Ok, so I've read that we may be in the 4th version of the Matrix at the moment, that the current version of the Matrix does not require the One (which we don't have one of anyway) to reboot the Matrix, and that the oracle wasn't brought into the picture until the third version (in which the One first appears). Given that, I have 3 simple questions:
1) Who is currently capable of rebooting the Matrix?
2) If when the Oracle was created the One was created as a remainder, then what is different now that there is no remainder (the Matrix was rebooted at the end of Revolutions, no?)? Smith shouldn't necessarily account for the One's opposite in the equation initially because he was simply an Agent before Neo pwned him in the hallway, then he changed.
3) Has anybody seen the Twins? Anybody at all?

We're actually in the 7th version. There were 5 Ones before Neo. So we see the 6th version in the movies. At the end of Revolutions we clearly see the dejavu of the black cat again, with the entire block rebuilding itself which is a good sign of a reboot.
To answer your questions: 1: Only the Machines can reboot the Matrix. 2: No idea what you're really asking. But Smith is Neo's opposite in everything they do after they both 'died', not before that. 3: Twins are in game. Not much, but they have been at a few events. There are a couple of critical missions, that you can get at your local Merv Archivist (Apollyon NW) that will tell you how they came back.

I think we're now in the third *version*.
The first two failed, then the Oracle joined in with her choice system, which caused the Anomaly and thus the Ones. Neo was tge 6th one, thus the Matrix from the movies the sixth *instance*, and we might be in the 7th one. I doubt if you can call them versions, as they don't seem to be new designs - just restarts, reboots. We know the bluepills know about happenings in the movies to a degree, so the history continues through these reboots.
I'm not sure if anyone "reboots" the Matrix currently. They probably do cleanups, like after infections through terrorists or other enemies, but I haven't heard about real reboots.
The Twins were recollected from the stratosphere in chapter 6.1., and now appear in missions and live events as characters.
PS: And seriously, don't worry about your post length - you could have come up with a post 10 times as long, and wouldn't have to apologize. =p

What's the difference between instance and version? The program One checks for flawes in the system and corrects/reports those appropriatly. When the path of the One ends, Zion will be destroyed and reformed with 27 humans (or 29? 26?). That's quite a reboot, isn't it? This all happened in the first two Matrixes (sp?) too. The Oracle didn't make the One, she only guides the One on his path. The One of the 6th version was shown love (Trinity), something that the Oracle didn't try with the previous 5 Ones. Well, that's how I understand it anyway. I always saw the One as a virusscanner and the Matrix as a computer. The owner of the computer ran the virusscanner (and found Smith) and usually we all end up formatting our pc's

I approach this thinking of the Matrix as an OS. You're running XP. A virus is cleaned up or whatever the case may be that the system needs to be rebooted, and you do so. The system is cleaned out and starts fresh. This doesn't mean the way the OS runs was changed at all or updated. You're not running Vista, you're still in the same version. So (in my eyes), the Architect build the first two versions of the Matrix, which we know both failed. Then in the third version came the Oracle, (indirectly) creating the One (via remainder, blah blah) and ran through 5 of them , all of which returned to the source to reboot the Matrix. Once the 6th One came (Neo), the Oracle threw love into the mix, thus Neo did not return to the source. He took care of the Smith virus, and the Matrix rebooted after that incident. But this doesn't mean it was reprogrammed, so it's still the same version. This is what makes sense to me, even though I somewhat confuse myself.

I actually think we're in the fourth version of the matrix. The first was the Paradise version, the second was the Hell version. The Third was the one based on the cycle of the One (of which there were six instances). Since the function of the One (to maintain balance in the Matrix and Zion) is no longer an issue and those that want free can be freed, the rules of the third version no longer apply.
So, from my perspective
Version 1: Paradise-Failed
Version 2: Hell-Failed
Version 3.1-.6: The One-Obsolete due to the cycle being broken
Version 4: The Truce

I'm not sure if this version doesn't have a One... I'd say, it's pretty suggesting to assume otherwise. And please keep in mind, for the bluepills, life continues after the previous "version" ended. Probably unlike the first two versions.
Anyway, if we don't distinguish, we're now in the 9th version.

We have no One, we need no One, we shouldn't want another One. The rules are totally different now.
