unless they have activated the station launcher trial.

Ive not quite taken over the seas just yet. Thats the next plan!
#36300392182 01/23/2008 14:48:26 Re:Pirates of the Burning Sea Subscription Information
Nope, no trial in launcher yet.
#36300392231 01/23/2008 15:44:44 Re:Pirates of the Burning Sea Subscription Information
Nice to see MxO on that box. SMILEY

I checked for the trial earlier too. I'm guessing they might wait a bit to get it up so they can make sure they fix any new problems in-game before having people try it out.
#36300392242 01/23/2008 16:02:55 Re:Pirates of the Burning Sea Subscription Information
In all fairness Ive had no major issues with the game, which I know is client based as everyones specs work different.
The only issue I have which isnt that bad anymore is 'rubberbanding' in ports. Its only minor other than that theres no major bugs ive noticed.

I think this game has corrupted my brain. SMILEY

Darn fun though.

No 'Cannon ball' time sequences though... or shades...

Oh well at least I got my personal Sail and flag...

#36300395586 01/29/2008 09:50:33 Re:Pirates of the Burning Sea Subscription Information

I did the beta, thanks to Tseng, and I thought it was pretty fun but not worth the monthly fee.   Its kind of hard to tell the NPC ships from normal players while you are in the open sea but I bet that over time you can instantly tell.  It takes a long time to catch up to another ship and it sucks when you almost catch them and then they port at an island...  I wish you could change your outfit on the fly though instead of having to go to the seamstress that is only on a few islands and that if you forget the name of it takes forever to find it again... >_<

Overall, the concept is great and it is probably one of the best Pirate games out there.  If I ever find myself with more time on my hands I might get a full station pass and play.

Tip: When selecting a name, the last name is what matters most.  If you name yourself Captain Jack Sparrow, you will be called Captain Sparrow throughout the game and I know you won't want that!  Who the heck is Captain Sparrow??  I think one of my names was Hydra Hydrazine SMILEY

#36300397031 01/31/2008 08:56:27 Re:Pirates of the Burning Sea Subscription Information

for the people playing it , is there any land pve or land fighting ? or is it all ship combat ?

#36300397037 01/31/2008 09:01:33 Re:Pirates of the Burning Sea Subscription Information

It has both, Avatar combat (land) isnt as polished as ship combat due to being added very late in the development cycle.

Avatars were only added due to community outcry.

I'm interested in the game, but not entirely convinced.  What are, in the opinions of those who play it, the best and worst aspects of the game?

Stengths

  • Ship combat
  • Crafting
  • Ship/Avatar appearance customization is good
  • Auction House functionality appears solid
  • Community Service seems good (the couple of times I have needed it they GMs were prompt)

Weaknesses

  • Avatar combat
  • Economy is a little shakey but still early as there are few to no 50s on the servers
  • Mission incompleteness (I have been finding about 15% of the missions have missing or place holder text)
  • Some server/database instability (though its getting better, you can play but things can go arwy if the server crashes or has to be restarted)
  • Roll back functionality doesn't appear 100% working correct (On blackbeard the weekend before last I got hit with a nasty bug resulting from a small 2 hour roll back)
  • Chat interface needs polish

All my opinions of coarse.

While it is true the economy is kinda shakey, I believe in the long run, the economy is what will keep people, like me, playing.  Similar to EVE's economy, the economy in POTBS is completely player driven.

I've been playing the game off and on since beta, and have been thoroughly enjoying the game lately.  Maybe it's just because I haven't played a good pirate game in a long time.  And Aether's there!
