#36300173988 02/24/2007 17:34:08 What would it take to revive Mxo?

I recently began playing Mxo about a week ago. Picked it up after ditching vanguard(mabye in time vangaurd will shine), and I am loving Mxo. I love the customizable looks, the cyber-underground streetlife vibe that Mxo has, and the skill trees, omg the skill trees are awsome! Ive never seen a game that gives the players so much room for customization. And the gameplay so far is very fun. I kinda like the way missions are handled via cellphone. Its unique and it really immerses you as a key player in the Matrix. Combat is very compelling and interactive, and via the varying skill trees, combat can be takled hundreds of different ways. And by endgame you can jump over buildings, practicly flying? lol, this games definatly has a "cool factor".
(I will complain about fps inside buildings though. I am currently running an AMDX2 4600, with nvidiaGeforce 8800 GTS, and 1Gig of Ram. And I still only get about 10fps inside buildings. Vangaurd wasnt even that bad  SMILEY)

All in all, I love the game. But my concern is this: As great of a game as Mxo seems to be, It seems to be dieing. I rarely see other people. And most of the Redpills I do see are lvl 50 already. Im starting to wonder who Im going to group with as things get harder(Im lvl 10 atm). I really wish that more people would play this game.

What would it take? What would have to happen for Mxo to be revived? I personally would like to see an expansion pack. other players have told me that there is virtualy no endgame content in Mxo. There is the problem! no wonder hardly anyone plays anymore. And expasion pack would be the perfect thing to fix that. Add some endgame features, new lvls, new looks, new places. Mabye they could touch the graphics up a bit, they are already decent, but some DX 9 texture and lighting features would be nice.

What about marketing? Im sure with a little marketing/advertising people would be reminded that Mxo is still around, and that its worth a second look.

What else could be done? Will we ever see the day that SOE performes cpr on Mxo?

Wow. My join date is rather... messed up.

Talk about a chuckle. I haven't been around in about a year and I return to pretty much no one I know around anymore. Not surprising I guess.

What would it take to get MXO back on track? I enjoyed it back when we had our first few live events (The red-sunglassed agents and the hunt for Neo's RSI bits), but I remember as soon as SOE was rumored to be taking over, people started dropping.

Community has always been something that drove the game, imo. Maybe just getting more people into it. THe roleplaying, etc.

Bah. It's too early to think about this.

#36300195943 03/24/2007 21:23:29 Re:What would it take to revive Mxo?
Dude, this question has been asked for as long as I can remember, and I've been here since the beginning.

The thing is, like straticfire pointed out, when SOE took over, a lot of things changed. For one, back with Monolith, MxO had an expansive live event team. You didn't have these small affairs like we do today, nor did we have just one person doing all the live events. SOE fired half the development team so off the bat, there went the opportunity for expansion packs or an endless supply of endgame comment (a la WoW). The reason why we don't have much endgame is because Monolith decided to focus more time and money on the live events instead of perma-content, and while that was enough to keep people like me around, the live events only lasted two months and so the game failed to draw any new players. Heck, the game was struggling to hold on to even 20,000 or so players in the first trial month (main reason people left back then was because of the lag-tastic events; while they were good, they were too epic) and since then has been steadily declining (think we're somewhere below 10,000 players).

The truth is man, SOE never had any intention of carrying MxO, they only got it as a package deal off of WB, and anyone who tells you different is lieing. To the devs' credit though, they've been trying their damnedest to get new content out there (pandora's box, MxO's only attempt at a quest, was added a year and half ago; they added the white hallway constructs for each organization; and gave a new drop in 01), but the problem is, it comes out at such a slow pace that by the time new content does come out the people that would have stayed for it are already gone. One thing I forgot to mention, CR2, took more than six months to go through testing and to be released on live servers. Just a small indication.

So yeah man, unless more devs are hired, don't expect a whole lot of content to be released in the near future; hell, the game'll probably be shut down by that time. The devs' priority is the story and bugs (the game, as you've already found out, is buggy as all hell), and content comes later. It's a shame with what happened to this game, and all that gets people interested is an exciting plotline (I already know of more than 20 people coming back to check out the Smith virus event). And pretty soon, that's all that I'll be coming back for as well. World of Warcraft is looking more and more interesting the more I look into it and hear about it.

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty to keep you going for a year or so, like contact missions, the archives, constructs, the occassional event, hideouts, pvp, (I'm actually back from a four month hiatus, and that's been keeping me going) but like so many, the lack of content begins to wear on you (and it probably will on me, which is why I'm looking into WoW).

