Look forward to it, ya no Simulacra and Simulation readin' mofo.

Indeed, as will I.

I think one of the most fascinating things about this book is that you can find a little of all the orgs' perspectives and philosophies as Ex and I have talked about at a ridiculous time of the morning(for me at least), this morning.

I think it will give you a unique perspective on what's going on now in the story, as well as what's possible as we move forward.

I almost felt guilty, as I'm sure at one point you forgot you were in the middle of a conversation and dozed off SMILEY.  Either that or my skills as a conversationalist are as honed as my abilities in the field of nuclear physics. SMILEY.

S & S - read, and converse.

I tried reading S&S in english, pretty difficult for me to understand, might have to get a german version too.

Anyways, I'm -still- reading the Rama series. I keep stopping in the middle of things >_<

Oh not at all. My pauses were solely PvP-fuelled. SMILEY

Yeah, I forgot if there was a really good German version. I'm pretty sure there is though. Just can't recall the author.

I feel so inadequate in this thread.  I just read a book about a boy in a boat with a tiger (although, in the end, it was much much more than just that) while you guys are reading Simulacra and Simulation and Nietzsche.

At least I knew who Nietzsche was without having to Google him.  That counts for something, right?

But I did have to google how to spell inadequate.

You shouldn't feel inadequate.  I love to read, but I love to read what I love. The books I posted really have no similarities to what most have posted but they can still be stimulating.

Anyway,

I just finished reading 24 Declassified: Choas Theory & Darkly Dreaming Dexter and I just started reading 24 Declassified: Storm Force.  I have a man-crush on Jack Bauer. SMILEY

Finally bought Simulation and Simulacra last week and started reading it... Not good to read it though if you're half asleep >.<  It's interesting to begin with nonetheless.

(Relevant necro, so release that locking trigger.)

Nothing like getting all stocked up and shiny, once again:

I'm continually amazed by how relevant, and almost prophetic '1984' is.

Just one example:

'In a way, the world-view of the Party imposed itself most successfully on people incapable of understanding it.  They could be made to accept the most flagrant violations of reality, because they never fully grasped the enormity of what was demanded of them, and were not sufficiently interested in public events to notice what was happening...They simply swallowed everything...'

Stunning.

I'm totally reading that same version of 1984 right now!
I did find a typo though...Page 197, Line 3, Word 7.  Tsk tsk.

More coincidence, I was but two pages away from that particular page.  Regarding the typo, you're quite right.

I would personally recommend George Orwell's "1984" and Plato's "Republic" and draw comparisons to our modern day society. Quite scary.

#36300560905 05/31/2009 15:03:51 Re:The Written Word

If you liked 1984 you'll probably like Brave New World.

#36300560911 05/31/2009 15:15:14 Re:The Written Word

Just finished 'History of Rasselas: Prince of Abbysinia' for revision. Quite good, interesting critique on society. Even if it's dated.

Now that I'm done with Uni for the year, I'm hoping to finish reading Pat Barker's 'Regeneration' Trilogy, and the revisit some of the classics, like Orwell. Try to get around to reading Simulacra and Simulation.

Excellent choice.  I found it to be one of Gibson's best novels since his earlier Cyberpunk work.  It just gelled as both a story and a concept better than some of his later cyberpunk books.  I've got Pattern Recognition's sort of sequel Spook Country on tap for when I find time to read.

I adore 1984, but never could get into Brave New World.  I still haven't finished it.

In other news - new Chuck Palahniuk in three days.  Much fervoured anticipation.

#36300562905 06/03/2009 16:10:23 Re:The Written Word

I enjoyed both 1984 and Brave New World. The former I read in high school whereas the latter I ended up watching as a TV movie first. I believe it aired on the Sci Fi channel one bored weekend while I had nothing to do.

It was my belief that the movie actually ruined the book for me but perhaps I simply had the same problem as exsuscito.

Has anyone tried Little Brother by Cory Doctorow?
