It's been eight years since The Matrix was first released into theaters. It was new, exciting, and fresh... Was...
Most people use Matrix in jokes/punchlines these days, as the glamour has worn off with the majority of people. Gamers, fickle people, often move on once they realize there's no more content to be had aside from live events. Gamers, typically younger folks and college students, don't justify their fifteen bucks as well spent when they can only interact with a few people at a time. Our population has diminished so much that it's not a friendly place for someone who is new to the game... It's ghost-town, much as Anarchy Online or Ultima Online... And AO is free; UO has a lower subscription fee.
The person who stated that we're at our core playerbase is absolutely correct in that statement. There's some people that play off and on, but for the most part those who make contributions to the forums are the ones who have stuck it out and remained. But even they wear thin and eventually run out of optimism. It's been stated all across this thread...
This game's been dying for the year and half I've played. I've acquired five players in my time playing this and they've all left within the first month. The person who brought me in has left. You either love this game because you're a hardcore fan and enjoy the release from all the medieval-fantasy MMO's or you're like everyone else in the world -- content to be one of the faceless millions running about Azeroth. WoW is huge and even though I don't like it, I feel that's because I'm concerned about substance.
We're all concerned about substance.
Substance won't remain if SOE does not actively promote this game, though. Because more and more of the core playerbase are becoming fed up, finding it a challenge to jack-in... It's only a matter of time before those core players make the decision to cancel their sub, as there's no longer a point... They'll go and then eventually return, but what will they be returning to? Instead of 100 players, they'll return to 80. They'll resign, then return again a month later to 40... And so on and so on...
Until it's just five of us and a car commercial on a billboard paying for this.