Other than that, what server are you on? If you're on Vector, then yeah, there aren't a lot of people there (don't know why, I love pvp), but the other two servers have pretty healthy populations. If you are on Recursion though, look me up ingame and I'll show you around the city.

I think MxO has always had great potential, but bad marketing and poor support (from its owners).  As it is with any group, it can't succeed if the leader isn't enthusiastic about it.  SOE isn't trying to push it so it's not likely to really soar, unfortunately.
#36300198086 03/27/2007 00:31:28 Re:What would it take to revive Mxo?
Oh, and I think WoW is highly overrated.  I've tried playing it on several occasions and I get bored very quickly every time.
#36300198384 03/27/2007 07:42:39 Re:What would it take to revive Mxo?
A lot.

As an owner and CEO of IT Services Company (IBM Business Partner), I see several flaws in SOE's approach. I have played this game since its inception (invited to beta but didnt have the time) and I have been stunned by the lack of marketing. It is truly one of the best games I have ever played (don't worry other IT execs play online games also(at home)). Another thing that stuck in my craw is the absolute lack of infrastructure integrity. Whereas, I don't doubt the IT architecture of MxO in it stability I find that they have strayed away from maintaining the story integrity.

I think the game would have a lot more playership if the game kept to the principles of the Matrix trilogy. The Matrix is a truly hostile place to be. This appeals to players at large as a challenge. The non-hostile environments totally stray away from that concept and leads to the perception of lack of content. I, myself, have always played in the hostile world where there is NEVER a dull moment.

That said, I could argue the point that Sony is watching and waiting for a chance to position Matrix Online in the gaming market. One extension could be thru its platform, Playstation in which its gaming platform becomes so mature that it can jack into an MMO like this. This in turn could move gaming to the next level in terms of scalability and revolutionize the gaming industry as we know it. Imaging both Console and PC gamers in one environment interacting. MxO could be that flagship if SOE was smart.

MxO is a franchise. Its dynamics are unique, its design clever, its style uber (in gamespeak), and its game play slick (CR2 made things a lot easier and PvP encounters quick). This game still has a lot to grow (its two years old, still in childhood) with its compelling story. Whether or not SOE decides to captialize on its strengths while working on its weaknesses is a matter for the SOE execs to decide. If I was them, I would divert funds towards expanding this game in innovative ways.

And yes, more marketing is to be called for. The real question is, will those Executives step up to the plate and think outside the box?

Only time will tell.

The game is a POS.  Everytime they update, they break something, so of course, with limited resources the game will never be updated like others.  Combine this with no one there to fix the game (for instance, coder which is getting worse and worse) because no one knows how to fix it.  And, you have a very dead game.  How to revive it?  Fix it.

Content and fixes, and work on an expansion.

More Devs, and more money, and end game content!

Here is what would revive MxO....

A Millionaire/Billionaire who buys the rights for The Matrix Online from Sony.  Then he will get rid of this whole game and make a new one that FEELS LIKE THE MATRIX!  I hope this will happen in the future, that a new Matrix game will come out that will actually feel like you are playing in the Matrix.  This game doesn't even come close to what the movies are.  Path of Neo was the closest game that came close to a Matrixy feel.

these new players you speak of are more than likely alts or people who play this game strictly b/c of station access. the only people left who play this game are hardcore Matrix fans (which I am), so essentially MxO has become a niche game.

As I said before in this thread, the only way this game can be revived (attracting new players) is more content, i.e. expansions and the like. Heck, scrapping this game and completely remaking a new one on a good engine with a decent combat system and content is more likely to get a sufficient player base. And personally, I hope for that to happen.

Yea, but I don't think Warner Brothers or the Wachowski Brothers are going to let anyone make MxO 2.0.  Mainly because of the poor performance of this MxO.  They'll have to basically be promised that MxO 2.0 would make more profit than this game currently is making.

Well, they sure as hell know what not to do the second time around, right? lol But yeah, I agree, I don't think they'll risk anymore $$$, especially on a hit/miss scheme that this franchise seems to be.
#36300417004 02/29/2008 11:59 Re:What would it take to revive Mxo?

As a brand new player of MxO, but an ancient MMO'er (I started with UO back in 199SMILEY I would have to say that there are three main things that could help revive MxO.

