Hey you lot, I just thought I'd bring this up here whilst I remembered. The Joshua Foundation is a charity fund for children with terminal cancer - The Oz Experience is an extension of that. Basically, you raise £2500 (or more) and half of that money goes to the charity and half pays for your trip to Australia where you do conservation work and visit children with Terminal Cancer for, I think, 2 weeks. I first heard about this when we were given a speech by a woman called Sarah Cornelius at my school who talked about a boy called Joshua who had a pretty good life going for him, until he got terminal cancer. She then revealed a little later in the presentation that she was actually Joshua's mother, and I have to tell you it hits you hard when you hear something like that. A woman who has had to deal with that and yet still is such a strong character is so inspiring. Out of a group of I think 100 students, who were present at this presentation, only two people decided to partake in the fund raising of this charity; myself and my friend Tim and we've decided to work together to raise the money as a team which would essentially be £5000. Here is something from the website:
The Joshua Foundation (TJF) was created in September 1998 to provide holidays and experiences for children and their families where the child is diagnosed with terminal cancer. The Joshua Foundation was launched on September 27th 1998 with a 5 kilometre fun/walk that raised £16,000, and on January 17th 1999, a huge party at Planet Hollywood, London, saw the first gathering of children and the beginning of "TJF Experiences". Whereas other wish organisations provide one-off experiences, the Joshua Foundation effectively 'adopts' children and their families providing them with on-going experiences and memories.
If you wish to read about Sarah's story then you can read about it here. I warn you, it's a little bit heart-wrenching though.
I'm posting here now because of a fund-raising event I'm doing on this Sunday in the UK. This Sunday (the 26th) Myself and Tim who I mentioned earlier, will be doing a bucket collection at the Leicester Forest East Motor Way Service Station - Southbound. Both myself and Tim will be there from 8am-Midnight, doing collections; yes it's going to be a long day/night but we know it's going to raise money and that's why we're doing it. I bring this to your attention so if you live near there or drive by there on your way to work or whatever perhaps you could give a little something. Even if it's just keeping me entertained for 5 minutes while I stand there ![]()
I hope you at least take the time to read about The Joshua Foundation because I believe it's a truly amazing charity. I'll list website links here, although if you want more information you can just ask ![]()
