I came across this in a UK paper today called The Sun and it was a letter to the agony aunt about a problem. Im guessing the game in question is probably going to be World of Warcraft or maybe Second Life but after reading the letter it makes you think that some people do become so involved in the fantasy worlds of mmos and that it is quite worrying the affect it can have on people's real lives.
The letter
Dear Deidre, My husband has a virtual life in an online game which includes sex and marriage. Now he says he loves his online wife and can't live without her. I'm 28, he is 29 and our kids are seven and five. He hardly sees them - he plays this game day and night, having found it a few months ago. It didn't bother me until he began hiding the screen and closing down windows when i entered the room. He's now got in tow with a female. He syas he loves her and can't carry on if she partners somebody else. We had a huge row and he has now married her online and they are about to adopt kids. The amount of real money he's spending on her is starting to get to me. I can't remember the last time he bought me or the kids anything nice. I've said i'll walk away from this marriage if he dosen't grow up but he thinks it's a joke. Am i being a bit over the top?
Discuss?

It's not real. Deidre's 'letters' are fabricated.
It's real somewhere, though. Germany, perhaps.

It makes you wonder what the husband does for a living...

Stuff like that does happen. I know two people who dropped out of school to play EverQuest. It's really rather frightening. They threw away something really important for a game that may not be around forever.

So what was Deidre's answer?

On a serious note, is falling in love and making friends online any different? Sure the wording is different, but the concept is still the same. Minds link.

RP/cyber..(whatever) can be fun if you have nothing to feel guilty over...

Making friends and/or love online is entirely possible I believe, people have had long and successful marriges after meeting online and its not always planned.
But the fact he has a family changes everything, he should devote a lot more of his time with his family and stop playing if he can get that obsessed over someone.
Also, I dont think it is WoW, as the letter says lots of money goes into it, it seems more like Second Life, buying lots of items and land for them to use and as gifts and such...