For starters, the learning curve in MxO is atrocious. I've played alot of games and there were several aspects of the game that just didn't make alot of sense to me, or that I didn't understand until I went trolling in the forums for guides. You're average gamer isn't going to do that and fans of the Matrix who've never gamed before probably won't either. They'll see something they don't understand and write the game off in the free month. I'd recommend expanding the tutorial a bit and helping the player along for a few more levels. (The game is on an old Evercrack treadmill design as well, so it seems to take ridiculous amounts of time to get to level 50, no suprise that it ended up in SOE's lap, but I digress)

Secondly, this game will never be huge, not by UO or Everquest and certainly not by WoW standards. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean it can't be successful. I have been exceedingly impressed by the amount of RP going on in MxO, of all the games I've been a part of over the last decade, the only one to top what I've seen thus far in MxO is UO. They should try to take advantage of that. For relatively cheap, they could webvertise in alot of places where fans of the Matrix like to troll, but since most of them have already played, they're going to need a gimmick... on to that.

The game needs a code push. Since they are working with devs who didn't design the engine and there appear to be limitations to what they can and can't do in a timely fashion, they need to find a solution to this problem. Whether it be port the game over to another engine (time consuming, anyone?) or hire on some new help temporarily and make a major overhaul to the game (expensive), they need to come up with some persistant, long term goals for players at the end game and be looking into expanding levels/abilities of players. I would personally like to see combat changed as well. Interlock provides some very cool visuals, but the "awe" of those last about 5 minutes after you've seen them. I would say, throw IL out the window and come up with a system for engaging multiple targets in Melee combat simoultaneously (much more Matrix-esque) and allowing the use of other fighting styles against multiple targets. (Shotgun spreads, covering fire from rifles, etc)...

Once they've got their gimmick, they hit the ex-players and Matrix fans who may have never played with a net only ad campaign, maybe even hit some general MMO sites to try and draw people in while at the same time holding onto the people they aleady have with this same new content.

#36300417623 03/01/2008 11:51 Re:What would it take to revive Mxo?
well with this current poll were having maybe will get some  attention out of it im sure sony didnt even Think we would be second to swg right now and maybe this will show them people actaully play the game who knows /shrugs
#36300417968 03/02/2008 00:10 Re:What would it take to revive Mxo?

I've looked at quite a few vids from The Agency, and it certainly isn't Mxo 2... It is Planetside 2.

As for SWG fans, they could give a *poop* less about this game, don't expect any help from them. (Besides, we all know KOTOR:Online is in the works, which will deliver the death blow to SWG.)

Its a mixed bag of feelings from me on SOE's stance on MxO. On the one hand, I can't believe they wouldn't want to invest more into the game given its ravenous success at the box office, on the other, I can totally see them just riding it out for whatever they can make off of it because, afterall, it IS SOE... They are the Osama of MMO gaming. (Lets make every game we own in the exact same fashion as our first title and see how much money we can make, screw revolutionizing the industry, give us that fat dollar...)

Incase it isn't obvious, I'm not a fan of SOE.

#36300443020 04/16/2008 08:42:46 Re:What would it take to revive Mxo?

The thing that set this game apart from all the rest originally was the chance to really interact with the characters we've all come to know and love in a completely non-scripted manner. Not what we have today...but real interaction. That being said, I'd say the one key building block to reviving MxO is...

Bringing back a Live Events Team.

#36300457994 05/22/2008 02:10:53 Re:What would it take to revive Mxo?

Yeah there needs to be something to do that doesnt involve a mad grind / farm.  So much of what happens in mxo is recycled.  I get that we dont have LET or DEV staff to seriously work on new content.  Ultimately what would "revive" (which i think is the wrong word cause mxo certainly isnt dead.. its just.. limp ha) MXO?

A bigger budget.  How do we get a bigger budget?  Larger player base.  How do we get a larger player base?  We need to market the game....

so there we go.. through logic we see ultimately MXO needs to be marketed more appropriately before we can get anywhere else.  However you could argue that this alone will not bring new players to the game.  New players (like old players) need something to stir the imagination to get away from that oh so bad grind to 50... so you could argue that LET would help bring players.

I could go round in circles all day here.

#36300458175 05/22/2008 09:23:39 Re:What would it take to revive Mxo?

Yes, MXO events was what made this game so special. I talk about real big events like the assassin thing not our current "little events".

I honestly think SOE has enough money to do something with MXO. It's just they don't want to.

Everquest is much older than MXO and they seem to be "hooked" on it, adding new content very often a friend told me. Without a first step from SOE , The Matrix Online will never evolve and will stay only an "addition" to the station pass.

Welcome to the desert of real...

A full time PAID LET and animators..... but you are talking about a $2 - 5M USD budget......

A bigger team, period. But I cannot admire the current team enough for their efforts.
