NightTrace is actually Rarebit which thus causes rift in time and space. But let's go back to the beginning.

After being stuck in a Zion recovery construct, where he boned a digital recording of Ookami everyday, he was released with a clean bill of health. He grew a goatee and started calling himself The Generalista. The rest, as you well know, is history.
